Richard Bacon: Summary

Recent Role:
Himself on FM (UK)
Gender:
Male
Birthday:
11-30-1975
Birthplace:
Mansfield, Nottighamshire
He began his media career making tea at BBC Radio Nottingham and went on to spend three years at the station working as a News Reporter. During this time he fondly recalls interviewing Nicole Kidman and reporting on sunburnt pigs. He never once imagined he'd eventually end up standing on a housing estate in Leicester at 5.30am, interviewing the general public and inviting them to put their neighbourhood on the map by streaking for the camera.

In February 1996 Richard joined Live Tv as reporter/presenter. However, this did incur certain risks. When he turned up to cover the State Opening of Parliament with News Bunny he was promptly banned, and Damon Albarn once threw beer over Richard for trying to interview him as he was leaving a nightclub at 2.30am.

Richard's career attained new heights in February 1997 when he became BBC ONE's 24th Blue Peter presenter. He tried his hand at water-skiing barefoot, exploring the Arctic and making a DVD-player out of a cardboard box, piece of string and sticky back plastic.

March 2000 marked Richard's début as The Big Breakfast's 'man on the road' – a position that had previously been filled by such luminaries as Cheggers and Barbara Windsor. His first OB report filled him with horror as 'Bob', a self-confessed expert plate-spinner, turned out to be very amateurish indeed and totally messed it up. It made for great television however, and Richard now thrives on the totally 'raw' aspect of live TV and the thrill of the unexpected. Perfectly at ease amongst the public at large, Richard admits that he'd prefer to interview a real person rather than a celebrity any day – "Members of the public have far more comic value."

Richard recently participated as a panellist on Have I Got News For You and survived to tell the tale.
