In the opening scene, the ex-magistrate Harold Fitzwalter (Alan Cassell) is seen blowing up a public toilet with a homemade bomb.

Laura takes a morning dip in the ocean which is extremely cold, there she ecounters Diver Dan who confront her on the bad choice she has made to go swimming that early in the morning. After her rather unpleasant swim, Laura frantically gets ready for her first day as Magistrate but is finding it increasingly difficult to find anything among the unpacked boxes which she refuses to unpack because she is determined to get out of her contract with Bob Jelly.

Enter Angus Kabiri (Tom Long)- On the way to the courthouse, Laura meets a local surfer by the name of Angus who turns out to be her Clerk. When Laura, the kids and Angus walk into Laura's new office they find the local policewoman, Karen Miller (Kate Atkinson) who is Angus' on again/off again girlfriend trying on a veil with Meredith (Jill Forster). Being not happy about this, Laura is even more annoyed because her office was used the night before as a retirement party for Harold and it has been trashed.

In court Laura is shocked when her first case is to rule over Harold for blowing up the Toilet block and after she is approached by Meredith who tells her of Harolds past, Laura does not put him in jail. Her next case is against Bob Jelly which has Bob quaking in his boots after treating Laura so bad over the house and not realising she was the magistrate. He shows up at the house and tries to make nice in an attempt to win Laura over.

Rupert while at Dan's shack confides in Trevor Finlay (Christopher Lyons) a local boy, about his dad being arrested for fraud. Trevor's mother is also in jail for armed robbery.

Bob, as all part of his plan to settle things with Laura, invites her and her kids over to his house to meet the family which doesn't go well when Miranda has a tough time enduring Bobs daughter Jules (Bryony Price) and Rupert who is taken surfing by Bobs son Craig (Cameron Nugent).

Laura takes the kids out for Dinner at the Tropical Star, a local hotel and restauraunt which is run by Meredith. There they have the most gourmet dinner which to Laura's suprise was cooked by none other than Diver Dan who earlier in the episode could not manage to make a ham cheese sandwich.

The episode ends with Kevin Finlay (Kevin Harrington) and his son Trevor talking together on the beach. This is how every episode is ended except for the Pilot.
