The final NBC broadcast from the 2006 Winter Olympic Games concluded with a time-lapse shot of the Mole Antonelliana as the sun went down over Torino. The clouds rolled past the mountains in the background.
Before the Closing Ceremony, NBC aired a documentary about Vernon Baker, a member of the Buffalo Soldiers Division (92nd Infantry Division) that helped to liberate Italy in April 1945. More than 50 years later, Lieutenant Baker received the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the assault on Castle Aghinolfi in northern Italy. After fighting the Nazis and suffering racism at home, he received a hero's welcome at the White House in 1997. He was invited to return to Italy and received a jubilant reception.
