Elaine pretends she is going deaf to avoid having to make small talk with a limo driver. Jerry and George go to a tennis match and Jerry becomes enamored with a line judge. He tells George he wants to go up to her and ask her out. George tells him he isn't one of 'those guys' that can approach beautiful women they've never met and get a date. Jerry proves him wrong by calling out to her after the match. At first she doesn't respond, which makes him think she's being rude, until he realizes she's deaf. George gets dumped by a woman who uses the line "It's not you, it's me," which George claims he invented. He tells her "If it's anyone, it's me." She admits he's right and he storms off. Since George is sad about his break up, Jerry lets him come along on his dinner date with the deaf line judge. It turns out she can lip read, and she tells them that a woman at another table is breaking up with her boyfriend, using the "it's not you, it's me" line. George and Jerry unsuccessfully attempt to have a conversation with each other without the deaf woman reading their lips. They stretch, turn, and use their hands and napkins to cover their mouths as George asks Jerry to invite the deaf woman to a party his ex will be at so that she can read his ex's lips and find out why she really broke up with him. The deaf woman was able to tell what they were saying and says she'll do it before Jerry even asks. At the party Jerry introduces the deaf woman to Kramer who claims he knows sign language. The deaf woman signs to Kramer what George's ex is saying so that he can pass the message on to George, but he misinterprets her signs and tells George that his ex is propositioning another man for sex. Furious, George breaks up their conversation and yells at his ex, who explains that she asked the man to help her clean up after the party by "sweeping with her," not "sleeping with her." Kramer tries out to be a ball boy at the U.S. Open, and despite mocking from the younger boys, he gets the job. As he chases a ball that hits the net, he trips Monica Seles, causing them both to fall.
