Scrubs: Episode Trivia
TRIVIA GUIDE:
- If you freeze the play at roughly seven minutes into the episode (at the end of J.D.'s sitcom fantasy), Dr. Cox says "What the hell are you doing?", J.D. glances at the TV where you can see a picture of Dr. Cox pushing the same patient whom he is currently pushing.
- Carla first saddles J.D. with the nickname "Bambi" in this episode.
- In the ending credits for the first and last time in the show, it's played a longer version of "Superman" by Lazlo Bane instead of just the notes score.
- During Ted's orientation in the beginning of the episode we can see Matt Winston's character, Dr. Jeffrey Steadman, without glasses, although in all his other appearences in this and other episodes he's never without them.
- In the scene where J.D. is dreaming about racing Elliot, the Janitor is seen standing in the crowd across the finish line.
- Featured Music:
"Away" by Leroy (J.D. gets ready for his first day)
"I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap Trick (Elliot races J.D.)
"Over Me" by Tricky (Turk assists J.D. in draining Mrs. Pratt's stomach fluid)
"Please Forgive Me" by David Gray (J.D. experiences his first night on-call) - This episode is the only one in which you ever see Elliot wearing glasses. She wears them during the second round of the episode and she never wears them again.
- The guy in the MRI machine near the end of the episode is played by Michael Hobert, who plays Lonnie from season three on.
- The Scrubs theme song is "Superman" by Lazlo Bane.
- In the scene with J.D. actually performing a procedure towards the end of the episode, Dr. Cox calls J.D. "J.D.", not some other girl name.
- During the scene in which Dr. Cox is telling J.D. "Dr. Kelso is the most evil human being on the planet", the "dead" old lady sitting behind him in the wheelchair has her glasses on from one angle, and then off in another. Also when Dr. Cox wheels her around, her glasses continually disappear and reappear between shots.
- In this episode, we find out that Turk's mother is a Jehovah's witness after Elliot makes a joke about crazy Jehovah witnesses.
- The scene after the opening when J.D. is walking into the hospital, is the exact same scene used in the first episode.
- In J.D. and Turk's apartment Elliot grabs a photo of Turk and his mother. If you watch carefully you'll realise the actress in the photo is not the same one who plays Turk's mother in other episodes.
- The Janitor claims that he's 37 years old.
- Featured Music:
"Good Time" by Leroy (Played on J.D.'s walkman) - This is the first episode in which Dr. Cox calls J.D. a girl's name (Susan). It also marks the first appearance of Rowdy.
- When J.D. imagines that a patient is Turk, Turk is wearing the patient's robe. However, less than a minute later, when he imagines that Laverne is Turk, Turk is wearing green scrubs, instead of the scrubs Laverne was using.
- In this episode Elliot has no problem using the word "penis", even though in future episodes it is made perfectly clear that it makes Elliot uncomfortable.
- This is one of the episodes that Turk wears a stethoscope.
- Maybe due to the fact they have only one scene together in this episode, Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Girl Name.
- This episode marks the first time Turk plays basketball in the series.
- When J.D. has less than a minute to kiss Elliot, he starts running, after talking to Turk, who asked him if Nurse Roberts had given him these shoes, and we see that he is wearing those shoes. However, two minutes before that, when Turk appears, he is wearing normal green shoes.
- Featured Music:
"A Little Respect" by Erasure (Several times throughout the episode) - This episode marks the first time that we see Ted sing.
- When Turk is with his patient he says "thanks I'll take your fruit cup", but when he gets up he leaves the fruit cup on the tray and grabs the red jello.
- When Turk's patient David assumed that no-one has ever hard of "The Catch", Turk replies with: "Joe Montana to Dwight Clark, NFC Championship game, no time left on the clock." This is not entirely true, as there were 51 seconds left on the clock at the time of "The Catch".
- When J.D. is avoiding to enter Mrs. Tanner's room and is forced to do so only by the Janitor and his floor polisher machine, if you watch the scene carefully you can see the Janitor's shadow in the corridor, meaning he was just around the corner all the time.
- In this episode Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Girl Name, making it the second in a row (probably the longest period of time this happened).
- This episode marks the first time the Grim Reaper (also known as Death) appears in the show.
- In the opening scene, J.D and Turk's anatomy model on the mantle is wearing a George W. Bush mask.
- Featured Music:
"Dracula from Houston" by the Butthole Surfers (Opening scene)
"Hallelujah" by John Cale (Final scene) - In the scene where 'a ton of bricks' falls on J.D., if you watch carefully you'll notice that he flinches a second before they fall, indicating that he knew what was about to happen.
- The music in two of the sequences in this episode was changed by the time it got to DVD; the music when it was originally aired included a song called: "Why We Gotta Die?"
- When J.D. asks Mrs. Tanner if she lived in another country, in Japanese, she says, "I lived in Kyoto for about five years".
- When J.D. and Death are playing Connect-4, if you count the number of chips placed, J.D. has placed eight, whereas Death has just placed his sixth to win. Since each player in Connect-4 places their chips in turn, it seems that J.D. placed two extra chips at some point during the game. Yes, J.D. was apparently trying to "cheat Death".
- The opening scene features a fantasy sequence where J.D. "rewinds" a fight between Elliot and Carla so he can "do over" his part in the whole thing. The first run through, Carla says: "If she's from el barrio, she must not like music". Second time, she changes the line by saying: "If she grew up in the barrio, she must not like classical music".
- Just after Dr. Cox says that someone should call it, and Elliot runs in to show her boobs to the patient, you can see that she doesn't pull the shirt up high enough to reveal her breasts.
- During the Family Feud scene about "what guys want to see more than anything in the whole wide world", the board reads:
BOOBS 93
THE ROCK 4
BEER SANDWICHES 2
WORLD PEACE 1 - J.D.'s Girl Names: Margaret (twice)
- In the beginning of the Star Wars satire both Dr. Kelso and Dr. Cox are holding what appears to be pen-lightsabers, but later when there's a close up of Dr. Cox, he's holding a real lightsaber.
- During the episode there are several scenes in which we can see Zach Braff's hair is short inserted between others in which his hair is big.
- In the scene where Turk is running in the corridor to retrieve the pen he gave to Carla, if you watch carefully you can see Lela Lee, who plays the surgical intern Bonnie, although she's using blue scrubs instead of green ones and wasn't credited, which may be related to the fact that this episode was originally scheduled to be aired before "My Old Lady", where Lela Lee's Bonnie has her first lines.
- In the scene where J.D. hits Dr. Steadman in the head with a golf ball, we can perfectly see his ball was thrown forward before the camera shot shifts to show Dr. Steadman's face being hit.
- If you watch carefully the scene in which Elliot shows her breasts to her kid patient, you can see Sarah Chalke is wearing a beige band over her breasts.
- The woman portrayed as Carla's mother in this episode is different from the one shown in pictures throughout the series.
- The garden used in Dr. Cox's memory scene is the same used for J.D.'s fantasy in the last episode.
- J.D.'s Girl Names: Agnes.
- As previously said, during the first season the Janitor was going to be a part of J.D.'s imagination and as such never interacted with the other characters. Nevertheless, in this episode Elliot talks to him when she misses the trash can and spills coffee on the floor he's cleaning.
- Featured Music:
"Me and Mrs. Jones" by Billy Paul (performed by Donald Faison)
"Good Life" by Francis Dunnery - This episode is the first time we hear that Perry is Dr. Cox's first name.
- When J.D. passes Turk, Carla & Elliot in the cafeteria you can clearly see two plates of food on Turk's tray but as he and Elliot exit the line, to find a seat, he only has a piece of cake and a small milk.
- In this episode, Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Girl Name, probably because the only thing he could think of was Carla's relationship problems with Turk.
- When J.D. talks to the Janitor, who is in the elevator, the light of the 4th floor is on, but on the wall behind the Janitor there's a huge blue number 2 indicating the floor.
- Featured Music:
"Electric Relaxation" by A Tribe Called Quest
"Camera One" by Josh Joplin
- The posters/billboards promoting Sacred Heart include the phrases:
"Wellness through diversity"
"Time to get an EKG, G"
"Our MD's have Mad Skills"
"WAZZUP? Your white blood cell count at Sacred Heart" - J.D.'s Girl Name: Supergirl
- J.D.'s Dog Name: Doogie
- When Turk and Carla are discussing her problem regarding Elliot, behind Turk the clock shows 2:25, then 2:20 and then after a quick apology from J.D., who just popped up, 2:35.
- Ted tells Dr. Kelso when he started working at Sacred Heart, he had hair. In a later episode, he tells other characters that he got his high school girlfriend by posing as her friend's dad because he lost his hair in 8th grade.
- Featured Music:
"Going Out With A Bang" by G-Sleep
"See Ya Around" by Keren DeBerg
"Wonderful" by Everclear
"The Magican" by Bobby McCall & Dontrell Mayfield
- The posters/billboards promoting Sacred Heart include the phrases:
- In this episode Dr. Cox didn't call J.D. any Girl or Dog Name, which happened probably because he was too worried with his former mentor, Dr. Benson.
- In the scene Turk is operating J.D.'s appendix we can see behind Turk a wall full of x-rays, meaning the "O.R." is actually the x-ray room.
- In the scene in which Elliot stumbles and because of that spills food in a patient's face, we can perfectly see there was no spaghetti on the plate and, if you watch carefully, you can see the spaghetti was already in the patient's face.
- Featured Music:
"Hooch" by Everything
"Fuzzy" by Incredible Moses Leroy
"The Magican" by Bobby McCall & Dontrell Mayfield - The song, The Magican by Bobby McCall & Dontrell Mayfield was featured in this episode and last episode.
- In the Fat Albert reaction shots, look closely. Donald Faison, who plays Turk, is at the bottom left. All the other actors are guest stars.
- Dr. Kelso didn't become Chief of Medicine in the '70s, he became a doctor in the '70s. We find out in the third episode that he's been in the medical profession for around 30 years. Unless I'm mistaken, hospitals don't promote somebody to Chief of Medicine on their first day. Therefore, it's entirely possible for Dr. Benson to have been Chief of Medicine while Dr. Cox was starting out as a doctor.
- Dr. Cox claims to have worked under Dr. Benson when Benson was the Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart. However, in later episodes it is revealed that Kelso first became Chief of Medicine in the 70's and that Dr. Cox has been at Sacred Heart for about 20 years, which would mean that Dr. Cox could never have worked under any Chief of Medicine other than Dr. Kelso.
- Turk says he is going to make the incision on J.D.'s right side of the abdomen to remove the appendix. However, when he's actually doing the surgery he's cutting on J.D.'s left side, which is very awkward since all normal people's appendices are on the right one. Nevertheless, when Turk check's up on J.D. later in the episode he checks the incision which is on the right side.
- One of the things Dr. Cox quizzes J.D. about is whether he completed his SOAP notes. These are a record-keeping method used by a variety of medical fields-- human, veterinary, etc-- to document interactions between patients and caregivers. SOAP is an acronym for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan. A more detailed explanation can be found on Wikipedia under "SOAP note."
- J.D gets the new nickname Scooter from the Janitor which is short for Scooter Pie. Janitor says he doesn't like Scooter Pie.
- J.D.'s Girl Names: Janet and Ginger
- Featured Music:
"On Fire" by Sebadoh (original cut)
or
"Heard Ya Talkin'" by Jeremy Kay (DVD cut) - If Dr Kelso sits on the bench for lunch every day, where is he on the first day that Turk sits there?
- When Dr Kelso pages Turk to trick him into giving up the bench, as Turk runs into the room shouting "I was paged," you can clearly see a hand keeping the door to the room open.
- This episode shows the first out of two appearances by the famous Nurse Tisdale, described as the hottest woman in the hosital. Her second appearance is in season four, Episode 13: "My Ocardial Infarction".
- In this episode, Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Dog Name. He's very profusive with the Girl Names, though.
- In J.D.'s fantasy about Turk being a shepherd, if you watch carefully the two women of the choir right behind him keep waving to the camera until they start singing.
- According to actor Zach Braff (JD) in the 'Happy Days' fantasy seen, he was very hung over. You will clearly notice this if you watch that sequence again.
- Featured Music:
"Moving in Stereo" by The Cars
"Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and His Comets
A Parody of "The Twelve Days of Christmas"
"Sinnerman" by Nina Simone
"Deck the Halls" Arranged by Jan Stevens - Twelve Days Of Christmas: Sacred Heart Version:
On the first day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
A drunk who drove into a tree
On the second day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Two shattered skulls
And a drunk who drove into a tree...
Twelve beaten children
Eleven drive-by shootings
Ten frozen homeless
Nine amputations
Eight burn victims
Seven strangled shoppers
Six random knifings
Five suicides
Four beaten wives
Three O.D.'s
Two shattered skulls
And a drunk who drove into a tree - J.D.'s Girl Names: Judy, Marjorie and Sally.
- Dr. Cox likes his coffee with sugar and no cream.
- In this episode Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Dog Name.
- J.D.'s Girl Names: Ginger
- When Dr. Cox leaves Elliot in the deceased patient's room, if you watch carefully, you can see the board behind him in which the patients first initials are standing out forming BPR MALIBU.
- When J.D. and Turk are talking in the doctors' lounge, Turk's hands change position after a camera shift. First he's holding a box of handkerchiefs by its sides, but later his hands are on top of it.
- This episode marks the second time the Grim Reaper, also known as Death, appears.
- This episode marks the first time in the entire series Dr. Cox called Elliot Barbie.
- When Elliot is needed to play catcher to Dr. Cox's pitcher, she's wearing a left-handed first baseman's mitt. Elliot is seen writing with her right hand later in the episode.
- Featured Music:
"Easy Tonight" by Five For Fighting - When Dr. Cox tells everyone that he has kept every patient in the ICU alive so far and wants to keep it that way, Elliot tries to talk to him, only to be shushed by J.D. He then uses the sports metaphor that people don't do anything to disrupt a pitcher when he has a chance to throw a perfect game. Ironic, because even though he easily relates to sports here, in the later seasons, J.D. seems to be an absolute dunce when it comes to sports, claiming he doesn't know what kind of sport Barry Bonds plays, thinking "slam dunk" is a football term, and that basketballs come three to a can.
- When the ICU patient dies Elliot called his time of death 1155 hours where in fact she should have said 2355 hours as he died 5 minutes before midnight not 5 minutes before noon.
- When J.D. is in the MRI room, the MRI is supposedly on, but it's not making any noise at all, and he still is wearing his pager, stethoscope, watch, etc. In reality, a doctor would not take any metal objects into a room with an MRI scanner.
- During the original airing, the song Easy Tonight by Five For Fighting was used. It's not present in the DVD version, but can still faintly be heard during the commentary track.
Creator Bill Lawrence says that he asked the band to use another song for an episode Michael J. Fox appeared in, and they turned him down. Therefore, he didn't want to give them any more money to license this episode's song for the DVD. - When Alex and J.D. are holding hands, Alex checks for a wedding ring on J.D.'s right hand, not his left, where a wedding ring is usually worn.
- In this episode Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Dog Name.
- J.D.'s Girl Names: Clarabelle and Lillian (through a pager message)
- In the end scene in which Alex and J.D. make their peace, if you watch carefully you can see the elevator's light indicate it's the third floor, although the plate in the wall beside Alex reads "2ND FLOOR SOUTH".
- Carla and Elliot (and Turk and Todd at the same time) start talking about Carla not having an orgasm before J.D. tells Dr. Cox what is Mr. Yeager's disease. Nevertheless, their conversation is still in the same point it was left when the scene shifted to J.D. being 80 minutes late to his date with Alex.
- Just before J.D. tells Dr. Cox he thinks Mr. Yeager has Kuru, if you watch very carefully, Jim Coari (who plays Mr. Yeager) is opening and closing his mouth, probably due to discomfort of having a tube in his mouth.
- For the first time (and probably the only) Dr. Cox calls Doug by his name.
- Featured Music:
"New Slang" by The Shins - It is revealed that Elliot never had an orgasm before this episode.
- In this episode Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Dog Name.
- J.D.'s Girl Names: Grace
- In the scene Carla loses the bus to the hospital and asks Dr. Kelso for a ride, we can perfectly see there's no traffic in the street and that Dr. Kelso's car is parked, not delayed by the bus in front of it, leaving no reason whatsoever to Dr. Kelso to be there since he doesn't live in the neighbourhood and just passes in that street when heading to the hospital (as we can see when he splashes water on Carla in a later scene).
- Featured Music:
"Fighting For My Love" by Nil Lara
"1812 Overture (Opus 49)" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
- In this episode Dr. Cox doesn't call J.D. any Girl Name, probably because he's too focused on the hospital psychiatrist interview.
- In the scene Carla is criticizing Turk's comments about one of the nurses, between the camera shifts there's another nurse seated behind her, then there isn't, then there she's again and finally there she isn't.
- As previously said, during the first season the Janitor was going to be a part of J.D.'s imagination and as such should never interact with the other characters. Nevertheless, once more we can perfectly see him interacting with other characters. In the beginning of this episode the Janitor not only annoys Nurse Laverne with the floor polisher machine, but J.D. and Elliot laugh about it.
- In the beginning of the episode, J.D. thinks of Elliot as his best friend when he wakes up and is afraid of the morning-after conversation. But actually Turk is his best friend as he states in all other series episodes.
- Featured Music:
"Ever Fallen in Love? (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" by the Buzzcocks.
"Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba (J.D.'s monologue) - The pizza is a symbolic "clock" of sorts that represents how much time J.D. and Elliot's relationship has left.
- J.D and Elliot spend all day in bed, and make out as if they are having amazing sex. However, only two episodes before this one, in My Balancing Act, Elliot reveals that she is not good at having sex, refers to sex as "intercourse", and has never even had an orgasm.
How is it she went from being so clueless to an absolute master so quickly? - J.D. marks Elliot on his tallyboard of girls he's slept with, saying he's been stuck on #4 since med school, but he slept with Jordan just a few episodes ago.
- Elliot comments that she's going to need a "vagina transplant". As we know from the rest of the series, Elliot never says the word 'vagina', instead replacing it with 'Bajingo'.
- When Turk and Elliot are watching/talking about Red Dawn, she talks about the Russians invading Michigan. But in the film the Russians are invading Colorado.
- J.D.'s Girl Names: Marsha, Gloria
- This episode marks the second time Ted sings in the show.
- J.D. and Dr. Cox's bar scenes are interspersed with Elliot and Turk's studying ones. Nevertheless, in the last bar scene Dr. Cox says it's 2 a.m. whilst in Turk and Elliot's previous one we can perfectly see the clock on the wall showing 6:36 p.m.
- Never before in the series J.D. was shown wearing pajamas as his sleepwear. Actually, most of the times he was shown awakening or going to sleep he was wearing a T-shirt and shorts. Hence, the red onesie he wears on this episode was probably an addition to make his pub scene with Dr. Cox more funny.
- Featured Music:
"Talk Dirty to Me" by Poison
"Have It All" by Jeremy Kay (Elliot helps J.D.) - When everyone is on the roof fixing to throw the watermelons off the roof, you see all four of them throwing one but when they show the watermelons hitting the ground you only see three of them hitting.
The fourth one is only in view for four frames. Watch the bottom left corner. Looks like it's the one thrown by Donald Faison. - J.D. only throws two things off the roof. The ground is clean before anything hits the ground, and Elliot declares that it's time for the finale before they throw the watermellons, so it is clear that it is all that has been thrown. When the Janitor is seen cleaning up the mess, there are more objects and something orange that were not there before.
- Approximately 1 minute 54 seconds into the episode, right after Dr. Cox calls Elliot, J.D. and Turk "Mod Squad", as they are walking away from him around the corner, J.D. lifts his arms and in the process, the top of his scrubs. His waistline shows, and you can clearly see the microphone cable running up his belly from his waistline.
- The intro of this episode is one single shot.
- J.D.'s Girl Name: Shirley
- In the end of the episode, when Dr. Cox is talking with Kristen in his apartment, we can perfectly see by the furniture this is not the same one used on My Mentor.
- As previously said, during the first season the Janitor was going to be a part of J.D.'s imagination and as such should never interact with the other characters. Nevertheless, once again we can perfectly see him interacting with other characters. In the beginning of this episode the Janitor stares at J.D. while talking on the phone, making Turk stare back at him.
- Featured Music:
"Attitude" by The Replacements
"High Time" by Michael Penn - When Elliot and Dr. Kelso are in the closet, you can see continuity errors with Elliot's hair in each cut of that scene.
- In the scene where J.D. is asking Dr. Cox about Mr. Simon, Dr. Cox's raincoat is zipped down to his chest in one shot, then the camera switches to J.D., and in the next shot Dr. Cox's jacket is zipped all the way up.
- Turk claims that Dr. Kelso uses the word: "Bunny" in his lyrics because no-one writes love songs with the name: "Enid". However, there is a song by the Barenaked Ladies called "Enid".
- Featured Music:
"Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
"My Tuscaloosa Heart" by Ken Jenkins - In the flashback where J.D. walks into his parents room at night while they're having sex, the "father" speaks and it's obvious that it's Dr. Cox doing the voice.
- J.D.'s female name for this episode is Reba.
- In this episode we find out that J.D.'s resident is actually Dr. Steadman, who is referred to as Kelso's lapdog. We first meet him in "My First Day" or the Pilot where he introduces himself and is then seen as repeating "I am a tool" and "I am a dork" for the rest of the episode.
- In the episode "My Mentor", Turk tells Eliot that his mother is one of Jehovah's Witnesses. However, in this episode, she does not react the way a JW would about Turk and Carla's premarital relationship, and J.D. references an incident at Thanksgiving which JW's do not celebrate.
- In this episode, J.D. starts believing in Karma when he ridicules Turk and his father shows up. This will play a larger part in the season two episode, My Karma.
- Turk's mother says he'd look better in blue scrubs, although green is the colour for surgeons at Sacred Heart. For a short period after, Turk wears blue scrubs, until Carla realises something disturbing at which point he changes back to green.
- In this episode, we apparently meet the Janitor's dad, but in episode "My Words of Wisdom" the Janitor states that his father died when he was young. This means that what he said was a lie or the man in this episode isn't really his father.
- In the episode "My Mentor" Elliot says that Turk's mother looks like Morgan Freeman because she has freckles. But it's clear that she looks nothing like Morgan Freeman.
- In the scene where Carla realizes that she and Turk's mom are the same and Turk's mom freezes, she is clearly seen moving and blinking while holding the pose.
- Featured Music:
"Surrender" by Cheap Trick - In the scene where J.D. is talking to his dad in the cafeteria, you can see a bottle of water appear and disappear in the various shots.
- J.D.'s father's (John Ritter) final line when he asks J.D. to pull his finger and then says, "I pooed a little," was totally improvised and Zach Braff had to bite the insides of his cheeks to stop himself laughing.
- The set they used when J.D. was talking to his dad (played by John Ritter) when he was younger was the set to be used for "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter", which starred John Ritter as the father.
- In the scene where J.D. first explains that Turk is competitive, Turk introduces a game where the first person to throw the hat on Rowdy wins. At first they're playing the game with a red hat however it then shows Turk win and the hat is now black.
- This episode features a group of doctors as patients of Sacred Heart Hospital. The doctors are played by Ed Begley Jr., Eric Laneuville, William Daniels and Stephen Furst. All four actors had recurring roles as doctors on the show St. Elsewhere.
- In Latin America, during the entire episode, Dr. Cox's name was subtitled as "Dr. Kox".
- When J.D. asks Dr. Cox for his patient back in the locker room, Dr. Cox puts on his lab coat and they start walking down the hall way. However, when the scene switches back and forth you can notice that the collar on Dr. Cox's lab coat changes continuously.
- Featured Music:
"All In My Head" by Shawn Mullins.
"Upside Down" by Jackpot.
- Dr. Kelso always calls the interns for their last names (including the surgeons). However, he called Todd by his first name.
- J.D.'s female names given to him by Dr. Cox in this episode are Janice, Gladys and Carla.
- Ben is in the hospital originally due to the fact that he shot a nail through his hand. Later in the episode when he goes out to talk to J.D. and show him the pictures he took, he shows no sign of having anything wrong with his hand. In fact, he lifts himself up onto the railing to sit down using the palms of his hands. This shows how J.D. is daydreaming the whole time Ben actually has Leukemia because reality does not show.
- In the first scene where Carla approaches J.D. to talk to him about his search for a mistake in Ben's test results, she says "either your instincts are right, or your brain is trying to protect you from something". In the flashback to this scene later on, Carla says "either your instincts are right, or your brain is trying to protect you from the truth".
- In the scene when J.D., Elliot, Carla and Turk are eating in the cafeteria there is a goof with J.D. and Elliott's drink. At the beginning of the scene J.D. is drinking what looks like apple juice and Elliot is drinking milk. At the end of the scene when J.D. is paged to go get Ben's results they've switched drinks.
However, this drink switch might signal the moment in the episode where J.D. begins to imagine a sequence of events, because he has already realized that Ben has cancer.
- The Janitor states that J.D's first kiss was with a girl named Sara Briggs. His future girlfriend on the show is named Kim Briggs.
- The Janitor breaking into J.D.'s locker and reading his diary was foreshadowed in the previous episode, when Ben's photographs of the Janitor included a shot of him poking his head out from behind a block of lockers. This is similar to the shot of the Janitor appearing from behind the same block of lockers in this episode.
- J.D.'s female name given to him in this episode by Dr. Cox is Rhonda.
- During the part in the episode where J.D. is saying that everyone feels alone, many of the cast members are shown doing the same thing. In the commentary, it is revealed that Judy Reyes did the movements like a mirror image so they flipped it in editing. This is why you can see Carla's name tag on the side of her scrubs opposite the one she normally wears it on.
- The procedure that Todd says he wants to perform is the whipple procedure, the same procedure that Turk wanted.
- Featured Music:
"Speedracer" and "Underdog" performed by The Blanks
"Fresh Feeling" by Eels - While the characters are watching the TV show Wings, J.D. and Dr. Cox talk about how much they like the character played by Tony Shaloub. Tony Shaloub would later star on the TV show Monk and beat out Zach Braff for an Emmy in 2005.
- The janitor reveals that J.D.'s first kiss was with a girl named Sarah Briggs and sometimes he wonders if she still thinks about him. On the DVD commentary creator Bill Lawrence reveals that his high-school girlfriend was named Sarah Briggs and sometimes he wonders if she still thinks about him.
- The writers originally wanted to use the "Superman" theme for the episode, but they couldn't afford the rights. So they went with "Underdog" instead.
- J.D's middle name is Michael.
- When The Worthless Peons sing and J.D. walks past, the items on the desk change from a pile of folders with a bedpan on top to a different pile of folders and a box of medical supplies in only a few seconds.
- Surgery board mistakes: Appendix is spelled "Apendix", Varicocele is spelled "Varicoscale", Tonsillectomy is spelled " Toncilectomy".
- Reversed X-Ray: When the X-Ray with the word "SCRUBS" is placed on the light box, it is reversed with the heart on the wrong side. Of course, there is a small percentage of people who actually have their heart on the right side of the body. All of their internal organs are flipped, so they appear to be a mirror image.
In the commentary for the Scrubs Pilot on the Season 1 DVD, Bill Lawrence explains that the name of the show 'Scrubs' is a double meaning - they wear scrubs, and they are scrubs - medicore, the ones who make mistakes. Hence, the X-Ray is backwards because essentially the interns who sometimes screw up.
- In the beginning scene with Carla and Turk arguing, when J.D. has fantasy after saying that couples try to rope you into arguments, we see what is supposed to be J.D. being roped, but when the rope goes around his body, you can clearly see that the hands are those of an african-american.
- When Elliot looks for Jordan, her back is shown, then Elliot is shown saying her name, and then Jordan turns around. The exact same thing happens with Turk and Carla when they look for Dr. Wen. But, when J.D. looks for Dr. Cox, he's back isn't shown before J.D. appears.
- J.D.'s female name given to him by Dr. Cox in this episode is Charlotte.
- Carla finds out that Dr. Cox is attracted to her and that Turk knew but didn't tell her.
- J.D. learns that Elliot still has feeling for him.
- Dr. Cox finds out that J.D. had sex with Jordan and that Dr. Kelso lied to him about the new job promotion.
