  • Huge twist #1

    10
    "Perfect"
Until now, the show seemed to be jumping around without following a cohesive path, mainly with Jack's storyline. The keycard and Penticoff? Ultimately kinda pointless. While those first five episodes are still interesting to watch, this sixth one is where the season gets really, really juicy. This hour starts the first big story arc for Jack; namely, following Gaines' orders. For the first-time viewer, having Gaines phone Jack kinda throws one off and raises some confusion and intrigue, and it paves the way for a few episodes of a new, internal kind of conflict for Jack.

The Palmer storyline also becomes much more interesting here, as the rumor about Keith killing Lyle Gibson turns out not to be a rumor at all. And the revelation about Sherry's involvement in the cover-up raises the tension something fierce and lays the groundwork for some great personal scenes between the two characters.

This episode also contains the show's first major plot twist that has heavy repercussions on future episodes. After the scene with Gaines contacting Jack, this twist (along with the subsequent insane murder scene) REALLY throws one off. In later seasons we would probably expect something like this, but back when S1 first aired, it was a true "WTF?!" moment.

The sun has finally risen in Los Angeles, Gaines' plan is all falling into place, and the bright morning hours of S1 are about to begin. Can you deeg eeeet?!! …I dunno what that was.

    Hourly Highlight:

    Said insane murder scene.
  • This episode had a great twist

Jack and Teri are reunited at the hospital. Jack plans to question Janet when she wakes up, but he is interrupted when Gaines contacts him and begins forcing Jack to follow his orders.

Palmer is angered when he learns that his family went to great lengths to conceal the truth from him.

Kim tries to persuade Rick to help her escape from Gaines.

Teri receives a message from Nina and discovers that she is in more danger than she realized.

This was an ok episode until the last 15 minutes kicked in, it focused on the characters like the prevous episode but then came a twist that was really unexpected.

Kim scenes with that guy continue to serve as a filler, to fill the episode. Trying to bury a guy while they talk didn't seem to be very interesting.

Jack side was better. He and Teri are together but not for long. This time, this Jack situation seems to be the best, since Gaines has his daughter and can demand anything from him. The details were very good.

We have a turnig point this time, that was unexpected, and this make a good ending, since we now learn that this is not only Jack daughter that Gaines are after.

Palmer plot continues to grow and became very interesting, when he discover that his wife's involvement.

When last episode was somehow getting to one certain level and certain point where things did not sounded too catching and we had seen all it, then this episode turns everything again upside down. First the moment when other girl's father kills her - that was like what. And when Teri gets call from Nina and we learn what is really going on - that was wow.. They really can turn something what looks quite exciting even more exciting. All the thing going on with Jack and the other person who follows him and called him and now send him to CTU.. this episode really added some new motion.
  • Jack and Terri are finally reunited at the hospital although certain things do not go as planned. "Allan" unfortunetly turns out to be an imposter and kills his so-called daughter.

Everything is slowly being revealed! Amazing episodes and I can't believe my hunch was right... I thought something was off about Jannet's "dad". A few scenes were a bit too long although of course the reason for this is quite obvious. Good thing Terry kept her cool when she found out the truth about her new best friend otherwise she would have been way too vulnerable! In general, I thought this episode in particular was better than the other ones just because things are finally started to tie in together and the plot is thickening, thus getting way more interesting to watch.

5:02 A.M.-5:04 A.M.: As Teri and Alan watch from outside the operating room, Janet's BP starts crashing. The nurses call in Dr. Collier, who has them shock her with a defibrillator, but the first attempts fail. Jack calls Teri from his car to say he'll be there soon, and warns her not to let anyone suspicious see Janet as she may be in danger. More than you know, pal! After they hang up, Jack meets Nina and has her take the body in Penticoff's car to find out who he is -- which won't be easy since they mutilated his face, pulled his teeth and amputated his fingers. Jack tells Nina about Janet and asks her to keep it secret that he's going to the hospital. A helicopter he summoned arrives and picks him up, just as Tony comes charging out demanding to find out from Nina why Jack called for one without giving a destination. She tells him off. 5:04 A.M.-5:06 A.M.: Gaines tells Kimberly this is what happens when you lie and warns Rick not to ever lie to him. He hands Rick a shovel to get rid of Dan's body. Kimberly tries to appeal to Rick by saying he'll end up just like Dan if they don't work together, but he angrily shuts her up. 5:06 A.M.-5:10 A.M.: Palmer calls Carl to the hotel, and beats the truth out of him -- that he covered up Keith's crime and altered the hospital records. After making sure Palmer really wants to know the truth, Carl admits Keith came to him to confess murdering Lyle Gibson, but claimed it was self-defense as Gibson pulled a knife on him. Palmer asks why didn't they go to the police to confess if it was only self-defense, but Carl thinks it would have ruined his career anyway -- because Gibson was white. Palmer orders Carl out of his life and out of his family's life. Before he goes, Carl twists the knife by telling the senator that Sherry was in on the cover-up. 5:14 A.M.-5:16 A.M.: Kimberly gets another shovel and helps Rick dig, against his wishes. Rick lets Kimberly know he didn't want to leave Janet there, that no one was supposed to get hurt. Kimberly doesn't want to hear Rick's whining, she only wants him to think of a way to escape. 5:16 A.M.-5:19 A.M.: Jack arrives at the hospital, where he is met by head of security Claude Davenport. Jack thanks him for locking down the hospital so only staff can get in, then is reunited with Teri. Teri lets Jack know Janet is now stable, but not talking yet. Alan introduces himself to Jack. He's relieved that Janet pulled through, but isn't sure he wants Jack to interrogate her when she comes to. Teri is angry and Alan stunned when Jack treats Alan like a suspect by questioning if he knew who Kimberly and Janet went out with. Teri pulls Jack aside to tell him Alan was with her all night, but the conversation is cut short when Jack sees Davenport fighting with a guy who is trying to barge his way into the hospital so he can see his brother. The guy angrily walks past Davenport and Jack with a suspicious briefcase, so Jack jumps him and dumps out the contents: a bunch of pills, which he says are his medication. A nurse comes by to calm down the guy about the status of his brother, letting Jack know he's clean. 5:19 A.M.-5:22 A.M.: Sherry asks Palmer what Carl wanted. When he comes out with it, she believes Carl was just feeding him a story. Palmer puts her on the spot by sternly asking why SHE was feeding HIM a story. Sherry says they hid it from him because they were protecting his career, but he thinks she was protecting her own career. Sherry says they need to do everything they can to keep the truth from coming out, but he says it's too late. She reminds him then he'll be losing a lot more than the election, and asks if he really wants to send Keith to jail. He's got no answer for her. 5:27 A.M.-5:29 A.M.: Kimberly and Rick talk about how Dan and Janet acted like they were invincible, and how they wish they could turn back the clock (well, they could in episode 2). Gaines returns and orders Kimberly to come with him and Rick to finish the job. Jack calls Nina from the hospital to find out if she's got anything on the body. There's no ID yet, but the time of death was estimated between 11:00 P.M. and midnight last night. Nina tells him they're doing tissue samples to identify it, but Jack makes her call that off as it will take more time than they have.
  • What a twist!

This is when the plot starts to get very good indeed. In my opinion, this episode and the next two episodes are amazing and they all get a 9/10.

The Palmer storyline gets interesting when it is discovered that his family have covered up the whole situation with Keith and the rapist for several years. Not just that, but the storyline involving Jack too.

The conversation in the hospital with Jack and Teri is very sad and touching and what happens from then on is really exciting!! Jack gets a phone call from Gaines :o:o that was a bit of a shocker. Gaines has total control of Jack and is demanding Jack to do things for him, and if he doesn't... Kim dies.

And then... The biggest twist of the whole season so far is revealed. Alan York is not Alan York! For a guy who seemed to be rather genuine and sympathetic with Teri it came as quite a shock indeed. And it was really disturbing when he walked up to Janet and killed her. I had to look awayyyy!

And the ending...Oh my! After this episode I decided that 24 was the best show on television.

Quote of the hour! Jack Bauer: "I'm so sorry... I know this is all happening because of me. I'm trying to keep a wall between my work and my family and the walls coming up and I don't know what to do."

this was a very nice episode. we get to see a sad part when Jack comes to the hospital and you get this really weird tingly feeling inside. wait, what? thats not Janet's Father? ah crap. its one of those terrorists. anyway i think the whole thing of Jack being told what to do is kinda cool and i think it would be very cool what happens in the next few episodes. so now that Mrs. Bauer knows that the man is not York what will happen to her. i think this brought a good thing of balance to the scene.
  • BIG twist

    9.0
    "Superb"
This hour can be credited with the first major, throw-the-audience-on-their-head, twist in 24. It could also be credited as completely awesome. During the first two-thirds of the hours, Jack, Teri, Kim, and Rick do a whole lot of nothing, meaning that the majority of excitement for over half the episode belongs to Palmer. Last hour we learned that Keith covered up his accidental killing of Lyle Gibson, and the plot only thickens here when it is revealed just how many people knew about the cover-up. Without giving too much away, let’s just say the time when the Palmer family talked happily with one another is over. The revelations in this episode steer the future of their family in a whole new direction.

Back at CTU, Nina, Jamey, and newcomer Milo spend the episode either decrypting the key card or trying to figure out whose body was in the trunk of the car. Unfortunately, the identity of the body is discovered too late to warn Jack and prevent a murder. Who gets murdered by whom? Well, that’s the aforementioned big shocker. But before this shocking “murder”, something else unexpected happens to Jack. He receives a phone call from Gaines, and is given specific instructions to follow if he wants to save Kim’s life. This, and then the “murder” will defiantly shock and confuse the viewers. Like the Palmers this hour, the Bauer family is taking in a new direction this hour as a result of shocking revelations.

The Best: Jack’s answers Gaines’ phone call.

The Worst: Kim and Rick whining.

In this episode of 24 which takes place on day 1 between 5AM–6AM Jack meets his wife Teri and Alan York at the hospital where Janet York is when Jack gets their he want to ask Janet York some questions but can’t when he gets a phone call from Gaines the mastermind behind the days events mean while Kim wants Rick to help her escape from Gaines mean while David Palmer is not happy when he learns of a secret that his wife and kids have been keeping from him for years Teri Bauer gets a message from Nina Myers that she is in danger over all a good hour this is a basic from point a to point b story hour the Teri and Alan story is the best part about the episode when Teri finds Alan’s secret my over all rating is 9.7 out of 10 THE END.
  • Alan York is NOT Alan York!!!

    9.6
    "Superb"
The first thoroughly JAWDROPPING, STUNNING, UNBELIEVABLE, INCREDIBLE twist in the history of 24, and that execution of it was purely brilliant.

Jack is finally reunited with Teri at the hospital, and tells a distraught Teri that Kim was kidnapped because of Jack’s job. In a truly heartbreaking moment, Jack opens up and tells her that he tried to separate his family matters from his job, but he failed. But soon, Jack gets a nefarious phone call from none other than the slick Ira Gaines, who threatens to kill his daughter if Jack does not obey his orders. Jack slowly steps away from a confused Teri and leaves the hospital, with Gaines completely in control of his actions.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Janet’s father, Alan York, enters Janet’s room to check up on her. However, as the scene quickly unfolds, it becomes apparent that Alan is indeed involved in the entire Palmer conspiracy as he kills his daughter to prevent her from revealing any information that might lead to Gaines.

    Oh, but wait, THERE’S MORE!

Alan tells Teri that Janet told him where Kim was and offers to take her there, while Teri, confused as ever after Jack’s sudden departure, agrees to go with him. Then, the brilliant episode ends with a BRILLIANT conclusion, as Nina, unable to contact Jack, calls Teri and informs her that the corpse Jack found in the previous episode belongs to a man named….ALAN YORK!

In conclusion, this episode and its shocking last acts was what officially transformed my interest into 24 into an addiction. Waiting for the next episode (which was weeks away when it aired) seemed to be an eternity, as the show continued to evolve from simply great television to the best television I have ever seen, to that point.

Finnaly in this episode we have severeal major plot twists that will turn the season in a certain direction. Jack has now been in contact with the person who has his daughter and he has left his wife at the hospital to go and try to find out whats up with her daughter. I found it interesting that he is going back to CTU, I wonder why Gaines wants him to go there.

The other major plot twist being the fact that Alan York really isnt the Alan York that we thought he was. He was hired to kill Janet and he has done that. I think his interactions with Teri should be entertaining in the next few episodes.

Jack reaches the hospital to meet Teri, but he gets a call from Gaines asking him to do what he asks. At this point, just as you thought everything will be good for Jack, it turns out that he has no control of the things happening around him. This is what's great with the show, the clever plotting of each episode keeps you on your toes. In this episode, David Palmer is dealing with his own personal issues about his family. This part of the show is also very interesting, David Palmer is a good character, it's got a very interesting background that makes the show really watchable.

He burst in to the presidents office, pulls out a knife, on one of the staff. I love the show, but I think it's gone a little to far.

when jack pulled the knife on cummings in the presidents office I thought that the show had reached a new level ( if you know what I mean), a unserious one unfortunately. The president (logan) does nothing about it, braindead as he is, he probably wondered what he would have for lunch after the knife drama.

anyway 24 is still my number 1 show, and i'm shure it will get back on track. A show must have their up's and down's.

    keep it up 24...
  • The episode that made 24 appointment TV for me. Episode summary included in review.

    10
    "Perfect"
I remember when 24 first came on amidst all the hype. At first, I didn't necessarily think it deserved a lot of the praise it received, but was still a worthwhile episode. However, after this episode, 24 became appointment television, a status it still holds today. It is a vital episode to the entire series. Lies are exposed, characters are torn away from each other and things wind up in a place where we're dying for more.

In some ways, this episode is the first of a trilogy. Culminating at the breakfast, you can tell this episode is the start of something big. In this episode, we learn that Sherry has a dark ambitious side, Jack loses all control and one character's dark side is revealed. The next episode complicates these developments and the third episode pays off this mini arc.

As the doctors frantically save a flat lining Janet, Jack calls to tell Teri that he'll be there soon. Until he does, Teri is to make sure no one comes near Janet because her life may be in danger. Teri's confused and scared as to why Janet is a target. Unfortunately, Jack can't say why. This only sends Teri's day further out of control. Unlike Jack, she doesn't know how to deal with situations like this. Of course, this uncomfortable mix of work and home life is a major part of this season.

Jack pulls into CTU and shows Nina the body he recovered in the last episode. Forensics hasn't yet arrived. Their assignment's tough since all of the identifying parts have been removed or badly mutilated. Jack leaves in a chopper to get to the hospital. He want Nina not to mention that he acquired it for personal use. All his favors have been accumulating. In only a few hours, she has put her job on the line because Jack asked her. We're leading towards a place where he'll ask for too much.

Once Jack is airborne, Tony demands to know what is happening, but Nina doesn't give him any answers. Despite all of Jack's broken protocols, she's still supporting him and willing to risk everything. She defensively tells him to back off. Things have been tense between them all night. Although Nina is dating Tony, Jack still plays a major role in her life and that doesn't sit well with Tony.

Rick sits over Dan's body, grief stricken. Gaines comes with a shovel, ordering him to bury Dan. Because of his fear, Rick now answers to a far tougher authority than his friend did. A man who doesn't care about anyone who knew someone he killed, looks down upon him and will likely kill him when the job is over. Kim realizes this, but she can't convince Rick to actively try to escape.

Following the meeting with Maureen and his son, Palmer contacts Carl for the truth. Palmer won't take any more lies, so the crafty aide admits that he did help Keith hide the Gibson death. Although he covered it up, he believed Keith when he told him that it was in self-defense. Palmer is disgusted and claims that he would've gone to the police. However, Carl believes such an action would've prevented him from even running for president. This is enough for Palmer, who orders Carl out of his life.

Before he steps out of the room, Carl drops a major bombshell. Not only did Keith and Carl keep this a secret, but so did Sherry! With this revelation, the doting wife we saw Sherry as died and the manipulative icon we grew to love was born. Palmer initially doesn't believe Carl, but when he reveals that she was the one to contact Carl for help, Palmer knows he's telling the truth. The one person Palmer believed he could trust has been lying to him for years.

Gaines and his entourage are extremely courteous mercenaries. When they kidnapped Kim, they allowed her to roam around free and help Rick bury Dan. Perhaps they had good results with free-range hostages. Anyway, Kim picks up a shovel and digs Dan's grave while Rick takes a break to smoke weed and bask in self pity. He still has a lot of work to do emotionally. Although he apologizes for what has happened, it doesn't change that it did happen. Kim sees that he needs to face this, but Rick doesn't yet.

At the hospital, Jack arrives and hugs Teri. Though it has only been five hours since they've seen each other, their lives have changed significantly since then. All of the frustration Teri had was forgotten in that moment. However, it quickly came back when Jack met "Alan" and began questioning him, accusing him of negligence as a father (even though Jack and Teri don't know much about their kid's life either.) "Alan" had been a good support for her during this difficult time and Jack's suspicion appalled him. However, we now know that Jack didn't push him enough.

Elsewhere, Palmer confronts Sherry when she gets out of the shower. He learns that even Nicole kept this a secret from the police and him. Palmer knew that Sherry was ambitious, but never to the extent that he finds out this day. Sherry even says that their marriage was based on ambition, not love as he believed. Despite this disagreement, she explains that she didn't want to send her son to prison, but her desire to be first lady is still prominent. Now, Palmer is still hesitant about what he needs to do.

This sneaky move was a good for the show. Initially, many may dismiss the original Sherry Palmer as someone the writers threw in without an idea of what her purpose would be on the show. This appears to be anything but true and the result was a phenomenon. Having Sherry and David's philosophies play off each other was great too see.

Last episode featured Teri telling "Alan" about her problems with her daughter. This week we see Kim's side, and both women are in similar mindsets. Despite all their problems they've had, this situation has made them want nothing more than to be together. Like "Alan" to Teri, Rick has been supportive to Kim during this ordeal. Only "Alan" was pretending to be unaware of the escalating circumstances, whereas Rick passively let it happen. Regardless, she still believes that Rick wants to escape as badly as she does.

Gaines interrupts the digging and demands that Kim come with him. He doesn't say why, but he advises that she "leave the shovel unless [she] plans on using it on [him]." Defiantly, she jams the shovel into the ground. Of course, she will be used to blackmail Jack to do Gaines' bidding. Looking at this episode again, we can theorize that "Alan" provided Gaines with his opportunity to take control by alerting him to Jack's pressence. Though having all these pieces fall in place where their plan can't waver an inch is hard to believe, it makes the writing more complex.

Jack calls about the body, who is still unknown. In the next room, Teri apologizes to "Alan" about Jack's behavior. He shrugs it off, but deep down he's thinking that he hopes that Jack doesn't find out his secret. That questioning earlier could've blown their operation.

With everything happening, including Jack attacking a MacGuffin, he couldn't keep the truth from Teri any longer. He takes her to a private area and tells her about Palmer and that this threat is connected to Kim's disappearance. Jack believes that she's gone because someone knows Jack is assigned to protect him. Of course, there is more to it than this, but this summary is a good set up for what we'll learn later.

It's a great scene because it is a rare instance where Jack shows uncertainty and fear. Usually Jack is in control and keeps his emotions to himself, but this situation is too much for him. All he's done to keep his family away from his work hasn't been enough for him. For a powerful man like Jack to be powerless is his weakness. At the end of the episode, Jack loses all control as Gaines exerts his will over him.

Nina takes Jamey off the keycard, which will be handed to Milo, an outside contractor brought in to help. Nina claims that she is needed to help identify who the John Doe is, but it sounds weird that she would assign a data analyst for a forensics case, it works. They find a special orthopedic device that can be traced to the surgeon who implanted it. Such a discovery will let them find out whom it belonged to by the end of the episode, providing a great surprise.

Because everyone in his family covered up Gibson's death, Palmer can only confide in Mike Novick, his Chief of Staff. Unfortunately, his outlook isn't good. The story will be saturated in the media and the spin will destroy his career and family. However, if he deals with this properly, he can salvage his shot at the White House. That entails coming forward before the media does, and having his family by his side. In only a few hours, he needs to reconcile this sudden betrayal at least enough for the media.

Janet is expected to make a full recovery, the doctor tells them, so Jack asks the doctor if he could ask her a few questions about where Kim is. Of course, with Jack so close to the truth, he must be untimely ripped from it. Before he gets to see her, he gets a phone call. He thinks it's Nina; it's Gaines. Now things are getting really interesting. Using Kim, he gets Jack to get away from Teri, leaving her confused as to what is happening yet again.

If that wasn't enough of a satisfying development, we're taken upstairs to ICU where "Alan" is about to see "his daughter". He manages to convince the nurse to allow him to see her alone. He enters the poorly lit room to find a groggy Janet. At first, he appears sympathetic, until we hear Janet mumble some revealing words: "Who are you? Where's my father?" Jaws drop, profanities are shouted. "Alan" caresses her face and proceeds to calmly suffocate her. It's more cold-blooded and fitting this way. This is business to him.

Meanwhile, Jack follows Gaines' instructions, leading him to the parking lot and a planted car. In the car is an earpiece that Jack will now use to receive instructions from Gaines. His next instruction: drive to CTU. Speculation certainly can run crazy as to what Gaines wants Jack to do at CTU. His high ranking offers many opportunities for Gaines to exploit. Whatever Palmer's would be assassins want, Jack plays a role in their plan.

After Kim is used to coerce Jack to obey Gaines' instructions, she's taken back to see Rick start burying his friend. Before he drops the first load of dirt, he apologizes for what has happened. Spending this hour has given him plenty of time to think about what his inaction has cost him. Kim tries to ease Rick's worries by telling him that her father is coming.

"Alan" manages to get Teri out of the hospital on the lie that Janet told him where Kim was. Her calls to Jack have gone unanswered due to him disposing of his phone at Gaines' demand. Nina can't reach Jack either, so she calls Teri with the John Doe's identity. Alone in the car with him, Teri discovers that the real Alan York is dead and an unknown man has been with her all along. This vital twist is a great topper for a great episode.

Man, this was good stuff. The shocking development that Alan York isn't who he claimed he was provided a great standard for shocking twists yet to come in the show. Also, this episode was the first glimpse of Sherry Palmer as we know her. It may be slower paced than previous episodes, but it allows more time for character and story development and this episode had plenty. When the clock ticks 6, you need to see what happens next, which is what you want out of 24.
  • Revelations found out, main characters turn bad, and Jack is no longer in control...

    "Great"
Episode six of 24, and unsurprisingly, Senator Palmer is beginning to have problems with his wife. Running for election of course is never easy, and i'd imagine one of the hardest things to do during such a process is keeping your family safe and happy.

After the huge allegation made by Marie Kingsley about Palmer son Keith in a previous episode, tensions have been running high in the Palmer hotel suite socially. In this episode things only get worse with new revelations and it's not long before David thinks less of his wife as he did previously.

While these scenes of argument and disagreement are well directed, rather unfortunately they slow down the pace from the previous episode. The same could also be said about Teri's hospital scenes pre Jack entrance. They feel filler more than anything else, and when the clock's ticking fast, that's the last thing you need.

Something positive did emerge from the Palmer scenes however, and that was the character of Mike Novick. Novick has long been a favourite of mine since, and his scenes did manage to make Palmer's own storyline slightly more bearable, perhaps even going as far as saving it.

Thankfully the episode did pick up near the end. While waiting in the hospital Jack is contacted by season-baddie Gaines, and told to obey his wishes. Seeing Jack being controlled was something of an unexpected shock, and definately out of personality for Mr Bauer. It of course moved the main plot forward in leaps and bounds, as did the truth about "Alan Yorke", truly some of the best scenes in 24 history.

Bear with it, the episode starts off slow but without a doubt gets faster and more interesting as the hour progresses. And with shocks like the ones in this episode, is without a doubt pivotal...
  • "His name is Alan York."

    9.3
    "Superb"
One of the things that makes 24 so great are its unpredictable plot twists. This episode's plot twists was one of the all-time greats of 24 and left you with a serious WTF? moment afterwards.

    Highlights

-An actual interesting Palmer episode with great scenes between him and Sherry

    -Jack's suspicion of Alan York

-Gaines contacting Jack in the clinic

-Alan's scene with Janet in her room (WTF?)

-Nina's call to Teri in the end (Double WTF?)

What made this so great was that every single scene was riveting (well, except for Kim's, but hey...she showed some sweaty cleavage, so that made up for it I guess). Palmer's story had been lacking so far this season until this hot episode where some family conflict starts between him and Sherry. Jack's suspicion of Alan York paid off for viewers at the end of the episode. Alan's scene with his daughter showed you just how awesome these writers are. But then the final scene where Nina calls Teri saying those emphasis words shows you that these writers are god-like. Fantastic episode.
