He studied pre-law at the University of Pennsylvania, and earning his undergrad degree in 1990. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, in 1993 and took a job in Los Angeles with a law firm.

When the LA branch of the firm closed in 1994, Gant remained in California to pursue an acting career. At first, he landed small roles and guest appearances on several television programs, including "My So-Called Life," "Step by Step," "Melrose Place," "Friends," "Becker", and "Ellen." In 1996, Robert was selected from a pool of more than 500 applicants to reprise the role of the Good Humor Man; he donned a white suit and black bow tie, drove a Good Humor ice cream truck, and sang and danced in a series of commercials for the Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream Company. He also appeared in commercials for Coors Light beer, Saturn cars, and Hanes underwear (with Michael Jordan).

Robert later had recurring guest star roles on "Caroline in the City," as Caroline's (Lea Thompson's) boyfriend Trevor, and on "Popular," as Vice Principal (and then Principal) Calvin Krupps of Kenney ( as in "Jackie O") High School. In Spring 2002, he joined the cast of "Queer as Folk" as Ben Bruckner, a professor of literature and gay studies who develops a romantic relationship with one of the show's main characters, Michael (played by Hal Sparks.) I think Ben was the perfect addition to Queer as Folk hide show

He was at home on Liberty Ave, but he also wanted more than that life, as in a home and a family. And in Michael he found that. The fact that he was HIV positive bought a whole new dimension to his character, and the way he dealt with this, not letting it take over his life and living each day to the fullest, was wonderful. He was friends with everyone and fought hard for everything he believed in. I think the storylines that he was involved, from his HIV, to rescuing Hunter from the streets, to his marriage to Michael and building a home with him, showcased the amazing acting ability of Robert.

    Ben hide show

I really thought that, though he had a principal role on the show Queer as Folk, he was slightly underused. Though he did have his time on the screen and it was those times that I enjoyed. While I don't think he fit as well into the Liberty Avenue group as Justin, or the others did for that matter, that was part of the charm. He had a place with them and he had a place with Michael, his husband. It felt like just the right mix of words, the right mix of places for his character to land and be. Robert did an excellent job with the portrayal of Ben and serious kudos are deserved.
