Yoh Asakura, a young shaman, comes to town to prepare for the twice-a-millennium Shaman tournament. Yoh has a unique temperament – part warrior, part slacker. He meets his first friend, Morty, a funny, short kid who can see ghosts. When Morty is beat up by Rio and his Dead Ender Gang, Yoh teams up with Amidamaru, a 600 year old Samurai to teach Rio a lesson.

Morty's growing curiosity about Yoh prompts him to study "The Knucklehead's Guide to Shamans and Spirits". Together they begin the journey to find Yoh's guardian ghost – the spirit that will be his partner in the World Shaman Tournament. Along the way they discover an ancient secret about Amidamaru and set out to right a centuries old wrong. Amidamaru agrees to join Yoh in his quest to become Shaman King.

Morty receives a threatening telepathic message from Lenny, a new Shaman in town. Lenny wants to be King of the Shamans and vows to destroy Yoh. When Yoh and Amidamaru battle Lenny and his Guardian Ghost, a giant Chinese warrior named Bason, they go down in defeat.

A rematch between Yoh and Lenny is also a battle between two Shaman philosophies. Yoh believes a gaurdian ghost is a friend and the stronger your bond, the more powerful the team. On the other side, Lenny believes in a master-servant relationship and requires complete and total compliance from his guardian ghost. In a fierce battle, Yoh and Amidamaru find their trust and belief in each other and with it they find the power to win.

Yoh's fiancee, Anna Kyoyama comes and sees Yoh in the hospital. Anna is an extremely tough trainer for Yoh and really puts him to the test.

Morty wants to see the new kung-fu movie starring his favorite character Lee Pai-Long but he mysteriously disappeared 17 years ago. Jun wants to take Yoh's guardian ghost to give to her brother, Lenny, but when Yoh refuses Jun reveals her secret weapon none other than the kung-fu hero himself Lee Pai-Long.

Yoh, Amidamaru and Lee Pai Long continue to fight. Now, Yoh is equipped with Rio's wooden sword, plus, he has the spirit of Shaolin (Pai Long's master).

Rio wants to become a Shaman, but he must go through one of Anna's back-breaking training sessions. Durng one of Yoh's running sessions, Yoh, Rio and Morty are ambushed by Jun and Lenny's cousin Ginny.

Whilst Yoh and Morty are walking they find a person on the side walk, sleeping. With Trey (the sleeping man) awake Yoh decides to take him back to his house. Anna and the rest of the gang are not pleased with this, but learn to cope with it. But could Trey be a shaman as well as Yoh? If so what side is he on?

When Rio is tired of Anna's training sessions, Rio decides to take a short break. But in a bowling alley, an evil spirit called Tokegaroh takes over Rio's body and makes him commit crimes and start a fight with Yoh.

In order to save Rio, Yoh must make the ultimate sacrifice by Tokageroh possesssing Yoh to prove the others that Tokageroh is a good spirit. But can Yoh truly risk it?

In the morning, Rio discovers that he has became a Shaman.

In order to participate in the Shaman Tournament, Yoh and Amidamaru must pass one Final Test - hit Silva one time. Silva is using multi medians so making it harder for yoh to hit him

Yoh's first match of the Shaman Fight is against no other than his pal, Trey.

Yoh's next opponent, Faust VIII is told to be one of the most dangerous Shaman. On Faust's first match, Faust killed his last opponent.

The fight with Faust VIII and Yoh continue. Yoh does not look good as he is losing the fight because of Morty. Faust is about to destroy Yoh for insulting his Elisa but Len saves him.

Yoh goes back home for more training and learns that the only way to increase his power is to attempt a journey through the dreaded Tunnel of Tartarus, a place so dangerous it could cost him his life. Meanwhile, Morty embarks on a road trip with Rio to save his friendship with Yoh, unaware that a sinister force is following him.

Yoh must go through the ultimate test. The Tunnel of Tartarus must be walken through without a Spirit. Meanwhile Morty and Rio are traveling to find Yoh.

Yoh finds out that the next person he is versing in the Shaman Tournament is no other than, Lenny. And the fight begins.....

The fight between Yoh and Lenny continues. Whoever wins will advance into the next round of the Shaman Tournament. But who is the winner.....

Uncle En is furious than Lenny could not defeat Yoh even though Len still advanced into the next round.

Yoh, Rio, Trey and Morty head off to China in search for Len and his evil uncle.

Pai Long Dragon attacks Yoh, Trey and Rio. Pai Long is being controlled by Uncle En and it seems impossible for him to stop.

Len backs off Yoh, Trey and Rio - Lenny tells the crew that he must defeat Uncle En on his own.
