"12am - 1am" is a pretty cool premiere for what is arguably one of the greatest television shows of all time. But unlike many other people, I can't bring myself to give it a perfect rating just for being "the one that started it all."
The story revolves around the threat of African-American presidential candidate David Palmer being targeted for assassination. It's implied that Palmer's race is the sole motivation of the terrorists behind this nefarious plot, but 24 hours is a long time to reveal otherwise.
Meet Jack Bauer, head of the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit and the main agent assigned to investigate the assassination scheme, along with the possibility of a mole within the agency. And meet his wife Teri, his daughter Kim, and his CTU subordinate Nina Myers. All of those characters will come into play, whether you enjoy their storylines or not.
Various plot threads are woven, and there's plenty of suspense and intrigue to get the audience curious and wanting to follow through to the end. George Mason getting shot with a tranq dart is a classic scene that helped the viewers realize just what kind of guy Jack is. And the twist near the end will leave you dizzy.
Because this is the pilot, shot long before the show was picked up for regular production, the feel of this episode is a lot different (i.e. more low-budget) from the mainstream "24." The look is kinda dated, the editing is real shoddy in places, and the timer sounds cheap. However, everybody has to start somewhere, and we must all observe how far the show has come. This episode slickly accomplishes everything that a pilot should, but compared to many future episodes of "24," it is far from the greatest.

    Hourly Highlight:
    TRANQ DART!!!

  • It's only the first of the lot, and it´s excellent.

24 is the best television show!!!!! It's an incredible TV series with an incredible suspense, excellent plots and unforgettable characters. And the first episode of all is my best evidence. Because it's only the first episode, only the introduction, and you are hooked because of the plot and the continuous twists and turns.

Jack Bauer is a federal agent who is assigned the protection of the senator David Palmer. He can't trust in anybody because people of the CTU may be involved. And, when this events occurred his daughter: Kimberly escapes from house to a party...

At the end of the episode, you want to watch more, and more, and more. It's only the first of the lot, and it's excellent.

A Good Pilot, but more than thar is diffult to acomplish in a series with this format.

There will be great episodes, and giving this episode a 9 would be unfair for the next episodes.

A season means a day, every episode means a hour. This format is a little difficult to managed, but will we see how they overcome this challenge.

Jack Bauer is the Main character, a Special Agent, with a Family. Is job, which is not easy, is to discover a mole inside CTU. More than that, prevent the assassination of the Presidencial Candidate.

David Palmer seems a great character, but his story remain to be good. Its unclear what is role. Kim and Teri role still unclear too, only Jack starts with a good role, but this is normal, its only a pilot episode.
  • The first hour, The first day.

It has been a long time since I have seen this show in fact the only time I have ever seen this episode was when it first aired back in the day, so I thought it was a bout time for a 24 rewatch ad here we go. This episode is fantastic it was so very different to what TV viewrs are used too the splitscreen storytelling is unique and it moves the story on quickly. There wasnt as much action as I remember but it was awesome. Basically everything kicks off in the last few minutes. I cant wait to see the rest again. 9 out of 10.
  • First hour...

So, I have decided to pick up this serie and watch it from the beginning after I saw some episode from season 4. So, it is quite different for me of those few episodes I saw - not many familiar faces but what I most say - I do like it. The first episode of this very promising serie has somehting magical and charming. We do not have yet idea who is who, the char are introduced and the nail it from the first seconds. I just cannot take my eyes off the screen and the motion.. the excitement going on. I am now off to second episode.. and I afraid I won't be able to stop after that too..

    Really promising beginning.
  • This is a great pilot for a great TV Series that just keeps on getting better.

The Pilot for 24 was a mixture of intelligence and character development. It made you care for the main character and if you were a father you could relate to him with the whole teenage daughter thing. Bauer is introduced as a family man and he would just prove that he is more and more as the season continued to go. This episode had great character development, a great plot, great characters, and a great hero that you actually cared for. Overall I will give this episode a perfect 10 out of 10 because it had everything that it needed for an amazing pilot episode.
  • The longest day of Jack Bauer's life has only just begun!

    "Good"
Along with Lost, 24 is a very popular, well known and critically aclaimed series. And just like Lost i've only just got round to watching it... i no it's bad as its been running for almost seven series and gained countless awards, and yet all this time i've never seen a single episode. Well now i finally have! Having already found out the format of the show i kinda had an idea of what i was going to expect, but in fact i didn't. So the pilot introduces us to Jack Bauer an apparent honest federal agent who juggles his hectic job along with his hectic family, who appear to be having some problems. A clear sign of this is the daughter sneaking out of the house at night to go sleep with a guy at an empty furniture shop. (i certainly didn't expect that!) He's split with his wife Terri and has some sort of love interest with his co worker but that isn't entirely clear yet. Like other popular shows such as Lost and Prison break you no the more you watch the more you'll find out. After all it would be slightly boring to no all the answers straight away. American drama's are very good at keeping you hooked i must say. It reminded me of Prison break a great deal well the president side of things anyway. What with that and Heroes its proving to be a popular subject amongst American dramas. The general format is different and unique and i like the way the story is put across. At first i thought the constant use of split screen would become tedious yet i found it helped me have more of an understanding of what was going on, not only that, that it was all happening at the same time. After all that is the whole concept, each episode being one hour of the day. I was unsure whether the idea would work at first but now i realise it works quite effectively. Its not the strongest of pilots compared to other series but what with all the attention it receives it can only get better. Either way i want to watch more to find out what happens to Jacks daughter, what the plane crash was all about and if the company is as bent and evil as the one in Prison break! I like the lead character of Jack as he seems instantly likable and i'm sure the other characters that we only get to see breifly will come forward and become more distinct eventually. I can tell it relies on strong acting and drama to fill in the suspence and excitement but i'm also aware it is known for some good action as well. All in all i'm certainly impressed and look forward to see how the whole show will develop.

4:00 P.M.-4:02 P.M., Kuala Lumpur: Agent Victor Rovner is transmitting data over his computer, just as "they" come knocking. 12:02 A.M.-12:03 A.M., Los Angeles: Agent Richard Walsh receives a call that Senator Palmer is being targeted by terrorists, while Palmer is on the balcony of his hotel room headquarters writing his campaign speech with Patty, his manager. 12:07 A.M.-12:09 A.M.: Kimberly and her friend Janet are in Janet's car, on their way to see Janet's friends, Dan and Rick, for some action. From his car, Jack calls Nina to ask what Walsh wants. Nina doesn't know. Neither does anyone else. 12:09 A.M.-12:12 A.M., Outside the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU), Jack calls Teri to ask her to go easy on Kimberly when she gets home. Teri wants to take her to a therapist. Inside, Jack meets with Nina and Agent Tony Almeida. While waiting for Walsh, Tony worries if they screen Palmer, people will think it's because he's black, which it is. Kimberly and Janet arrive at the furniture store where Dan works. Kimberly meets Rick, her fix-up. They all have a party and trash the place. 12:12 A.M.-12:20 A.M.: Reporter Maureen Kingsley is on the news making the announcement that polls open at 7:00 A.M., and Palmer is expected to clinch the election. Walsh gets there, and tells Jack and the rest of CTU that a foreign power -- presumably a hate group -- is after Palmer, so they should do a check on all of Palmer's foreign co-workers. Walsh has a private meeting with Jack to say there may be a connection inside the agency. Jack doesn't want to point fingers at his friends, but since he's the only guy Walsh can trust, Walsh coaxes him into it. The last thing he tells Jack is that the District Director, George Mason, is on his way to brief him. And to trust no one. Meanwhile, a suspicious foreign man is on a plane bound for Los Angeles. 12:22 A.M.-12:25 A.M.: Patty receives a call from photographer Martin -- the suspicious foreign man -- who says he'll be there in an hour. He asks if he'll see Palmer at breakfast later. Patty says he will. An equally suspicious woman sitting next to him is intrigued that he's meeting Palmer. 12:25 A.M.-12:29 A.M.: Jack tells Nina that he's meeting Mason alone, but she's not happy that he's hiding the rest of the story from her. Teri calls Jack because she found drugs in Kimberly's room. Jack suggests Teri snoop in Kimberly's email, but they don't know the password. While Kimberly and Rick get to know each other better, she tells him that she's trying to get over the recent death of her father. George Mason arrives at headquarters, and explains to Jack that the terrorist is likely German and will be in L.A. today, if he isn't already. He gives Jack a clearance card that will get him in anywhere, and shares some additional info -- Palmer's no friend of the agency. But he refuses to say who gave him the card when Jack asks. 12:29 A.M.-12:34 A.M.: Mason pretends to give in to Jack's wishes to call his superior to find out whose card it was. After Jack eavesdrops on the call (to the operator), he shoots Mason with a tranquilizer dart, which he lets Nina witness. Jack confides that he suspects Mason of stealing seized money from a drug bust. He gives Nina Mason's card, and coaxes her into getting some good blackmail info before he comes to. 12:38 A.M.-12:40 A.M.: Alan York, Janet's father, calls Teri, because he found her number in Janet's rolodex. He doesn't know where she is, and suspects the two girls are together. Nina can't get the info Jack wants, as the account is encrypted. Jack thinks Tony can, and wants Nina to ask. 12:40 A.M.-12:43 A.M.: Nina asks Tony to hack the account. Tony grudgingly asks if she's still sleeping with Jack. Even though they were dirty, he resents Jack for turning in his own people. Jack gets CTU hacker Jamey to find out Kimberly's email password. It's "lifesucks," which he gives Teri over the phone. Kimberly and Rick have struck a match. But not so much as Janet and Dan, who are doing it in one of the store's beds. 12:43 A.M.-12:46 A.M.: Martin and the suspicious woman are striking up a match of their own. Palmer takes a break from his speech to spend time with his wife, Sherry. Maureen Kingsley calls Palmer for a response to an incriminating allegation she plans to air. Sherry wants to know what's up, but the concerned senator turns silent. 12:49 A.M.-12:52 A.M.: Nina worries that Jack, who should be patching things up with his family, could wind up in jail. Jack puts himself in the shoes of the so-called bad guys he ratted out. They compromised once, and now so has he. Teri calls Alan back with the contents of Kimberly's email, which reveal where the girls went. Kimberly, Janet, Dan and Rick are about to go to another party, until Kimberly sees Teri left a message. She wants to go home, so Dan says he'll drop her off. 12:52 A.M.-12:57 A.M.: Martin and the suspicious woman are making like Janet and Dan, albeit vertically, in the airplane's bathroom. After they're done, the woman introduces herself as Mandy. Jack gets his evidence against Mason, and wakes him up to say that if he doesn't reveal who tipped off the Palmer hit, he'll rat him out too. Mason reveals, then leaves. While Martin is dozing off, Mandy steals his wallet, takes out a stewardess, gets her bag, puts on a flight suit, starts a timed bomb on the plane, and blasts herself safely out the exit door seconds before the plane explodes. 12:57 A.M.-1:00 A.M.: As Teri and Alan are driving to the Valley to try to find the girls, Jack calls to find out what's up, but something kills the call before he learns much. He has to put family matters on hold again when Tony tells him a 747 just exploded over the Mojave Desert, probably due to a bomb. Jack wants Walsh and the passenger list. Kimberly freaks when Dan deliberately goes the opposite direction of her house, and refuses to tell her where he's headed. Dan is so high that he nearly crashes into another car -- Alan's. Mandy's parachute opens. Tick, tick, tick...
  • A pretty good episode! But it gets so much better. =]

    "Good"
This is the pilot episode, so it is obvious that its going to spend the majority of the time introducing the characters.

We get a glimpse of how Jack attempts to split his time equally between his family and his job. We also see how far Jack goes to do his job when he shoots George Mason with a tranquilizer.

But the best part of this episode, apart from the bombing of the plane, is when Walsh tells Jack that there may be someone inside the agency involved in the assassination threat. This mystery being revealed in the first ten minutes of the first episode prooves to me that there is going to be a lot of things going on in this show!

Quote of the hour! Richard Walsh: "Until we get a better handle on things, don't trust anyone... Not even your own people"

    "Superb"
Great pilot made me watch them all! On the day of the California Presidential Primary, between midnight and 1:00 AM, the spy Victor Rovner sends a message from Kuala Lumpur to USA. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, the Federal Agent Jack Bauer has returned to his family and is having trouble at home with his teenage daughter Kimberly, who blames her mother Teri for putting Jack out of the house. Teri and Jack decide to have a serious conversation with Kim, and they discover that the girl has run away home. While trying to solve his domestic problem, Jack is called to his Counter Terrorist Unit by his colleague Nina Myers for a meeting with their chief Richard Walsh, who discloses a menace against the life of Senator David Palmer, who is running for president, and they need to find the shooter. Later, Walsh has a private conversation with Jack and tells that there is a conspiracy in the agency against David Palmer, and assigns Jack to find the conspirators. When an airplane explodes over the Mojave Desert, Jack has one additional issue to worry about.

The first episode of "24" is a promising beginning of a successful series, introducing Jack Bauer. This is the first time that I have watched this show and I confess that I liked what I have seen: a complex and dramatic story, with multiple and realistic characters. Kiefer Sutherland is perfect in the role of a family man and a reliable agent in charge of three difficult missions at the same time: find a killer to protect an important politician; find a traitor in his agency; and find his teenage daughter, who is getting in trouble, while trying to save his marriage
  • A great pilot for the most innovative drama of all time

    "Great"
The first episode of the so far one of the best drama series, 24. The actions are happening between 12am and 1am. It is presidential primary today. CTU special agent Jack Bauer is in his house and plays chess with his daughter, Kim Bauer. They argue about her mother, Teri. Then, Kim escapes from home, and hangs out with her friend Jennet. Jack has to go to CTU, because there is an urgent meeting. Today, there is preddicted to be an attack of senator David Palmer, and Jack also finds out that there is a spy in CTU. He first checks George Mason, but he finds out that he's not the spy. Nina Myers is curios about what Jack is not talking about.
  • A strong pilot that introduces many of the conventions of our 24 world.

    8.5
    "Great"
Yes, I rewatched the pilot again, and I checked the time with my computer clock, just to be sure that Events Occur In REAL TIME (commercials notwithstanding). On first viewing of this episode, the real time concept is fascinating, and we are constantly reminded of it by the clock and split screen cuts of other characters' actions, both of which are more present here than in later episodes.

After viewing the rest of the series, however, I realized that this is the element 24 could lose and still be successful. The pilot bears this out by having so many other original and winning ideas. Here, we first see Jack Bauer: lawbreaker, Jack Bauer: I-do-what-it-takes, the three-mini-cliffhangers-one-maxi-cliffhanger-are-the-least-we-can-do concept, the sassy inter-office politicking, the if-you-want-to-shoot-someone-in-the-knee-with-a-tranquilizer-make-it-your-boss concept, and the change-at-least-two-characters'-motivations-per-episode rule. Think about it, the show would not have been the smash hit it has become if it had just been La Femme Nikita on a clock; these other conventions are where the fun's really at!
  • This Episode is amazing. The First Episode, and possibly the Best. Kiefer Sutherland shows how good an Actor he is and starts a hit new Series for Fox. The Pilot Episode is very much so what this Show got launched with.

24 is a hit Show on the Fox Network, that has brought in Millions of Fans across the Globe.

It is an Action-Packed, Drama Filled, Thrill Ride, that will keep you on the edge of your seat, or better yet, couch, and will make you want more each Week.

The Story takes place in the length of 1 Day, a Day in the Life of Jack Bauer, a Federal Agent, working for C.T.U., or the Counter Terrorist Unit.

Kiefer Sutherland Stars as Jack Bauer, who seems to have a good Life, and Family, but when his Daughter, Kim, runs away from Home, it launches his First Day of Drama Filled Action.

This, is where the Pilot begins.

For the rest, I suggest that you watch 24 Season 1 with Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer.
  • An exciting new concept that was the best idea for a show in the history of televison.

this show was started in a way that every=one who watched it had to see the rest. This show started just as fun and exciting as it would continued to be (until season six). Sure just like with any other story it needed to start with an exposition but by the end of the episode the overall feeling of the show was truly felt by all.
  • A great beginning, but it gets better from here

    8.0
    "Great"
This is it! The first episode in the greatest TV series of all time! That being said, this episode doesn't exactly give the best representation of the greatness one should expect from 24 as the season progresses. Like any good pilot, what we have here is basically an introduction to the various characters in the show, and the problems they will be dealing with as the show progresses. We meet Teri, who spends the first good chunk of the season looking for her missing daughter. We meet Kim, who goes out partying with two guys until she realizes they have no intention of taking home. We meet Presidential candidate David Palmer who gets a mysterious phone call that upsets him. And of course, we get to know Jack Bauer, who is tasked with protecting Palmer from a possible assassination attempt over the next 24 hours. And...

That’s basically it! Almost the whole episode is used to introduce the audience to the characters and plots mentioned above. Sure, there are other little tidbits throw around: it’s suggested at one point that Jack and co-worker Nina Myers have some history together that they both regret. And in one very cool scene we learn just what kind of man Jack is when he extracts information from his boss, George Mason. And everything’s presented interestingly enough. But as I’ve stated numerous times, this episode gears up the show for what’s to come in the future. Except in the last few minutes when something unexpected happens that will make your head spin. But I won’t spoil that twist for you.

    The Best: George gets tranquilized

The Worst: Kim and friends partying. BOORING.

So far, only one hour has passed in this show's plotline and already a plane has been blown up, jack daughter has been kidnapped by some strange guys and there has already been a plot twist. It looks like this is going to be an excting show and i daren't guess what is goin to happen within hte next 23 hours, i've jsut started watching the episodes on DVD and already I am hooked. I reckon this is my second favourite US drame after prison break. The reasons behind the attempt on the presedetial candidatem david palmer's life are yet to be revealed, and i'm itching to find out.

The show begins with Jack Bauer at home, and as events unravel, we got an insight as to what was to come through the season.

In my opinion i think season one was the best, and most original... and what better way to start a clasic show that with a superb episode.

Having seen the other series, this episode is a personal favourite to go back and watch.

I admire the writers for creating such a complelling first episode, and show for that matter!

12am - 1am in my opinion is one of the best episodes, even with the action feature that the show has further on.

This day is the longest day of Agent Jack Bauer's life. This is a perfect first episode to the series i loved it. From this episode you can already see that 24 is going to be a great show. Kiefer Sutherlands proformance is fantastic, and the writing for this episode was great. So we are introduced to the president, and that someone is planning to assinate him. Can Jack stop them? The Kim story also starts to develop from here. I loved this episode, i knew from this episode that it was going to be a great show and how right was i? Day 1 is great. You will never tire of the plots. 24 is great.

This episode is special to every "24" fan, in that it was the first. I remember when I first saw this episode..my eyes were transfixed and I was in an endless daze that sent me on a rollercoaster-ride of thrilling adventure. No one can deny that by way of pilots, this episode was pretty top-notch.

It's actually quite funny to look at the set during that show and see the tiny briefing rooms and cheesy costumes. A lot has changed throughout the years, characters have come and gone, but it all remains the same in the hearts of so many: This pivotal episode made the entertainment phenomenon of "24" into what it is today.

  • The worst day in federal agent Jack Bauer's life has officially begun

    9.0
    "Superb"
November 6, 2001---the day that changed my life forever. The day that changed television forever. 24 debuted on this fateful night with a compelling episode that hooked viewers across the world immediately. We were introduced to CTU Agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), an uncompromising, morally grounded, patriotic family man, and Senator David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), an uncompromising, morally grounded, patriotic family man. Oddly enough, the paths these two characters would parallel each other for the rest of the season, as Jack’s boss, Richard Walsh (Michael O’Neill), orders Jack to help contain a possible threat to Palmer’s life and discover a possible mole within CTU. Meanwhile, Jack must deal with his own personal crisis at home, as his daughter Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert) is missing, partying in the wee hours with her friend Janet (Jacqui Maxwell). Intrigue continues to build at CTU: who could be the mole? Among the leading candidates are George Mason (Xander Berkeley) from Division, who Jack shoots with a tranq gun and blackmails; Nina Myers (Sarah Clarke), an agent who Jack had an affair with; and Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), who resents Jack as an authority figure at CTU and is jealous of Jack and Nina’s prior relationship.

In addition to the expert implementation of the real-time element in this first episode, the set-up for future 24 episodes is set—a gradual, suspenseful buildup leading to a shocking ending. In this case, a seductive female terrorist named Mandy (Mia Kirshner) steals a photographer’s identification and blows up a 747 over the Mojave Desert. Right away, a complicated plot to assassinate Senator David Palmer is unleashed.

This episode was mainly designed to introduce and establish the main characters of the show (Jack, his family, CTU, Palmer), but was still able to maintain the intensity level throughout the episode and hook the viewer with a classic 24 ending.

    Overall score: 90/100 (A-)
  • Just an absolute great show! I hadn't watced any of this show until 2007 and I am hooked!

Like I said, I had missed the premiere of this show back when I was in middle school and when I got older I had heard just how good it actually was. I kept wanting to watch it but buying the seasons was not something I was quite willing to do. Well, now I am in college and as soon as the first season dvd set went on sale I picked it up and began watching. That was a week ago and now I am on the third to last episode with the third season in my room and the second season in the mail. I am absolutely hooked on this show! The real time concept is great and keeps everything feeling like there is an actual ebb and flow to the story. Plus, the thought that all of these events are occuring to Jack Bauer over the span of one day just makes you want to come back to see what possibly can go wrong next. The characters are great and well cast, and Dennis Haysbert plays a wonderful Presidential candidate. The storyline is superb and is one of the best written for a television program. The entire quality of the show just seems like a very long and well thought out film. The bottomline is that this is a WONDERFUL show and one of the best around. A must watch.

As a huge 24 fan, I am ashamed to say I did not like this episode, I don't know why, I loved the season, I loved the series, but this episode definatly could have been way better of a pilot episode. I may see this episode again to see if I change my mind on it. 24 is an amasing show show of drama action and crazy situations that could rewin the United States of America. And somehow the fate of our country ends up in the hands of 1 peson, Jack Bauer and season 1 is so far my favorite. Great show, amasing season, bad episode.

The first enstallment of 24 was pretty much what one would expect - a set up episode for things to come in future epieosde. We have to begin the long process of character devolopment and the basis behind whats going to happen on Day 1. I liked how they ran the episode, with everyone getting about an equal share of camera time to set up for future episodes. All of the storylines are fresh for the moment, though Im sure as the season progresses we will see a little more of Jack Bauer and a little less of everyone else

The Pilot episode of 24 did a great job at introducing the characters and also a really great job with keeping the story from being boring. Some characters are shown and are talked about more than others, but those who aren't seen much in this episode are are eventually shown and talked about more later in the series. Keifer Sutherland IS Jack Bauer and it is easy to see that he was the perfect choice for that role. One thing that makes this episode great is the actors and they all, not just Sutherland, did great and actually embrace their characters. If you watch this episode, you will be hooked on this series!
  • One of the greatest pilots for any series ever. Period.

That\'s right, I\'ll say it. I put this pilot up as one of the great TV pilots every, alongside The X-Files, Homicide: Life on the Street, Hill Street Blues, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as some of the absolute greatest first episodes for any television series.

Kiefer Sutherland has always been fantastic in the show, but I think season one was his finest work because as the show has worn on, it\'s been less and less about Jack juggling his personal life with his professional life. This season was a balance between Jack having to solve a crisis while also acting as a husband and a father.

I remember watching this hour for the first time and even though it was more or less common knowledge that a jet liner would blow up, I was still shocked that Mandy was the assassin on the plane when it was set up to believe that it was the photographer. A great surprise, and only the first of many in the series.

Oh yeah, and the use of split screens in the show was simply awesome. Could anyone possibly imagine how different (and awful) the show would be if there were no split screens? Imitation is always the finest form of flattery, and other shows have tried replicating the use of split screens, but none have used them to their full potential the way 24 has. 24 has been the finest show of this century thus far and the pilot hour is Exhibit A of why the show is so great.
  • Now this is a tv show.

We're introduced to the main players, the plotting are done really well. The pacing is fast, as soon as we hear the words from Jack's boss, don't trust anyone jack, we're assured this show will be action driven. and the show delivers, this real time plotting is really smart, this is before lost. it's a very fresh look at tv, this is serialized drama in its best. the tension is raised right from the beginning, we expect the action to go on really fast, each episode never bores, you just keep asking for more. this show is awesome, i can't wait for the next one.
