During the casting period for The Golden Girls, Rue was originally asked to read the role of sweet, naive Rose Nylund. Rue really wanted to play Blanche Devereaux, however, and after reading through as Rose, they eventually decided that Blanche was a better part for her.

And I just thought, "Oh, no, that would be absolute agony if I couldn't play Blanche!" And finally they said, "Why don't you try Blanche?" and I said, "Well, if you insist....."
