Daisies' Friel, Samantha's Applegate also in the mix; Friday Night Lights' Britton, Lost's O'Quinn snubbed from supporting actor lists.
The buzz toward this year's Emmys is getting louder, and what better way to stoke interest in an event that is still several months away than by releasing lists of people who might be nominated?
The Academy took an interesting step this year and announced the shortlists for contenders in the Best Drama and Comedy categories, but now we're back to business as usual, and The Los Angeles Times has leaked a few more lists of Emmy hopefuls.
The paper's Tom O'Neil--the guru of all awards shows--has revealed the 10 (actually, an unusual 11 in two of the three cases) finalists for Emmy consideration in the Best Comedy Actress, Best Supporting Drama Actress, and Best Supporting Drama Actor categories, and there are a few major head-scratchers.
The Best Comedy Actress shortlist features many familiar faces: 30 Rock's Tina Fey, Weeds' Mary-Louise Parker, New Adventures of Old Christine's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ugly Betty's America Ferrera, and a trio of Desperate Housewives, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, and Eva Longoria Parker. The remaining three spots are all newbies, led by one potty-mouthed comic.
Sarah Silverman, of Comedy Central's crass The Sarah Silverman Show, is one step closer to her first Emmy nod. She's joined by fellow Best Actress first-timers Anna Friel of Pushing Daisies and Christina Applegate of Samantha Who? (who previously netted an Outstanding Guest Actress for a spot on Friends).
In the ladies' Supporting Drama Actress category, Emmy collector Candice Bergen is back in the race for Boston Legal. She's joined by Jane Alexander (Tell Me You Love Me), Rose Byrne (Damages), Jill Clayburgh (Dirty Sexy Money), Sharon Gless (Burn Notice), Rachel Griffiths (Brothers and Sisters), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), S. Epatha Merkerson (Law and Order), Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment), and Chandra Wilson (Grey's Anatomy).
And in what is probably the grossest oversight of the century, Friday Night Lights' Connie Britton did not make the list, despite being downgraded to the supporting category (she made the shortlist for Lead Drama Actress last year). And while we're at it, no Lost ladies made the final cut, nor did Mad Men's January Jones.
On the men's supporting side, last year's winner will not repeat. Terry O'Quinn, who earned a much-deserved trophy for his portrayal of John Locke in Lost, did not make this year's shortlist. His castmates Naveen Andrews and Michael Emerson (a heavy favorite to win this year) did, however.
Also on the shortlist are Big Love's Bruce Dern, Boston Legal's Christian Clemenson and William Shatner, Damages' Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek, Grey's Anatomy's T.R. Knight, Mad Men's John Slattery, In Treatment's Blair Underwood, and Medium's Jake Weber.
The final Emmy nominees are scheduled to be announced on July 17. The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards show will be held September 21 in Los Angeles and broadcast on ABC.

If Sarah Silverman wins an Emmy the Earth will explode. I have foreseen it.
10/07/2008 16:18:22What about that "Sophie" girl from "In Treatment"? She's the best
07/04/2008 08:55:07go tina fey. 30 rock is the best
07/03/2008 13:12:27Best Actress- Sarah Silverman or Christina Applegate Best Supporting Actress- Candace Bergen, Sandra Oh, or Chandra Wilson Best Supporting Actor- William Shatner, Christian Clemenson, and I would say TR Knight but honestly he wasn't given the material this year..
07/03/2008 10:14:31How come Shron Gless (Burn Notice) got nominated and not Gabrielle Anwar??? Rachel Griffiths on the other hands totally agreed
07/02/2008 07:27:41It's a popularity contest, plain and simple.
07/02/2008 05:52:01As usual, I am sickened by the emmies, and their inability to actually choose nominees worthwhile and not the same ole' people "they like." Boston Legal stinks and was so close to getting canned this year, yet all of their main cast are going to be nominated again. I'll be honest, I have always respected Candice Bergen but she won so many awards for murphy brown in a row that she actually took herself out of the race by the end of that show. I really wish her and Shatner would step aside these days. As much as Terry Oquinn is by far my favorite actor on Lost, and maybe on TV overall, I am also glad he didn't get nominated again. I was so estatic he won last year....but I think a fellow Lost cast member deservees to take home that prize. Out of the crap that was just spewed above, here's who I think should win... Supporting Actor Drama-Michael Emerson. Hands down. I'd like to see Danson nominated however as his performance as the bad guy was outstanding. Best Comedy Actress-While I love Mary Louise Parker and I believe she deserves an emmy, season 3 was Wedds weakest season. I would say that Tina Fey should definitely win with felicity huffman shortly behind. Her portrayl of a battle with cancer this season certainly brought me back to this series. Supporting Actress Drama-Rose Byrne or Griffiths. Side note: I am assuming that the beloved emmy winners Glenn Close and Sally Fields will also be nominated this year in the best actress category, which may make for a reasonably competitive race.
07/02/2008 04:04:33Boring! Just give all the awards to Boston Legal...
07/01/2008 20:43:42Marcia Cross and Ted Danson should win.
07/01/2008 19:32:21why is naveen there and not henry ian cusick??!!
07/01/2008 18:19:49I'm really hoping this is Julia Louis-Dreyfus' year. Then again, all of the woman in the category are very deserving. As for the supporting drama categories, the only dramas I watch are Damages and Bones... so I'm pulling for all Damages.
07/01/2008 16:48:51Bah the Emmys are so rigged. Even though I like Terry O'Quinn I think it's good he didn't make it so another person has a chance to win. I'd be happy if either Naveen Andrews or Michael Emerson (personally I favor Emerson). I am pissed off that Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond on Lost) didn't make the cut!
07/01/2008 16:09:09Glad for In Treatment's Diane wiest and Blair Underwood and for Grey's Anatomy.
07/01/2008 15:58:15Friday Night lights features such great performances especially by Britton and i really don't understand why she isn't on this list and sandra oh or chandra wilson should definitely win fro grey's they both bring such a strength of a show
