Ten years ago, Judy Edwards left Lamont stranded, and cancelled any hopes Lamont had of marrying her. Last night, Fred picks the same woman up in a bar, and begins to make wedding plans herself.

They are surprised, but coy about it when Fred introduces them. But when Fred steps out, they are open and honest. Judy admits that she doesn't really love Fred, but that time is running out. Lamont suggests that Judy marry him instead.

When Fred returns, Lamont and Judy admit their fling. Fred is confused, for he had only been gone for five minutes. Fred and Lamont take the discussion to the kitchen, leaving Judy stranded in the living room.

When they return to Judy, she is gone. She had left a note saying that she couldn't marry either one of them. For they are already married, implying to each other. Fred and Lamont don't understand the allegory.
