Shannon Noll: Biography

Shannon first came to prominence as runner-up of the first series of Australian Idol in 2003, which led to him being signed to Sony BMG. He has gone on to release two number one, multi-platinum albums, That's What I'm Talking About and Lift and numerous top five singles. Shannon's style of music is melodic pop-rock, and heavily influenced by the likes of Bryan Adams.

Shannon was born in the Australian town of Orange, New South Wales and grew up in the small town of Condobolin in central western New South Wales. He is the third and youngest of three children to parents Sharon and Neil Noll and along with brothers Damian and Adam, spent the entire of their childhood and teenage years living on the family farm which ran sheep and cattle and grew cereal crops. During his school years, Shannon enjoyed drama s and performed in a number of school productions. Shannon has since expressed a desire to continue his acting work.

During his adult years, Shannon began working on other farms and properties shearing sheep amongst other tasks. It was during this time, Noll and his brothers formed the band called Cypress (named for the fact that they rehearsed in a timber mill), of which Shannon provided vocals and played guitar. The band played numerous small gigs around the Australian outback, playing in country pubs gaining a solid live reputation. Although the majority of songs performed by the band were cover versions of popular songs, the group enjoyed writing original music and would often perform these originals as part of their set.

Shannon's father, Neil, was tragically killed during a farming accident in 2001, which led to Shannon and his brothers to take over the running of the family farm. Following the death and two years of extreme drought, the brothers sold the farm and settled in Condobolin with their mother. Shannon often cites the death of his father as a major inspiration in his musical career, and has penned a song on his latest album Lift titled Now I Run in memorium of his late father.

It was in Condobolin where Shannon met his now wife, Rochelle Ogsten. The pair dated for 8 years before they wed in October 2005 and welcomed the arrival of sons Cody in 2001 and Blake in 2002, and daughter Sienna in 2006.

By 2003, Shannon was in debt and out of work following the sale of his family farm due to extreme drought. It was his brothers who encouraged him to travel to Sydney and audition for the 2003 debut seasion of Australian Idol. Shannon impressed the judges Mark Holden, Marcia Hines and Ian Dickson with his audition in which he performed the Southern Sons' c Hold Me In Your Arms. After his audition, Marcia Hines praised Shannon and told him that she had just discovered "a voice" and Ian Dickson informed Shannon that "...Australia will love you"

Following his initial audition, Shannon made his way into the Top 32 semi-final where he performed a rendition of Robbie Williams' hit Better Man, which impressed the viewing audience enough to vote him in as part of the Top 12. Over the 8 weeks of performance shows, Shannon found himself in the bottom 3 only once, following his performance of Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer during The 80's theme night. Throughout the show, Shannon impressed both the judges and audience with performances of songs as diverse as Powderfinger's Already Gone, to The Beatles Hey Jude to Jimmy Barnes Working Man.

If you're lucky enough to find it, then stand up and be counted", to which Wil replied: "The last thing this country (Australia) needs is a singing version of Anthony Mundine." • Shannon: I am a normal Australian bloke. I do love a beer. But I'm no different to any young bloke you'll meet who's playing football, or surfing, or working. I want to enjoy my life and have a good time.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on turning to drugs and alcohol after his father's death) You can live well, do everything right, and still be killed. So I thought I'd have a crack at everything. I didn't let myself think about him (his father) when I was smashed. Consequently, I found myself getting smashed a lot. I got to a stage where I had to own up to it. I'd turned into a zombie on the lounge. I wasn't doing anything useful.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on performing at Deep Rock Drive in Las Vegas, which hosts internet-streamed concerts) It's about bringing talent that's never been on the world stage before to a global audience. This show goes out on the web in real time, it's live from Las Vegas, so it's scary as hell but I'm really looking forward to it.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on performing at the infamous Los Angeles nightclub The Viper Room) So much has happened at a place like that, just walking in it hits you like a tonne of bricks. It's going to be a real thrill to get my 45 minutes, or whatever it may be, on stage. There's something in that to write about for sure - being a shearer or being a tractor driver and then doing a gig at The Viper Room, I don't think that would happen too often.(edit)
  • Shannon: (On his single, "In Pieces") This song is such a strong ballad and has a personal message for me. It is a song which I wrote when I was 17. I think many people will be able to relate to the message in it.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on his late father) He would have wanted me to be a good father, loving husband, responsible and just a good human in general. I am always striving to be that person and I think I am doing an okay job. It comes with age and experience, I think.(edit)
  • Shannon: (when pointed out that rain is mentioned in a lot of his songs) No affinity with rain, just that there was none of it half the time that I was growing up. Condo was always dry.(edit)
  • Shannon: (when asked if he felt more pressure for his 2nd album to succeed as he co-wrote 11 of the tracks) No, I don't feel more pressure for me to succeed, I am just proud of what I have achieved and I hope people get into it.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on coming from Condobolin, Australia) I am a country boy through and through! I will never forget my roots.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on his 2005 drink driving charge) Oh it's disappointing mate, you know, I'm disappointed in myself. It's a silly thing to do but, you know, you learn lessons through life.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on gifts from fans) A few weeks ago, a fan decided to leave me a gift. Someone dropped a flag at the front door at 3am. I have no idea why. And there was a brick in the letterbox. As someone pointed out, better there than through the window!(edit)
  • Shannon: (on suddenly being in the public eye) It's a scary thing. People turn up on my mum's doorstep, that sort of thing. Once some guy rang her up and said, 'Hey, your son, I just want you to know he's a bit of an idiot'. Mum, she's awesome. Two seconds later she had him completely convinced he was a dog. She was like, 'You think you're clever righting up a widow and saying something like that? I bet your parents would be proud,' and the guy was like, 'You know, you're right, Mrs Noll'.(edit)
  • Shannon: (on song writing) I think people either write close to their heart or keep their personal life fairly sacred. In some ways I think it's good to take stock of your life in that respect and write about it, but I suppose I've been pretty public right from the start.(edit)
