Notes

add »
Carla is the person questioned by Detective Marjorino on this episode. She is the first of the five living friends to give her statement to the police. (edit)
Carla goes to London with Samantha instead of staying in Bedford with her father because she doesn't want to be left behind. (edit)
This is the first time Jenna and Aaron hook up. (1986) (edit)
Madonna's hit song "Papa Don't Preach" is the song playing on the radio at Craig's place when Jenna starts dancing. (edit)
Reunion debuted at a
*5.1/ 8 in the overnights (#3)
*6.64 million viewers (#3)
*3.0/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3) at 9 p.m.
Also of note, the retention from The O.C. viewers was solid at 90% in total viewers, and 91% among adults 18-49. There was very little audience drop-off in the second half-hour. (edit)

Quotes

Det. Marjorino: What can you tell me about 1987?
Carla: Let's just say that 1987 started off with a bang. (edit)
Carla: Jenna found out that "I Love You" can be said after sex but maybe she wasn't quite ready to hear it yet. (edit)
Aaron: (In the diner, with Carla and Jenna) Trust me, Wham is gonna be the next Beatles! Come on... wake me up before you go-go? That's brilliant! (edit)
Friend/Eulogizer: There were six of them. That's what I remember. Separatley not unlike you or me, but together like no group I'd ever known. But that was 1986 when I never would've thought that one of those six friends might be brutally murdered, in their prine, by an unknown assailant. Now 20 years later, one thing remains unchanged, that the departed didn't provide us with one like worth watching, but six lives that were so close, now I can't talk about one without talking about another. (edit)
Carla: I don't expect it to be always nice out in the world, but here, us, together, that shouldn't change. It can't change! (edit)

Trivia

add »
In the present day, when detective Marjorino calls Carla at the funeral, he calls her "Mrs. Holland." Back in 1986, however, she has another last name. Therefore, we can tell she got married along the way. (edit)
At the party on Craig's house, he gives Samantha a ring and she takes it but it is not clear is that was an engagement ring or not. (edit)
The Eulogizer talks about how 1986 was years before he really got to know them, but in all the episodes shown we don't ever see him again. Would he have come back later on? Was he not included in the highlights of the years? Or was it just a blooper? (edit)
One look at the car and you will notice that the accident happened on the passenger side. The cop should have easily been able to tell that Will was the one sitting on the passenger side, since he was the one most injured. Craig barely sustained any injuries whatsoever. (edit)
The producers did a good job of getting the music right for 1986 with one major exception. "Papa Don't Preach" was indeed a hit that year as was Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years." A-Ha's famous rotoscope video for "Take On Me" was a 1985 hit, but was popular enough to still be seen on MTV that year. The big mistake was one of the characters talking about Wham being the new Beatles. Wham's fifteen minutes were already up in 1986, as "Wake Me Up before you Go Go" was big in the fall of 1984, while "Careless Whisper" was a 1985 hit. Wham was already way forgotten by summer of '86 as Michael was at work with his solo "Faith" album for 1987. (edit)

Allusions

add »
American Dreams: Will Estes' character, Will, is an awful lot like the last character, JJ, he played in "American Dreams." They both come from not very wealthy families, and get athletic scholarships. They both have a rich friend (Beth vs. Craig) and go into the army. (edit)
Haley's Comet: Sam and Will discuss Craig's love of Haley's Comet, which is perhaps the best known comet in the world. It is visible to us without aid of a telescope every 76 years, and was last near Earth in 1986. Haley's Comet will be back in 2061. (edit)
St. Elmo's Fire: Aaron makes a comment about St. Elmo’s Fire, which was a 1985 "Brat Pack" movie about friends hanging out together after college. (edit)
Andrew Ridgley (Wham!)/John Lennon (The Beatles): Aaron predicts that Andrew Ridgley is the next John Lennon. Andrew Ridgley was the lesser known half of Wham!, who faded from the public eye once George Michael went solo. The Beatles are hailed as one of the greatest bands of all time. Many bands have been said to "be the next Beatles" but thus far, none have achieved such a status. (edit)
Risky Business: Craig says Porsche’s famous catchphrase, “Accept No Substitute” while demonstrating the speeding ability of his car. The phrase took off once Tom Cruise said it in the film Risky Business. Also of note regarding Tom Cruise, Will calls Craig "Mr. Cruise" right before they get in the accident. Sean Faris (who plays Craig) has been compared to Tom Cruise since he was 12. (edit)
