Fox will continue to produce hit animated comedy without striking Seth MacFarlane; showrunner calls it "a colossal dick move."

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane isn't your typical showrunner--he's much, much more. The outspoken producer is the lifeblood of the animated hit as he oversees its creation, writes episodes, and provides voices for several of the main characters, including Peter, Brian, Stewie, and Glen "Ohhhhhh yeah!" Quagmire.

But now the Family is moving on without its patriarch. 20th Century Fox Television is proceeding with production of the hit show while Seth MacFarlane walks the picket lines of the Writers Guild of America strike.

Last week, MacFarlane told Variety that only one new episode of Family Guy was ready to go, and that several others were close to completion. However, he said that while the strike was ongoing, he wouldn't perform any of his duties (writing or nonwriting) on the show and that Fox would have to finish the episodes without him--something he jokingly said would make him "angry."

The words got a little more serious yesterday, as the possibility of Fox moving on with Family Guy without him inches closer to reality.

"It would be a colossal dick move if they did that," MacFarlane told Variety yesterday. He added: "It's going to be unfortunate and damaging to our relationship if they do."

Legally, 20th Century Fox Television is doing nothing wrong by finishing up the Family Guy episodes, as they produce the show. However, it will be doing so without MacFarlane's final nod of approval.

As for the voices on the show, a source close to the production of Family Guy confirmed to TV.com that there won't be any Seth MacFarlane impersonators voicing Peter or any of the other characters. The voice work was recorded by the original actors many moons ago.

Representatives from 20th Century Fox Television had no comment on the matter.

Sunday's episode of Family Guy sees Peter fighting for immigrant rights after he discovers he was born in Mexico. The show will feature guest voices from Carrie Fisher and Phyllis Diller. For more on Family Guy, read TV.com's previous coverage.

Wow. So many people apparently don't understand - the episodes they are working on were created WITH Seth McFarlane - he performed every one of his normal roles on all episodes in question. The ONLY difference is that he isn't sitting there giving a literal "thumbs up" to the finished product, as if he has ever used his executive position to ax an episode in the past. There is only minor post production work to be done, and Seth is blatantly misrepresenting the situation. For FOX not to finish up the post production and air the episodes would be utterly ridiculous.

Is everyone out there a doorknob? There's one simple solution: BOYCOTT the episodes. Don't watch them on TV and don't buy the DVD's. As a writer in Canada and a fan if Fox does air the unfinished episodes without the consent of Seth MacFarlane...count me out! Wake up America!

No executive will pay half a million per episode to an average show actor. Only high quality shows that will keep the audience viewing, those actors will receive a higher pay. Regular actors in sub-par shows, which that is every show since there has been nothing good on television for years, receive a pittance-like salary. Although let's not forget their hammy acting which puts them in the low income bracket.

Bad move by Fox, but when has Fox been known for making good programing choices. And to all the people that complain about the strike think about this, in a average TV show the actors get paid up to and beyond half a million dollars per show. The writers who make sure there is a show get paid around $40,000 a year. There is no show with out writers but the show can go on with out the main actors. Just food for thought writers are unappreciated in Hollywood. have a nice day

I guess we learned two morals from this story; Fox is a money hungry capitalist organization and second, well... Seth is the king.

to go on with out Seth is ridicules he's been the voices and force behind too many characters to just throw him aside. although i may not agree with the strike. i certainly do not agree with continuing the show with out him

Well if this isn't a massively stupid move by Fox. Pretty sure that MacFarlene will be incredibly annoyed by this and that pretty much spells the end for Family Guy and one of my fav shows.

i hate that the writters are striking because it messes up the shows and the stories but they do deserve more compentsation for the work they do if the shows will be on the internet, etc. If they do continue with the shows after tonight's then it will go down the hill. they need seth for the voices and he's a writter on the show. i think fox is at fault for doing this, they all need to sit down and settle this crap so i can go on with my tv life.

The writers should NOT get everything they want. Fox should go ahead with their plans to air episodes without MacFarlane that way he has enough time to think about what he is doing and come up with a good episode for once. Peter Griffin is a mexican immigrant? What type of garbage is that? Family Guy was only funny for the first three seasons, after it got cancelled and then brought back it started to suck!!! Just like the simpsons which really suck now, family guy should just end on what people think as a high note. What? Simpsons suck?, yes the simpsons have had nothing but excruciatingly terrible episode since the 14th seasons. I loved the simpsons but now I really hate the new episodes and can't even stand watching previews for new episodes. That's what happens when you give writers whatever they want, they don't think of writing good episode all they think of is just more money and another script written.

This just goes to show that idiots are running the networks these days. If they had just given in to the writer's demands, this wouldn't have happened.

Sounded like McFarlane is unable to keep to a schedule and maybe that contributed to the show's previous demise. His attitude now might see the final nail put in it's coffin. Shame really, I like the show (not enough to watch it religiously though).

At the end of the day, it's MacFarlane's fault, not the network. I agree that FOX is making the wrong move by trying to do it without him, their best option would have been to cancel the show until the strike is over. Sure, it'd annoy the viewers, but then maybe they'd start putting the pressure on the strikers to get their whining butts back to work.

this could be a problem since this is Seth's show, I could see after the contract is up Seth shopping it around to other networks, I think Cartoon Network would be the first choice since they pretty much helped Family Guy become such a cult hit

Choosing not to fulfill his non writing duties was McFarlane's choice, and his choice alone. One that is reprehensible and in contract violation. FOX has every reason to finish the episode's needed production, and it will NOT affect the quality of the episodes in the least given that it is an animated series and all that should be left is basic editing and post production work. It is the right of unions to go on strike, but they have to live with the consequences when they do. Particularly in cases where they do not act in their capacities that are not on strike.

I take no sides when it comes to the strike overall, because I believe this is the way problems are solved in America. However, you don't go on with ANY show PERIOD. This will not only produce a show that will not live up to the expectation, but this could also be the end of the show. Either way, all sides will lose.

Well, I never credited Fox with having good sense and it doesn't look like they're planning to start any time soon. While I think Family Guy has declined in quality, to remove its voice (both literally and figuratively) and think you can do the show just as good is...well, it's what the South Park writers postulated about the manatees. And while that concept is very amusing, MacFarlane has an ear for banal conversation, musicals, and other aspects that make the show unique. I wouldn't be surprised if after this, MacFarlane and his team just quit and started a new show on a different network.

I think they are making a BIG mistake by doing this without Seth. First of all, Seth is the brains and the humor behind family guy. I think the last thing Fox needs to do is piss him off.

    11/15/2007 12:10:38

What's there to finish up, really? All they need to do is take the Simpsons scripts, cross out "Simpsons", write in "Family Guy", and all done! :-) Seriously, with 8 month lead times for the episodes due to animation, lines having been recorded "moons ago", etc., there's no excuse for only one episode being ready by the time the strike hit. There were no reports like this for The Simpsons or King Of the Hill.

I was about to say Fox isn't beyond screwing Seth over, but this sucks for him, regardless. Sorta like the interview I read with Shawn Ryan, about how because of the strike, no writers will be around for the shooting of the series finale for the Shield, nor will they (or he) be attending the series wrap party. Madness all around.

Fox already cancelled Family Guy before and realized what a huge mistake it was before bringing it back. I think the network is pretty *ed up to keep jerking Seth McFarlane around. But like the last user said, it's Fox. They are the most respectable network around. They obviously don't respect the people they work with.
