The Closing Ceremony was inspired by the Italian Carnival, featuring clowns, acrobats, fireworks and confetti. Organizers handed out red, light-up clown noses to the athletes. Some wore the noses, while other placed them atop their heads.
At one point in the show, sky divers flew above a high-powered fan that delivered 125 mph winds in an upward direction. The acrobatic performers soared several stories above the floor of the stage, supported only by the blowing air.
Approximately 400 women dressed as brides walked onto the stage carrying lamps in the form of lilies. They formed the shape of a dove to symbolize the Olympic goals of peaceful competition.
Jacques Rogge declared the 2006 Games over and called on the youth of the world to assemble in 4 years in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
Sam Sullivan, the wheelchair-bound mayor of Vancouver, received the Olympic flag. Turin mayor Sergio Chiamparino handed the flag to International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, who placed the flagpole into a special attachment on Sullivan's wheelchair. Sullivan then drove his wheelchair around the stage in order to wave the Olympic flag. The next Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver in 2010.
Avril Lavigne, Ricky Martin and Andrea Bocelli provided the musical entertainment.
