Best known for his portrayal as irascible pensioner Victor Meldrew in the BBC comedy series One Foot In The Grave, Richard Wilson is an actor and theatre director whose onscreen career spans more than forty years.

Born in Greenock in 1936, Richard trained as a lab technician at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow and did his National Service with the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving in Singapore. After completing national service, he moved to London and got a job in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Unit at Paddington General Hospital. He switched to acting in his late twenties; at the age of twenty-seven, he was accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), graduating two years later.

One of his first television roles was as Lord Capulet in a 1965 version of Romeo And Juliet. He then went on to appear as a QC in Crown Court and as Dr. Gordon Thorpe in Only When I Laugh. He has also appeared in Cluedo, two episodes of Doctor Who and in an episode of Father Ted called 'The Mainland', where he plays himself.

His film work includes A Passage To India, A Dry White Season (with Marlon Brando) and The Man Who Knew Too Little.

Richard is a supporter of the Labour Party. He has never married and was awarded an OBE for his services to drama in 1994.
