Who Burned the Reichstag?

Aired: Thursday July 1, 1976

The Reichstag, seat of the German parliament, was burned on 27 February 1933, was a pivotal moment in German history. Hermann Göring declared that the fire had been started by Communists, and President von Hindenburg signed the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspending the basic rights provisions of the Weimar constitution. Were Communists to blame, or did elements within Chancellor Hitler's Nazi party start the fire? Barlow and Watt sift through the evidence.
