It was a great episode to say the least. Choco, the new guy, jokes a lot but his jokes almost always fall flat but his spirit attacks are cool. hide show

I was kind of saddened that Lyserg was replaced by Choco. Yes, Choco is a lot faster than Lyserg but I think that in terms of power, Lyserg and Chloe would beat Choco and Mic.

The jokes of Choco almost always fall flat and I am kind of surprise that I found myself laughing to some of his unfunny humor. His spirit fusion is cool (and I kept wondering what would happen to Yoh and the gang if they try Spirit Fusion with their Guardian Ghosts) and his spirit attacks seem cool (especially in the future episodes) but his only saving grace is his speed and claws. Without his speed, he would just be one pathetic shaman.

The episode per se is great although the conclusion where Choco used his ultimate move is disappointing. I mean Winds of Laughter? Come on.

Lyzerg sure is missing out with Chocolove coming into the group, but judging from his personality, he wouldn't have cared anyways. hide show

Shortly after hitch hiking their way to a town (not through Billy mind you) they meet a shaman named Chocolove, who's an information expert, as well as comedian. He wants to join Yoh's group because many of the shamans in the tournament are creating groups in order to strengthen their chances of finding this Patch Village. Unfortunately for Chocolove, since he has a habit of using whatever comes out of anyone's mouths of jokes, he's been kicked out by many teams. Yoh likes him, but Ren demands that he proves he is useful to their cause. Conveniently, two of Hao's minions appear and attack the crew. Ren decides to take care of them alone, but Chocolove reveals that the two fake bodies were oversouls, exploiting the real body. Chocolove wanted to prove he's worthy, and defeats his opponent through laughter. He's accepted into the group due to his exceptional battle performance. Meanwhile, Anna and Manta arrive in America. But when Manta rendevouzs with Anna, Faust VIII is acccompanying him. He really wants to see Eliza again, and Anna promises she'll reunite the two if he assists Yoh.

A very solid episode. This Chocolove at first sight seems to be your normal joker of the group, but what kind of gives him substance is that he uses his laughter to defeat his enemies. And his style of comedy is much different than other jokers in other anime series. Though for English speakers who don't know Japanese that are watching the sub like me will have a hard time enjoying most of Chocolove's jokes since it involves him mostly poking fun of Japanese grammar. At least he's not one dimensional, and has another special trait of information collecting. The catch too is that in other animes or mangas, the creators might randomly add another trait to their characters to make it seem like they have depth when it feels forced. Chocolove's special abilities of information collecting and joking feels natural. While his past was short lived and wasn't really that deep, it did provide some attachment to Chocolove's character in general. The episode couldn't have ended more perfectly. When a character leaves, and another joins, it seems like another one will also join with them.

  • Choco's Guardian Ghost, Mic Jaguar, was an inspiration of Mick Jagger, one of the founder of the band Rolling Stones. []
  • We now know that Anna's spirits and new powers are far greater than Faust's, which is now very obedient. []
  • Jako's "ultimate attack" is a spiritual stage from which he tells a joke so "funny" that almsot any enemy laughs. In this episdoe the joke was: "My attack will be a naval attack", naval as in belly button. []

    Yoh: True!
    Jocko: ...Len never smiles...
    Len: (Frowning)
    Jocko: ...Rio, big hair...
    Rio: Yeah, so what?!
Jocko: ...and then there's Train Chaser!
Trey: The name is TREY RACER!
Jocko: My bad! Trey Racer it is! (Writes it in his little yellow book) []
  • Yoh: (About Choco) Well he sure knows how to take a nap, and that's a plus in my book!
Len: And unlike Rio and Trey, he TRIES to be a laughing stock. []
  • Len: Like I told Jun, I don't wear dresses! []
