In 1970 in the Yorkshire Dales, a group of scientists receive radio signals from space. Once decoded, these give them the ability to build a supercomputer. The computer demonstrates its power by creating a girl called Andromeda. One of the scientists decides that the computer must be destroyed. See also The Andromeda Breakthrough.

Two scientists pick up an intergalactic signal containing instructions for the construction of an advanced supercomputer. The computer is far more powerful than they had expected, amassing vast knowledge about life on Earth, and it proceeds to build a biological robot, Andromeda, from one of their dead colleagues.
