Along with the usual broken bones and heart problems, the ER team deals with a population that is becoming more and more psychologically fragile. A man with schizophrenia makes his 19th visit in a year, and a young female in crisis seeks help.
74-year-old Ted and his wife Irene are on their tenth visit to the ER this year. Ted has already been been diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer, but his problems have worsened. The staff administers CPR to a man who's suffered cardiac arrest.
80-year-old Omar arrives after suffering severe stomach pains. It's critical, and Omar may not survive the operation he needs. Over a hectic few hours, the staff fights to save a man who attempted suicide and a teen who's losing blood after a fight.
The ER ponders mortality. Former moto-racer John is sent to the ER after a routine health screening reveals a swollen artery, making him a 'walking time bomb.' 92-year-old Eileen arrives after a bad fall. Non-medics discuss their roles in the ER.
On a 12-hour night shift, the team is faced with several stabbed teens. As victims' friends gather in the ER, tension mounts. Other patients include a girl who's been punched in the face and a man who got too drunk at the House of Commons.
Jen's nightshift begins with a stabbing victim and his girlfriend, who were attacked in their bed, and an 87-year-old who, never married, fell in her home. After collapsing in the street drunk, a former international lawyer ponders a life change.
