Lamont's friend Herman has just gotten out of prison and doesn't have a place to stay. So Lamont invites him to stay at the Sanford residence. However, when Grady learns that he's an ex-con, he nails down everything in the house. Meanwhile, Lamont finds Herman a job at Esther's hardware store and doesn't tell her that he has served time.

Esther: Lamont, the truth is not a toy. You cannot play with the truth. The truth is hard, firm, ragged rock, which is as old as the world itself.
Grady: The truth reminds me a lot of you, Esther. (edit) Esther: You hear anything from Fred?
Grady: Well, yeah. He said he was enjoying himself with his family.
Esther: Did he send any regards?
Grady: Well, sort of. He said that he had visited the St. Louis Zoo.
Esther: Watch it, Grady.
Grady: And he was having a wonderful time.
Esther: Yeah.
Grady: And he wished that I was there.
Esther: Be careful.
Grady: And was sure you already were!
Esther: That did it! (edit) Lamont: Now, Herman is not a killer.
Grady: Well, how come he went to prison?
Lamont: Because of circumstantial evidence. He just happened to be at the scene of a crime.
Grady: Oh, you just happened to be at the scene of a crime? What were you doing there?
Herman: Committing it. (edit) Grady: I’ve got two big ones riding on it! (Herman returns with a brand-new portable radio) Wh-what took you so long? You must be out of practice!
Herman: Oh, no, man; I didn’t want to break in and steal Julio’s radio.
Grady: Well, where did you get it from?
Herman: Martel's Appliance Store.
Grady: Martel's? Are you crazy? Stealing a radio from Martel's when they got color televisions? You know, I dislike a thief, but I hate the dumb ones! (edit) Grady: Oh, hello there Lester!
Aunt Esther: ESTHER...No L!
Grady: Well, Noel and Merry Christmas to you! (edit)
