According to an interview, John K. and Donovan Cook were good friends and workers in Spumco for Ren & Stimpy. John gave his opinions about the storyboard done for the Red episodes. Since he did not want to take credit for other peoples' work, Donovan credited his opinions on the show as "tidbits of poor taste".
The part where they go to the bears' house is a direct allusion to the popular fairy tale: The Three Bears or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
When Red looks at Big Dog, she mistakes him for grandma. The image you see it that of Irene Ryan, who's remembered as the beloved Daisy "Granny" Moses on The Beverly Hillbillies.
