The opening ceremony was held August 8, 2008 and took place in the beautiful and modern Beijing National Stadium. This thrilling display of performance art, music, athletics, and Chinese culture lasted for over four hours and included a cast of over 15,000 performers. The ceremony was widely considered an unprecedented success, dazzling audiences with a beautiful celebration of Chinese history. The show's centerpiece was a giant scroll, and the official song-You and Me, written specially for the games by Chinese composer Chen Qigang-was performed as a duet by China's Lui Huan and Britain's Sarah Brightman.
