Based on the novel by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, a merchant must give up one of his three daughters, or he will lose his life. Beauty sacrifices herself and so the story continues.
A merchant traveling home through the forest is lost in a raging blizzard.
Near death from the cold he comes upon a strange and beautiful castle. Within, a mysterious unseen host offers him food and a place to rest. Next morning, recovered, the merchant prepares to resume his journey home. But as he is leaving, he plucks a rose in the castle garden for his daughter Beauty. All at once he is confronted by a roaring, ugly beast. Angry that the merchant has dared to take one of the flowers, the beast threatens to kill the merchant unless he sends one of his three daughters to the castle within the month.
