A Matter of Life and BreathEpisode Number: 5 Season Num: 1 First Aired: Friday February 11, 1972 Prod Code: 105 |
The episode would feature an outdoor shot (Lamont driving his truck), the first seen in the series. This was fairly common during the first season but would become a rarity in subsequent seasons.
(edit)
This episode is based on the Steptoe and Son episode, "TB or Not TB", written by Alan Galton and Ray Simpson.

Lamont: (telling Fred about the Breathmobile) I don't think you understand me, Pop. It's free.
Fred: I can go down to the County Hospital and get some birth control pills for free, but you don't see me running down there, do you? (edit) Receptionist: (to Fred) Where do you live?
Fred: 9114 South Central Avenue.
Receptionist: That's in Los Angeles.
Fred: Sure ain't Beverly Hills, honey. (edit) Receptionist: Do you (talking to Fred and Lamont) live together?
Fred and Lamont: If you call it that. (edit) Lamont: You burned my bed?!
Fred: Yeah, I burned your bed.
Lamont: Why!?
Fred: Because I thought your bed might be contaminated! (edit) Lamont: Would you go in there!?
Fred: I ain't going in there with that old ugly white woman! (edit) Fred: She's pretty. Now, she's got T.B.
Lamont: What?
Fred: Terrific Body! (edit) Fred: They (cigarettes) killed a friend of mine in Durham, North Carolina.
Lamont: You see?
Fred: Got killed by a tobacco truck. The truck ran over his nice, clean lungs. I was smoking at his funeral trying to relax! (edit) Fred: (after coughing up a lung) Smoking less, but enjoying it more! (edit) Lamont: You're a dirty old man, you know that?
Fred: And I'm gonna be one until I'm a dead old man! (edit) Nurse: (hits Fred's behind)Tuck it in!
Fred: I'll tuck it in if you tuck yours in! (edit)

Lamont claims that Fred is a chain-smoker who has been smoking since he was a child. But we only see him smoking in this episode, we never saw it before or after.
