Oscar Pistorius of South Africa became the first amputee to compete in a track event at the Olympic Games today when he raced in a qualifying heat for the 400m event. He successfully qualified for the semifinals of the 400m.
Note that Pistorius was not the first amputee to compete in the Olympic Games, nor even the first South African amputee in the Olympics. Among the other such athletes is Natalie du Toit of South Africa, who qualified for and competed in the women's 10K open water swim marathon event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Michael Phelps finished the 2012 London Olympics as the most decorated medalist in Olympic history, with 22 medals, 18 of them gold. He had previously announced that he would retire from competitive swimming after these Olympic Games.
