A Moon Star is Born

Episode Number: 1    Season Num: 1    First Aired: Monday September 11, 1995    Prod Code: C01
A clumsy girl named Serena Tsukino starts her day as normal; she's late to school! Along the way, she runs into some little kids poking at a hurt animal. She chases them away and sees its a black cat with a bandage on its head. She pulls the bandage off to reveal a crescent moon on the cat's forehead. She realizes she's still late and runs off. This cat's name is Luna, and she was sent here to find Sailor Moon. After failing another test, Serena goes to her best friend's (Molly) mother's jewelry shop (OSAP) for a sale. Everything is 99% off! Serena decides to leave because of the crowd. She's resting when Luna breaks in and starts talking. Serena thinks she's crazy, but Luna gives her a locket with a moon on it. Serena picks it up and says the words Luna tells her to, "Moon Prism Power," and Serena transforms into Sailor Moon. Using her radars in her hair, Sailor Moon senses that Molly is in trouble. It seems Molly's mother is really a monster. Sailor Moon breaks in to stop her, but the monster attacks with hypnotized zombie people. Sailor Moon panics, but a red rose flies down. She looks up to find a caped man named Tuxedo Mask. Luna tells Sailor Moon to use her tiara on the monster. She uses "Moon Tiara Magic" and the monster turns to dust. This was an act of the evil Negaverse, out to collect human energy. Is Serena ready to protect the universe from evil?

Notes

add »
Serena's English last name is "Campbell", although it is not actually revealed. (edit)
In the French version, Serena is called Bunny Rivière. (edit)
The name Sarina is short for Serinity.

The nicknames for the name Serinity include; Sara, Sarafina, Sarina, and Subrina. (edit)
Serena wears a japanese school uniform, yet the shirt to it seems way to short, if you wear a school uniform, it has to be proper as in no dangling earing, no chains, no heavy make up ect. yet Serena's uniform top seems to only cover about half her stomach, whch is not practical. (edit)
Japanese Title: 「泣き虫うさぎの華麗なる変身」 - "Crybaby Usagi's Magnificent Transformation" (edit)

Quotes

add »
Serena: Moon Prism Power! (edit)
Serena: I just wanna play Sailor V games. I don't wanna live them!!! (edit)
Molly's Mother: 20 carats of real diamond, but for you 10 dollars.
Molly and Serena: 20 CARATS, 10 DOLLARS?!
Horde of Shoppers: MINE!!! (edit)
Serena: I'm hallucinating, I'm hallucinating!
Luna: (Stands on Serena's head) SERENA YOU ARE NOT HALLUCINATING! (edit)

Trivia

add »
When Sailor Moon saves Molly she gets a cut on her leg, but in her next scene the cut is gone. (edit)
In the original Japanese version the test Serena took was an English test. In the dub it is changed to an Algebra test. (edit)
After Serena and Molly enter the shop Molly's mum is yelling into a Megaphone
'Today only, everything in the store is 90 percent off!' but when she puts down the Megaphone she keeps yelling 'Please feel free to try on anything.'
Her voice is still loud as if she was talking into the megaphone but how can that be if she put it away from her lips. (edit)
This episode does not have the Today on Sailor Moon segment. (edit)
•All transformations of the scouts have been edited to remove body lines. There are no Sailor Scouts, but Sailor Soldiers in the original version.
•The Sailor Says segments at the end of each episode did not exist in the original episodes, nor did the computer graphics that make the screens change (like the big tiara forming). The Sailor Says segments were removed in seasons 4~5 when a new dubber, CWI, took control.
•Luna was originally a teenager like Serena, but obtained a "nanny" character in the dub, smack-down to her British accent.
•In the original, Sailor Moon's attack was called "Moon Tiara Action," not "Moon Tiara Magic."
•In the original, Serena was Usagi, Darien was Momaru, and Tuxedo Mask was Tuxedo Kamen.
•Some scenes were cut, such as a scene of Serena kicking a door while acting like her favorite super-hero, Sailor V, and hurting herself.
•Some of the scene where Serena's mother attacked her after seeing her bad grade was cut.
•In the original, Serena's school was called "Juuban High," not "Crossroads Junior High."
•In the dub, DiC cut out the words "Make-Up" from the end of Serena's transformation, making it just "Moon Prism Power" instead of "Moon Prism Power Make-Up!"
•Due to major "butchering" to episodes, the music was also completely removed and changed to an original "DiC" collection. It's not bad, but rather repetetive and overused.
•Queen Beryl is talking to the "Negaforce," but in the original, this Negaforce is really a sleeping empress named Metallia. Also, in the original, it was the "Dark Kingdom," not the "Negaverse."
•In the original, the Game Center (arcade) was called the Crown Arcade.
•Instead of being just "monsters," they were called Youmas in the original.
•At the end of her transformation, Sailor Moon makes a V simbol over her eyes. This was originaly Sailor V's pose.
•When Sailor Moon does the "In the name of the moon" speech, Sailor Moon makes the sign for 'I Love You" with her hands. You know with thumb, index and pinky out.
•"Saban" ("Power Rangers")decided to make their own Sailor Moon, that mixed, CGI, Live Action, and Cartoon in one. "Luna" was white, while the "scouts" were mixed of races, and even in a wheel chair. People weren't to keen on the idea, and DiC decided to pick and "Dub" 65 original episodes, rather than the US making their own Sailor Moon series (ala "Power Rangers"). This would explain the Sailor Moon Car/Fighting Mobile that they had as a toy, in which the Japanese Series had no indication of a Sailor Moon Car, because it was actually Saban's them design.
•More changes were made to Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R than Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon Super S because of DICs more strict rules
•According to the DIC Promo tape, thanks to the "http://toonamiarsensal.com", Serena was original going to be named Victoria, Amy => Lu, Raye => Dana, Lita => Sela, and Mina => Carrie, and Tuxedo Mask => The Masked Tuxedo. Queen Beryl and Luna kept their names.
•Have you noticed that when Serena's little red things that are on her hair and they flash and she hears Molly's voice? Well, this doesn't happen in any other episode at all!!
•In the Manga, Serena is called Bunny. Usagi is japanese for Bunny. (edit)

Series: Opening Sequences

The way the first season's opening sequence begins (with the the words moving up on the screen) is a reference to how the Star Wars movies open up with a description of the episode. (edit)
The title is an allusion to the phrase 'A Star is Born'. (edit)
Moral: If someone from a jewelry store offers you a 20 Karat diamond for $10, don't yell it, or else you'll be trampled by a mob. (edit)
