Salma Hayek: Biography

Born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, Salma and her brother, Sami, were raised by their Spanish mother and Lebanese father in a strict Catholic household. Growing up in an oil-rich boomtown, they wanted for nothing. When she was 12 years old, she attended a convent school in New Orleans, Louisiana, but was expelled for unruly behavior and constant practical joking. As a teenager, she lived with her aunt in Houston, Texas until she had graduated from high school. She later enrolled in Mexico City's Universidad Iberoamericana and was bitten by the acting bug.

She dropped out of university to pursue an acting career. Her first break was working in a soap opera, Teresa, in Mexico. The show was a huge success and Salma knew her star was rising. When she decided to leave the show in 1991, her fans were so shocked at her departure that unfounded rumors of her having had an affair with the President of Mexico prompted her departure.

When Salma arrived in Los Angeles, her dreams of acting in films hit a roadblock. She found that Latin women were generally cast in stereotypical roles of maids or prostitutes. She did manage to land small roles in television shows like Street Justice and The Sinbad Show, but the more substantial roles she sought continued to elude her.

Frustrated, she was booked on Paul Rodriguez's late night Spanish language talk show and unloaded her pent-up anger during the interview. To her good fortune, producer Robert Rodriguezand his wife, Elizabeth Avellan, were watching the interview and were impressed by her obvious intelligence, her passion and her beauty. Both thought she would be ideal for the film Roberto was producing: Desperado starring Antonio Banderas. The big budget sequel to El Mariachi put Salma on Hollywood's radar. After playing a cameo role in Rodriguez's follow-up film, From Dusk til Dawn, studio offers began to roll in. After varying degrees of financial and critical success with films like The Faculty, Fools Rush In, Wild Wild West and Dogma, Salma put on the producers hat and breathed life into the role she dreamed of for many years, Frida Kahlo. In the appropriately titled Frida, Salma played the title role in the biopic of one of Mexico's most celebrated painters. The film was a critical success and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including "Best Actress" for Salma Hayek. She was the first Latino woman to ever be nominated for that award. She didn't win that night, but the film walked away with the Oscars for "Best Make-Up" and "Best Original Score".

After firmly establishing herself as an actress and a producer in Hollywood, she moved into another field that interested her: television production. Her first project as a television executive producer was In the Time of the Butterflies, starring herself and Edward James Olmos. After a few other television movies, she brought Ugly Betty to the air in 2006. The show is based on a Columbian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea". In her ongoing crusade to break with the Hollywood stereotypes, Ugly Betty focuses on the life of fashion magazine employee, Betty Suarez, who is sweet, hard working and smart, but not as thin and beautiful as her co-workers. In 2007, the show picked up a Golden Globe for Best Comedy. Its star, America Ferrera, won an Emmy that same year for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Salma and Henri Pinault, son of billionaire Francois Pinault, welcomed they're daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, into their lives. She was born on September 21 2007. The couple had planned to be married, but the relationship had gone through several ups and downs over the years. As of November 2008, they had begun reconcilling.

  • Salma: I started out in Hollywood at the same time as Jennifer Lopez. Before us, Latinas only had roles that were part of the backdrop, as the maid or the prostitute. We changed that. Of course, you're always looking for those Meryl Streep parts, but I am grateful for the things I did.(edit)
  • Salma: You can be a thousand different women. It's your choice which one you want to be. It's about freedom and sovereignty. You celebrate who you are. You say, "This is my kingdom."(edit)
  • Salma: (revealing she might not necessarily marry boyfriend Francois-Henri Pinault) I don't have a need for marriage. You want to grow old with someone, you want to have a partner and to have children - we have all those things. Some people need the commitment. Maybe we'll just have the party!(edit)
  • Salma: I don't like the way the Bible views women, this thing about the Virgin Mary conceiving a child without having sex, so if you conceive a child by having sex, there's a subliminal message that there's something dirty about it. And this is what makes us divine. I mean, the possibility of creating another life should remind women that we are creators, that we are made like God in our ability. There is nothing greater than to create another human being. (edit)
  • Salma: I started having problems with certain beliefs. Like in Africa, where people are dying of AIDS and overpopulation, the Catholic Church is going over to convert them and take away the condoms! And I said, wait a minute. (edit)
  • Salma: (on working with Colin Farrell) I was a little bit worried about working with Colin. I was like, "I'm going to have to set him straight!" [But he was] never a problem. Always on time, always showed up--but always showed up passionate about the job, passionate about work, eager in the rehearsal(edit)
  • Salma: (responding to the critics who were saying that she was showing a lot of skin in the movie After the Sunset) We were in the Bahamas! What do you want me to wear, clothes? It was hot in there! (laughs) Are you complaining?(edit)
  • Salma: (on the nudity scenes during the movie Frida) Being naked is never easy. It took a lot of courage to do this part because the nudity has a lot to do with the intimacy of the characters. The scene on the beach represents how this woman is a free spirit, full of life, full of passion, with a twisted sense of humor. But it was very very cold. I actually had to take something special to keep my body warm. There were risks of hypothermia.(edit)
  • Salma: (on her six Oscar nominations for her work on Frida) Very, very excited. I am very excited that we have six Oscar nominations. I am also excited that other friends of mine are nominated for other movies and for Felipe Fernandez del Paso who is the production designer in the movie. He is a very old friend. Felipe was on the set of Teresa - the TV show I did in Mexico. He would come and visit me and now we are going to the Oscars together!(edit)
  • Salma: (on her singing and dancing Diana Ross imitation in Velocity) No! It was easy! I watched a tape of her and studied what she did. I memorized it really fast and that was it. I really do love Diana Ross; I grew up listening to her records. I grew up in a little town in Mexico, so while we got the music, we never got the experience of watching her. I only knew what she looked like from my mom's albums covers. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" has got to be one of my favorite songs ever.(edit)
  • Salma: (explaining how her dog alerted her to a gas leak in her home) I had a headache and went to lie down when Diva woke me up grabbing my sleeve in her mouth and trying to pull me out of the house. Then I realised the gas was on!(edit)
  • Salma: You know how macho boys get when they're all together? Well, the set of Desperado was like that. They were all trying to put me down, saying, 'Bring on the stuntwoman, Salma can't do that.' But I did everything. The scene where Antonio and I jump across two buildings was great. They put cables on us and it really was like flying. I didn't want to stop. I kept saying, 'Can we do it one more time?' I had a blast...(edit)
  • Salma: When I finally decided to leave school and pursue acting, my parents didn't take it very lightly. My friends thought that it was the tackiest thing they'd ever heard of. Acting was really beneath them. They couldn't believe that I would want to become an actress. Not now, of course.(edit)
  • Salma: People often say that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder,' and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.(edit)
  • Salma: My driving abilities from Mexico have helped me get through Hollywood.(edit)
  • Salma: Life is tough, and if you have the ability to laugh at it you have the ability to enjoy it.(edit)
  • Salma: I'm a bit of an abstract figure that people can project their fantasies on; it's pretty much what we all are, otherwise we wouldn't be stars, and people wouldn't be interested. But people project things on you that have nothing to do with what you really are, or they see a little something and then exaggerate it. And you can't really control that.(edit)
  • Salma: I have gotten a lot more attention than...other women that I find incredibly beautiful. And this has happened to me ever since I was a girl, when I was flat, had no teeth, was skinny and small as I could be. I always got more attention than anyone else. If I hadn't, I would have made sure I did.(edit)
  • Salma: Before you do anything, think. If you do something to try and impress someone, to be loved, accepted or even to get someone's attention, stop and think. So many people are busy trying to create an image, they die in the process.(edit)
  • Salma: I'd rather be a little heavier but nice, rather than skinny and bitchy.(edit)
  • Salma: Go for the style that fits your body type the best. Have your own voice in the way you dress.(edit)
  • Salma: I keep waiting to meet a man who has more balls than I do.(edit)
