This is the episode that will allow Depp's character, Tom Hanson, to be more of a rebel than a 'by-the-book' police officer. At some point, Johnny Depp outgrew his character. In order for his characterization to make sense, a story such as this one needed to be fashioned. Mostly for Depp fans only, I love this episode. Others might feel it's a waste of time. Interesting that it is a takeoff on the Rolling Stone writer Hunter S. Thompson, as Thompson later became a real-life friend of Johnny Depp (see Depp's film 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas').
