Ryan grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, lettering in various sports at his high school, then going on to play football at the University of Colorado. Drafted by the Ravens in their 1998 NFL fifth round, Ryan was released before the season began but was picked up by the Carolina Panthers. Misfortune struck, sidelining Ryan with a serious shoulder injury in his first play in the first game. He subsequently played one season for Barcelona Dragons in the European Football League.
