Rose, daughter of Jane, a primary school administrator, and Robin Byrne, a semi-retired statistician and market researcher, was born in Sydney, Australia. She attended Balmain Public School and Hunters Hill High School before attending Bradfield Senior College in North Sydney. She has an older brother, George, and two older sisters, Alice and Lucy.
She began taking acting classes at age eight, joining the Australian Theatre for Young People and also attended the University of Sydney. In 1999, Byrne studied acting at the Atlantic Theatre Company developed by David Mamet and William H. Macy. After acting in several Australian televisions shows in the late 1990's, she got her big screen break in 2002 when she played handmaiden, Dormé, to Natalie Portman's character, Padmé Amidala, in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones.
Her biggest break came in 2004 when was given the role of Briseis opposite Brad Pitt in the movie Troy. After this role, she was recognized as one of the most promising actresses in Hollywood. In 2005, Rose left Los Angeles and moved to London where she owns a house with her sister. In 2007, she was cast opposite Glenn Close in the critically-acclaimed and Emmy-nominated FX drama, Damages.
