After Katrina, Sela's son Austin, who was 11 at the time, started his emergency preparedness kits company with help from her and his dad; profits go to Hope Village for Children.

Sela initiated and partially funded the creation of an emergency shelter for children who are awaiting placement in foster homes, called Hope Village. Hope Village is on a 30-acre property once used as a masonic orphanage, and was opened in her hometown of Meridian, MS in January, 2002. In 2005, it housed, educated, and counseled more than 140 children.
