      • Snowboard cross commentator Todd Richards: Who would have thought that elements of racing your friends down to the lodge for hot chocolate would have brought gold.

      • U.S. skier Bode Miller: Fame is like a poison. I don't care for it. I used to have a better life when I was nobody. This pressure is inhumane, born out of an athlete's need to be number one. Sport should be a pleasure, a challenge against one's self. Sport is an act of freedom. On the piste you can push your limits and that is the essence of life.

(from a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport)

    • NOTES (3)

      • Russian biathlete Olga Pyleva was withdrawn from the women's 7.5km sprint shortly before she was to start. The public address announcer stated that she was ill. In reality, she had tested positive for the banned stimulant carphedon, which increases endurance and resistance to cold. Hours later, she was dismissed from the Turin Games. She was also stripped of the silver medal she won in the 15km event on Monday.

NOTE-The silver medal total for Russia is correct. They had 3 silver medals as of yesterday, but biathlete Olga Pyleva was stripped of her silver medal in the 15km event after testing positive for the banned stimulant carphedon. The head of the Russian Anti-Doping Committee blamed the positive test on a doctor who gave Pyleva an over-the-counter medication for an ankle injury in January.

      • Snowboard cross (SBX) makes its Olympic debut today. Four competitors race simultaneously down a course filled with jumps and sharp turns. The event has been described as "roller derby on the slopes."
