A 24 Community
FOX (ended 2010)
THAT was one nutty half day. 24: Live Another Day has forced itself to move at a pace that was even more hectic than the 24 formula usually demands. We can argue as to whether they pulled it off. But personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

For me, 24 has 3 main ingredients:

  • The hero (or anti-hero) that will do anything for his country, to defend the innocent, or to dispense justice - Jack Bauer. Or possibly Kate Morgan?
  • The real time format shows everything that can happen if it all happens on one awful day. Bad things tend to come in bunches, and 24’s format let us see it all fall apart and come back together, at once.
  • Because 24 is “The Worst Day Ever”© – it doesn’t just give us one crisis. Multiple things go wrong at once and just when you think you have put out the fire – another unexpected one pops up. We all usually call this “Monday”

24: LAD tried to adhere to this formula while cutting in half the part of the day we see. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I hope the show’s masters realize that in order to follow the formula and not have it come out feeling rushed, as this season did at times, it needs to go back to the episode and hour format. Or maybe a happy medium of 18 hours in the 24 hour day. Before we had, say episodes 1-16 to see one major plot thread come to a close before the huge twist with a new villain revealed. In 12 episodes, the second and third plot threads have to be crammed in and it doesn’t feel as organic.

We saw how 24: LAD ended (or rather – didn’t). Hopefully the next day, the day Kate suits back up and joins with Chloe to save Jack, they consider going back to a longer format.

These parties have been a blast, guys! I want to thank you all for coming and not totally trashing my house. I don’t need you to stay and clean up – but if you would, click the HEART in the upper right corner of the page as a thank you for throwing a party a week over the last couple months!

Let’s take a look at the last hour (and part of the next day)…

…and bring “The Worst Day Ever”© to a close!

The last hour ended with Audrey in Cheng’s crosshairs. This hour begins by demonstrating he is serious about his threat.

Cheng tells and Jack and company to back off and stop pursuing him.

In exchange for allowing his escape, he will release Audrey unharmed.

As the clock ticks, the president is still in need of evidence that Cheng is behind the attack. China is upping the ante on military action and the President is reaching the point he has to escalate as well.

Jack dug up a lead — Anatol Stolnavich’s cell phone pointed towards a freighter docked at the harbor. The plan is for him to hunt down Cheng while Kate scoped out Audrey’s sniper, knowing that if Cheng learned of Jack’s approach, he’d issue the kill order.

Chloe also surfaces. She is able to use a Good Samaritan’s phone and calls Jack. After picking her up, she pleads with Jack to trust and to let her fix what her misplaced trust in Cross has caused. Chloe on the comms, y’all!

Jack and Belcheck’s begin their breach of the freighter.

Meanwhile as Kate tries to devise a plan to rescue Audrey – Jack is discovered. Learning of the attack, Chloe knows Cheng will give the kill order. Kate has to act quickly.

At first it appears they are in the clear. But a second shooter pops out of nowhere are surprises them.

It is a mortal wound. Audrey dies in Kate’s arms. Audrey has been a great character in 24. She has suffered a great deal, but was never a victim. She deserves the silent clock.

We have seen Jack give great speeches to both Chloe and Kate regarding the need to let go of past losses and mistakes. That revenge never heals the wounds. He has become almost Zen-like in his acceptance over what his life has become. But when Kate gives Jack the news that Audrey is dead …you need only look at his face to see that, at least for the next few moments, that peace will leave him.

And there is no stopping a complete and total “Jack-Out” ™

When you get to the point you stick a knife in someone’s neck to walk them backwards as a human shield…

…you have to just go ahead and do that silent clock in your head for Cheng. It is not going to end well for him.

After the CIA gets facial and voice recognition out of Cheng, giving the President the evidence to end the escalation with China…

…the video cuts out and Jack is left to deal with his nemesis.

Yeah. That’ll do it.

But when Jack and Belcheck go to retrieve Chloe – she is gone with only a few drops of blood near where she was sitting.

Jack’s phone rings.

He tells the caller he will be there.

With tears in my eyes, my friends, I give you the last Split Screens of the season.

The President oversees his daughter’s casket on to Air Force One. Kate has turned in her badge and weapon and quits the CIA, and Mark awaits his military transport back to the states to face his trial for treason.

A chopper lands. The Russians step out with Chloe. Jack is waiting. As they pass each other, Chloe tells Jack he doesn’t need to do this. He knows. But he tells her that she was right earlier.

She is his best friend. And this is what best friends do.

The chopper leaves, Jack in the custody of the Russians. And ominously…

…there is another silent clock.

I hope to see you guys on some other awful day!

With buzz-kill Audrey out of the story the sky is the limit! You know what could have made those final hours more entertaining - if they'd put 'Stonebridge' in the field with Jack and Kate. They have Phillip Winchester and he's just standing around wherever the President ended up. With that dipsh!t Mark. That's not cool. 'Strikeback' isn't coming back for a while with 'Scott' on the mend, just saying 'Stonebridge' might have been a good back up.) They didn't do it cause the shows are strikingly similar in many aspects but they have to have a better part for Winchester than just being the Navy suit.

Glad jack and Chloe mended fences. Nice ending but the chopping off of the head, (Cheng see ya!), its been so done and it seemed sort of out of place with all the guns and Jack's fists handy. Didn't that moment need to be something more? Hope they do another one and figure out how to fit it into 12 better.

I didn't check in enough, but when I did it was always a pleasure. ed's always fun to party with. Keifer really wants to do something else but he looked good being 'Jack' for another time. FOX liked it too ($$$$$$) so maybe they can convince him to come back. Yvonne Strahovski always makes things better, hope they bring her back as well.

This show's dialogue and pacing is awful, welcome to Fox i guess, maybe they need to hire some of 'Strikeback's writers? I come not to bitch, I just need another drink. i'll always love William DeVane and he's good as Heller, he deserved better to go out with than an Alzheimer storyline when its a 12 hour time span. Come on man that is television royalty. He played naked croquet in a scene with Nicolette Sheridan way before Mark Cherry even met her or was thinking about destroying her career. Should have just let him get blown up at the stadium.

At present, FOX is all about hostility towards Russia so you know this show isn't going anywhere. Is anyone else worried that Rupert Murdoch is trying to buy Time Waner and FOX may own HBO before too long?

Jack better live! We NEED another season of 24 and I vote for a 24 episode season.

I may of felt a tiny twinge of sadden when Audrey died but I preferred Renee. Her death really made Jack "Jack-Out" and it was awesome!

The silent clock at the end better not mean that the show is over for good or that Jack is dead but I fear that it means one of those options.

Sorry for being so late to the party and thank you for hosting such kick ass parties!

In no way is Jack dead. I think they leave that as an option if he decides not to return ...but I think you could see a whole season of Kate defeating evil and looking to get Jack back on the side. And then Kiefer does a cameo at the end.

Awesome is going to have a season 10, but please what is wrong with writers ? why killing Audrey ? Arrested again ? I do not know, in my opinion by radicalizing on Jack´s suffering they are missing a chance to let him be a more normal person, like he used to be... Maybe it is too late for that anyway...

Audrey has survived a lot of things in this series. 1. Her luck ran out 2. They needed to release Jack from his emotional attachment. It was her time. Am I sad? A little - but I see why they did it because the impact was exactly what they wanted in the audience and with Jack himself (Jacking-Out)

I am not sure Jack was ever a normal guy. When we met him, he was good at his job but still not exactly employee of the week. For one - he was cheating on his wife and sleeping with a co-worker at a very rules oriented organization like CTU. He was not a hero or normal. I think he has become a hero - but with a cost.

He will never live a normal life with all he has seen and done. And he will always know he is as much at fault for Terri's death as Nina was. How do you ever become "normal" after that?

I know it was hard to feel good at the end of this season. But I also think that "lousy" is EXACTLY how the writers wanted us to feel.

great finale just like all other great finales jack's fate is left in the balance, but this one was different because of the silent clock but that will make speculation even better i can bet on a full 24 season 10 just because there are a few good elements in play for a season 10

I hope you are right. As I said - ever 18 would fit OK. They said 12 would fit perfectly and I think this was an amazing season ...yet once the Cheng plot thread hit, it would have flowed better to have that connection with the Russkies develop over 6 or 7 eps ...not all in 1 ep reveal.

Sadness porn, lol. I shouldn't have expected a good ending, considering how season 1 ended. Or 6. Or 8. Or... Wait, why did I EVER think something good would come from 24?? haha Ah well, it's over now.

That was a downer on every level. Although - Jack did hold it together after his "Jack Out" (c) and noth slaughter all the Russkies.
I think they wanted it just like this so we would clamor to see Kate and Chloe rescue Jack.
WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME, DAMMIT! GIVE ME A NAME!

I don't know if this season was the most ludicrous one or if my nostalgia is preventing me from recognizing the same flaws in the previous seasons.

I'm extremely disappointed.

That was a Happy Ending...

Fully expected someone to die but not Audrey. Those pretense of safety deaths are the worst. When they are rescued only to be mown down minutes later.

Kiefer Sutherland is the best non dialogue actor in television. He has done several of these scenes over the course of 24 and it never loses its intensity. Im convinced you could actually see him age in that scene when he found out Audrey was dead. Powerful stuff.

Then, THAT scene when he slowly pulls out his hand gun but then resolves to continue fighting. Just wow. Love how he made sure it was personal by using the handgun/knife/meat cleaver/samurai sword. Cheng put up a decent fight which i found hilarious for some reason. The guy just whipped out a round house kick ON JACK from nowhere.

President Hellers scene was also Tragic. The duality of this scene and Jacks scene at the end was some of the best work 24 has done for a long time.
The pain of the day had finished Heller to the point were he is actually embracing his Alzheimer's. In that scene he is utterly destroyed but at the same time weirdly content as his disease will erase the day from his mind.

Jacks ending was similar. Audrey was the last vestige of goodness in his world. He cannot ever see Kim again, he knows that He=Death. The source of Jacks guilt is infinite and had been at its peak way before even Renee died in season 8. Add that death and Audreys onto his conscience, how is he even still able to function. For Jack, saving Chloe and heading to his impending torture at the hands of the russians is a beautiful outcome for him. Again his look at the end on the chopper was exceptional acting.

Well said, Klaus. As always.

The looks he gave upon hearing the news ...I know I try to do action GIFs but that look of disbelief&shock;&horror;&Fear;& and then ANGER was so fantastic ...that might be the best GIF of the bunch. That HAD to be captured.

I think for one minute ..he was pulling out his handgun to kill himself. That was the symbolism (to Me) of considering it and then deciding to live to make her death worth it by holstering it and going nuts

I think Heller is comforted by the Alzhiemers and the story was a way of saying ...he will soon forget all the pain her feels right now.

Well, I'm a mess! I can't figure out how I feel and I'm uncontrollably crying. I guess I've had too much to drink! I can not believe Audrey, I was hoping for a somewhat happier ending than usual for 24 but it wouldn't be 24 without a major death of someone who Jack cared about. Also we got the "Jack-Out" Jack and it was freaking rad! Did anyone else think the Mortal Kombat "FATALITY" when Cheng's head was sliced off? Such a great season and finale it was one fantastic day!

Thank you Ed for the fantastic parties and hopefully we can party again when the movie or season 10 comes out. There has to be a season 10....right? Right? *back to crying again* Somebody better cut my drinking off....*passes out....

Aw Sweetie! I can't stand watching you cry! Yes - Audrey...that was rough. I wish she Jack could have been there for her. But - Jack still bounced back after his Jack Out (c) and didn't slaughter the Russians too! He has a grip on himself. And this was set up PERFECTLY for Kate and Chloe to work this together. Kiefer doesn't want to do more ...but I bet we'll get a whole season of Kate being heroic while looking for Jack ...and then we get a cameo at the end!

Your crying turned me to mush!

Since Audrey said "kill him" a few eps ago, I have been waiting with bated breath to see how Jack was gonna Do Him - the fight scene between Tzi Ma and Kiefer was just excellent, made more powerful by the confined space and the raw talent of the two actors - no stunt doubles for this scene.
Cheng's bloodied face looked like a Kabuki Mask and the way he used his voice to say his name while in a headlock was masterful. finding the convenient Katana and using an excellent technique and follow-through, Jack finished the game with style.
If I never see another new series, I will live my life in sweet contemplation of 24 - the series that ended Just Right.
And a tip of the old fedora to you
edshrinker for your excellent additions to the show - you GIFted me higher

Damn man (*wipes tears) THAnK YOU! It has been a blast (and a lot of bandwidth).

I assume it was a Chinese vessel so having a Katana as a decorative wouldn't be a stretch. Jack has decapitated before - but never with such style! And to Cheng's credit - he handled his execution like a man.

I think Audrey had a smile when she "saw" how it all ended with her killer ( or the one responsible).

I agree the last 4 eps felt rushed and I think 18 eps would be PERFECT for this style of storytelling ...but this was a fantastic season of 24.

I thought it was a Russian vessel. The crew were Russian, it was organised by the T+Russians and a Chinese freighter conveniently about to leave Southampton would have been a tad suspicious if they were searching for ways Cheng could exit the country.
I like to think that it was Cheng's 'lucky' Katana handed down to him by Grandpa Cheng. He takes it everywhere with him .. not so lucky anymore!

PS. It's amazing that I'm not too late for this review ... usually I watch it days later!

Thank you! And that would make sense since he was supported by the Russians. A lucky Katana. I am good with that. Too good of a scene to quibble with coincidences.

lol '24 tomorrow' i look foward to your gifs again when the time comes Ed. But i like this 12 episode format it allows for more focused arcs and there is barely any filler (infamous Kim and mountain lion)..and the time clock still works like it did in this episode. This shortened season seems to have far less missteps then even the best seasons did.
