  • A fitting conclusion to a great World Cup Finals

Wow! Like the USA-Brazil match a week ago, this game had it all, and the additional drama of it being the Final. This was another example of positive, attacking soccer that seems too often lacking in the men's game. I've also been watching the Copa America (the South American Federation Championship) and the football here has been much better. I enjoyed the World Cup a lot.

At the end of the day, defense does win Championships and the U.S. made a mess of things twice. The first goal was a complete breakdown and another poor defensive effort led to the corner that produced Japan's equalizer in extra time. None of this would have mattered if the U.S. had had just a little bit of good fortune around goal. Between hitting the crossbar, both posts, both sides and the top of the netting along with a series of near misses, this game should have been put away at half time.

I do believe the U.S. is the better team and worthy of their #1 ranking, but for today the Japanese showed a wonderful resilience and never gave up and earned their country and all of Asia their first championship. After everything that has happened in Japan this year, it is good for the nation to have something to celebrate.

I look forward to 2015 when Canada will host the world!moreless

The US women's team got the nation behind them for this tournament just like in 1999. Japan had their country behind them after the awful tsunami. Two emotional stories behind these two teams, but it was Japan who ended up prevailing by, get this, penalty kicks. What saved the US earlier in the tournament killed them in the Finals.

The US had Hope Solo in there, but she was injured and she could only do so much. She got a stop, but the US missed three shots which is inexcusable. You can't miss those penalty kicks especially given how close they are in women's play.

Big game, the world was watching and Japan completed the cinderella story for their country. The US needs to not forget about what Solo and Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan did for them in this tourney.moreless
