  • Full of bad holes, unrealistic, stupid even.

    "Abysmal"
I watched the first episode and was impressed. The second and third were pretty good. The fourth and fifth began to strain credibility. And the sixth and seventh (this) were pretty stupid.

    1) All CIA etc HQ\'s are screened to prevent any transmissions; this includes cellphones, wireless modems, and certainly tiny little earpieces.

The abilities of the bad guys to view everything (with position-moving cameras!) is laughably stupid. The lack of organisational control is more suited to a boy scout troop than a top government agency.

All in all, a real disappointment. It can only get worse from here. What a stink.

This was the best episode in this season so far, because the build up from the previous episode.

Every plot here plays a important role.

Lets start with Jack. Gaines is using him, and now jack is doing things tha t will have some serious consequences this time. All the scenes with him, was very interesting. Mainly when he is forced to kill Nina, one of the best moments.

Teri tenta escapar do allan impostor, e até consegue faze-lo bem, mas depois quando chama CTU, é revelado afinal quem é o impostor dentro da CTU. Uma optima forma de revelar algo a audiência.

Kim and Rick tried to escape, and they could have escaped, but her mother's timimg to be capture suited when she tried to flee.

Palmer plot this time is more slower and calm, since maybe he will be murdered, but since this plot is unfinished, this may be impossible.

    Tony is gaining momentum.

Overral, all the scenes have their importance, with everyone making their move, we have more surprise and suspenseful moments, which make this episode one of the best in this season.
  • Jack under control

Oh.. I cannot say it was easy to watch this episode and saw how Jack was used and how he had to handle everything knowing probably where it will leave. I was so sure after the shots on Nina that he really killed it but later.. at least we have no sorted out who is on whose side. It is not Tony but Jamey and.. now they have Teri too and Kim has not gotten out.

I think this episode really lowered it all to the family and Jack under control - it really makes thing very impossible. I am eager to see how he finds way out.
  • The MOLE…for real

    7.0
    "Good"
Again, Jack finds himself inside CTU, but things are way more interesting than the last couple times he was there, in that he's secretly following Gaines' orders to sabotage the investigation. But along with Jack being a makeshift CTU mole, the actual mole that Richard Walsh discussed in the pilot is revealed here, and plays a large role in bringing Teri to Gaines' compound.

Despite all that, this episode does seem like filler, since some of the characters spend their time doing things that either turn out to be useless or could be done in a matter of minutes. Kim especially, since she and Rick look for an opportunity to escape, and when Teri arrives at the compound, they stupidly decide to stay. I think Steven Hyde could put it best: "Dumbest. Babies. Ever." I didn't have as much of a problem with this kind of storytelling formula in "4am - 5am" because that episode still retained a lot of mystery.

While Palmer tries to get Keith and Nicole to accompany him to the upcoming breakfast conference, Nina steadily finds out what Jack's up to, and he must forcefully take her to an isolated outdoors area and kill her. That's what Gaines think he did, anyway

I think this episode's main purpose is to gear things up for the next episode, where things continue to unravel and come to a head.

6:02 A.M.-6:05 A.M.: Jonathan dyes his hair black and puts in color contacts. Now he's Martin. He gets dressed and is told by Gaines to beat traffic as he's seeing Palmer in an hour. Gaines makes Jack retrieve a keycard he left for him under his visor. Nina inquires if Milo's gotten anything off their keycard. He says he's found a scrambled medical file, which probably means the shooter is trying to hide his identity -- or someone else's. 6:05 A.M.-6:08 A.M.: While Keith is jogging, Palmer follows him and gets out to talk to him, against the wishes of Agent Pierce. Palmer explains if he doesn't tell, Kingsley will. Palmer wants him to go to the dinner, but Keith is too angry at his father to go. Keith says he always put his career first, breaks down in tears and then runs away from Palmer. Kimberly persuades Rick to run away with her, but he thinks it's a lost cause. He also thinks Gaines will let him go now that he's buried Dan. Kimberly doesn't believe that and thinks Gaines will kill him now that Rick has exhausted his usefulness. 6:08 A.M.-6:13 A.M.: Jack arrives back at CTU. Gaines wants him to replace the keycard he left for him with the one Milo is working on. Nina sees him and tries to find out what's going on. He says Kimberly's been found and was just at a party. She says the murder victim has been identified as Alan York. Once he's away from Nina, Jack angrily asks Gaines who's with Teri then. Gaines fires a gun over the phone, saying that's the last sound Teri and Kimberly will hear unless Jack calms himself down. Jack doesn't know how to go about replacing the keycard without attracting attention. Gaines calls Kevin (that's the Alan York impersonator) to say that Teri knows he's not Alan York and he needs to be careful. His cell phone is out of range, so Gaines has to leave a message. Teri tells Kevin she's feeling sick and begs him to pull over and stop the car. He does, and she runs behind a bush to throw up. Kevin decides to check his messages while she's away, but the one from Gaines has broken up to the point it's unintelligible. Kevin pulls the keys out of the ignition and decides to go check on Teri. She takes him by surprise, bashes his head in with a rock until he's unconscious and takes the keys. 6:17 A.M.-6:19 A.M.: Teri ties Kevin, who's still unconscious, to a tree. She tries to use his cell phone to call for help, but it's still out of the range of service. Rick tells Gaines that Dan is buried and requests his money. Gaines doesn't want to pay him now and he doesn't want Rick to leave either as he's got more things for him to do. 6:19 A.M.-6:21 A.M.: Gaines tells Jack he has three minutes to make the switch. Jack attempts to write a note for his co-workers telling them he's bugged, but Gaines sees it and makes him shred it. The CTU security cameras have been intercepted, as well. Nina catches up with Jack to say Milo's about to pull a name off the card. Nina is confused when Jack requests that she make Milo stop working on the card until he gets there and talks to him personally. 6:21 A.M.-6:24 A.M.: Palmer talks with Nicole. Sherry told her what's going on. He asks her to go to the breakfast. She'll be there. He preps her that there's going to be questions about the rape, and if she doesn't want to answer them, she can just say 'no comment.' Jack goes to see Milo, who says he was waiting for him to get there. Jack yells at Milo for halting work, then knocks something over. When Milo goes to pick it up off the floor, Jack makes the switch, then orders him back to work. Milo is angry. 6:29 A.M.-6:31 A.M.: Milo realizes something is wrong when he resumes work on the card. Jamey comes over to see what's wrong with it. She thinks the sectors aren't linked. He scoffs at her but checks it anyway. That's what it is. Teri attempts to flag down a passing car. Kevin regains consciousness and warns her not to, as Kimberly will be dead if he doesn't deliver her to Gaines in half an hour. Teri threatens to bash Kevin with a rock again if he doesn't tell her where Kimberly is. She tries to get a signal on the phone, which he also warns against. 6:31 A.M.-6:37 A.M.: Gaines has Jack call in to get priority clearance to Palmer's breakfast, then has him call Division and post himself out for an hour so he can attend it. Rick returns to the shed to tell Kimberly she was right -- Gaines isn't letting him go yet. Kimberly talks him into running away with her. Rick shows her an escape route, but one of Gaines' thugs interrupts. Rick makes it looks like he's trying to rape Kimberly, so he can get a few minutes alone with her to finish the job. Milo continues to have problems with the key card. Now Nina comes over to see what's wrong. Milo knows it's not the same card. When Nina questions who could have switched it, they both realize who. Nina goes to see Jack to inquire about the card. Gaines warns him to be careful, so after playing dumb, Jack tells Nina that Division got some info that they didn't trust Milo with. Nina still wants the key card, so, facing pressure from Gaines, Jack has no choice but to draw his gun and take her hostage. He apologizes, puts a jacket on her and escorts her to the exit with the gun hidden under the jacket. Before they make it out, Tony intervenes to ask where they're going. Jack says Division called them to a meeting. Outside, Jack forces Nina into his car and makes her drive. 6:42 A.M.-6:43 A.M.: Teri finally gets a signal on the phone. She calls Jack, but since Gaines made him leave his phone behind in St. Mark's garage, the only answer she gets is from a doctor who sees it lying on the ground. When he explains how he got the phone, he says he can call the cops if she wants, but she doesn't want that. She hangs up and calls CTU. Jamey answers and says that Jack just left with Nina. Teri explains the situation with Kimberly and Kevin. Since she won't let Jamey call the police either, Jamey gets her to give her location so she can send someone from CTU to come pick her up, then writes the address down on a pad.
  • My favourite episode in the first half of the season.

This episode is amazing, there is just so much that happens in this episode!

Gaines continues to put pressure on Jack and he forces him to go to CTU where he has to replace the keycard with another keycard. The conversation with Jack and Gaines in this scene is a classic and I loved how Jack attempted to warn CTU by writing something down on paper but was forced to put it in the shredder by Gaines.

And there is also a lot of focus on Milo in this episode which is a good thing as hes one of the coolest characters.

It gets even more amazing when Nina confronts Jack, and Gaines forces him to kill her. The flak jacket idea was really great and I must admit I didn't see that one coming at the time.

And then another shock arises when Teri phones Jamey to tell her shes in trouble. Only the bad guys come to kidnap Teri and it turns out Jamey was the reason behind it - shes the mole! What an amazing way to reveal the moles identity... I'd almost forgot about the whole mole situation too.

Quote of the hour! Jack Bauer: "If you hurt my wife or my daughter I will kill you you son of a *****

    "Superb"
The two big twists from last episode (Teri knows the man is not Alan; Gaines calls Jack) are exploited greatly in this hour, and the suspense doesn’t let up. The story progresses particularly fast this episode, with a few reveals and substantial developments along the way.

From the beginning of this hour and all through until the end, Jack finds himself under the control of Gaines, desperately trying to send a message that he is compromised. Further confirmation of a mole in CTU is confirmed when Gaines watches Jack through CTU’s own surveillance. Gaines orders range from requesting clearance to Palmer’s breakfast, to switching the key card with a fake, and finally to kill Nina when she realized Jack is acting strangely. The entire sequence, from Jack in CTU, to Jack shooting Nina, is very well played out and exciting. And speaking of moles, the REAL mole is finally revealed this hour, although I wouldn’t dare say who .

Teri’s attempt to escape from Kevin backfires, and she too ends up as Gaines captive. Which leads me to my only real gripe with this episode: Kim’s failed escape. Blatant filler, made even more apparent when she could have escaped, but decided to stay when she sees her mother.

After two excellent episodes, Palmer’s story slows way down here, mostly reduced to various members of the family arguing with one another. But that doesn’t make it bad. It’s actually quite interesting drama. But its slower, not that that is a bad thing, with everything going on at CTU. In the end, This episode’s real purpose is to provide a set-up for the following hour, during which every character’s story crosses with one another. But even an episode which exists for the sole benefit of the subsequent one can still be a great episode if it is well made, as this one is.

    The Best: Jack shoots Nina

    The Worst: Kim’s failed escape

  • Gaines controls Jack, Nina gets caught in a messy situation, Teri gets kidnapped, and the mole at CTU is finally revealed...

    9.8
    "Superb"
The most unpredictable season of 24 continues with yet another shocker, but the episode as a whole may be one of the most memorable in the show’s history as well. This episode was executed close to absolute perfection, as the actors, directors, camera crew, and writers were all on the top of their game.

In this episode, Jack is completely controlled by the sinister Ira Gaines, who orders him to go to CTU and to retrieve a keycard that has information on who the CTU mole is. Jack does as he’s told and, in a hilarious sequence, steals and replaces the keycard by not-so-subtly knocking over CTU contractor Milo Pressman’s peanuts. But soon, Milo realizes that the keycard he’s working on is different and that Jack switched them. Nina heads up to Jack’s office to confront him, and Jack has no choice but to pull a gun on Nina, but cleverly covers her in Kevlar. Gaines orders Jack to take Nina out of CTU and to an isolated location to shoot her, which he does, but Nina survives because of the Kevlar.

Meanwhile, Teri realizes that she’s being kidnapped and knocks fake Alan York out with a rock. Unable to contact Jack, Teri calls CTU for help, and Jamey promises to send a team out to recover Teri. But as the CTU agents converge on Teri and release fake Alan York, it becomes apparent that these aren’t CTU agents---they’re Gaines’s henchmen. And it also becomes apparent that Jamey Farrell, the only person at CTU that Walsh told Jack to trust, was the CTU mole, the second shocking twist in as many episodes. Genius, pure genius.

Overall, this was the most entertaining and exciting hour of Season 1 to date. Every aspect of the show was executed with flawlessness, making it one hell of an episode.

    Overall score: 98/100 (A+)

    "Great"
This episode was good, with Jack Bauer fully under control of Gaines who is forcing him to follow his every command. CTU is finnaly out of the picture as the only lead they really have has been taken by Jack. The scene at the end between Jack and Nina was really well shot. I liked how Jack "faked" Ninas death. The one part I didnt think was well written was Kim and Ricks pathetic break out attempt. Not only did they both manage to escape all the way to the gate undetected, but then they got all the way back without notice too. What about the guy Rick was talking to? He didnt notice that Rick was gone for more then 2 minutes to get his keys?

    Still a pretty solid episode

Gaines get Jack Bauer to do favors for him. Gaines asks him to sabotaged operations taking place at CTU so his assassination attempt on David Palmer will go as planned. Jack Bauer has no choice but to do as he asks so he wouldn't kill his daughter. Kim Bauer is trying to find a way to get out of the secret camp. She struggles to persuade Eli to help her in getting out of here. This is another great episode, it's really watchable. We get to learn that some characters aren't so bad, just misguided, and seeing the characters play out is really fun.
  • Some major revelations and developments. Episode summary in review.

    9.0
    "Superb"
The second part of this "trilogy" adds on to the complications brought up from the last episode. Jack's compromised position threatens one of CTU's own. We finally discover who has been compromising CTU regarding this investigation. While the ending may be considered a cop out, the show as a whole is better for it.

As the sun rises, the shot segues to Jonathan, the gunman who will in a few hours attempt to kill Palmer. There is a great visual flair in this episode. The transition to the gunman is cool and the use of split screens creates an impressive effect. With Belkin's picture in the mirror, he carefully makes sure he has every detail down to the green contacts. It's creepy, and a good way to remind us that the threat on Palmer is very real and close to coming into fruition.

Jonathan tells Gaines that he's leaving while Gaines still watches Jack. Gaines has left a keycard in the car for Jack to use when he gets back to work. This card is identical to the one that Milo is currently decrypting. Although Jack isn't told yet, he must know that Gaines plans to swap them. His mole in the agency has let him know that they've found this piece of valuable information. They are too close, but Gaines won't tell him that. He has enough power that he doesn't have to say why.

Following his meeting with Novick, Palmer rushes out to convince his family to stand by him as he comes forward with the story. The first person this request concerns the most is Keith. Palmer disregards Pierce's request to stay in his limo and runs towards his jogging son. His appeal is turned down because Keith only sees this move as political; something he believes his father has always made his top priority. Palmer is a paradox. While he is a man of integrity, his career has made it difficult to remain strong with his family and now he's frantically trying to make up for lost time.

On the compound, Rick cleans off after burying Dan. One could nit-pick about how it only took him five minutes to move all that dirt, but would we really want to see another hour of burial? Kim's in the midst of Stockholm Syndrome, although Rick is the least evil of the people at this compound. Despite Gaines' dismissive and condescending attitude, Rick still thinks that he'll honor his promise to let Rick go. Rick still lives afraid to assert himself. Kim, about as close to an impartial observer, knows that Gaines won't allow him to leave.

Jack arrives at CTU, where he awkwardly dismisses Kim's situation to Nina. She then informs him that the body in the trunk was Alan York's. He quickly returns to his office to curse Gaines out. However, a simple gunshot quickly reminds Jack of the power Gaines has over him if he doesn't obey his orders. Gaines tells him to replace the keycard they're analyzing with the one in the car.

Gaines takes a moment to inform Kevin, the man impersonating Alan York, that Teri knows he's fake. Kevin doesn't know it because his phone has poor signal. While driving with Kevin, Teri demands that they pull over because she feels whoozy. Although it had only been a few minutes, the fact that she was with this man obviously put her in a state of shock. However, like her husband, she must've been crafting some plan to deal with this development. Of course it isn't as sophisticated as anything Jack can do, but it works for the character. Alone in the car, he finds the message and can gather enough to know what's going on. He investigates and Teri hits him with a rock. Before Teri knocks him out, Kevin throws the keys into a bush far away. With Kevin knocked out and secured to a tree, Teri tries to call Jack, but is unable to get a signal.

Kim proves herself right when Gaines denies Rick's request to be paid and leave. Gaines manipulates Rick by turning around Rick's feelings of being "in the way". He claims to have some other jobs for him to do before he can go, but it's a bogus story. The only way he'll leave is like Dan. Rick doesn't resist, though, but this provokes him to take Kim's advice since Gaines won't.

As Nina comes up to inform Jack of Milo's progress on the card, Jack tries to tip her to Gaines' control. To his horror, Jack discovers that Gaines is watching him at CTU as well. Obviously the work of the mole, who we later learn is Jamey, but more on that later. Jack disposes of the evidence just before Nina enters. Milo is about to find out who the shooter is. However, Jack orders that they stop the decrypting until he gets down there.

Meanwhile, David consults Nicole about Keith. Unfortunately, she thought this ordeal was over years ago. To relive that again may be too much for her to deal with. However, Palmer proves to be a strong supportive father by advising her not to answer any questions she doesn't feel comfortable with or diverting those asking to him for an answer. Unlike her brother, she trusts her father's support. Since the scandal revolves around Keith, they don't need the additional conflict between her and her father.

An obviously frustrated Milo complains to Jack about having to stop decrypting the card. Jack dismisses it as a communication failure, which only makes Milo madder. Then he spills Milo's cup of crackers, using the diversion to switch the keycards. Milo doesn't even know it until a few minutes later, when the machine reads the card quicker than it should have and refuses to comply to the orders he gave the first card.

Kevin has woken up and warns Teri that if she isn't taken to Gaines' compound, then Kimberly will die. Like many people caught in this situation, Teri doesn't know how to proceed. She seriously doubts that she will be unharmed, but to have her daughter in danger too adds a lot to the equation. She still tries to call Jack, despite Kevin advising that it won't do much good.

Rick finally agrees to work with Kim on an escape plan. Before Rick can go into detail, another thug named Eli barges in. Kim quickly makes it look like Rick is raping her and Eli gives him a few minutes to finish. Obviously this is a bad sign of Eli's character, but it allows Rick and Kim a few minutes to devise their plan. When Rick leaves, Eli commends Rick for his brazen effort that could've gotten him killed, then goes to rape her himself. However, Rick finally shows some spine and gets Eli away so Kim can escape. On their way to load some trucks, Rick pretends he lost his keys and rushes back to Kim.

Gaines forces Jack to get clearance into the breakfast only a half-hour before it happens. Nina comes in and confronts Jack about the keycard that they know is a fake. Jack admits to switching them out, but lies about why. When Nina threatens to call division, Jack pulls a gun on her, something that throws Gaines off guard. He quickly escorts her out of the building, explaining to Tony that they're heading to a division meeting.

As soon as Teri gets service, she tries Jack's phone again, but is scared to hear someone from the hospital pick up. Frantically, she dials CTU, where Jamey picks up. Teri details her ordeal, and Jamey offers to send some agents to get her. Unfortunately for her, these people are Gaines' men, who get Kevin lose and take her back into their custody. Meanwhile, Jamey crosses out and disposes of the note she took during the phone call.

I like how they underplayed this moment. We finally learn who the mole is and instead of a dramatic reveal like her suddenly killing someone, she's just quickly threw away some information. It made sense for her to be the dirty agent. While there was a lot of suspicion drawn upon Tony, it was far more because he disagreed with Jack. Jamey was the least suspicious, plus her changing hairstyles, initially a nit-pick for fans, can be explained away as her alibi for when she contacted Gaines and his men.

Palmer has one person left to persuade, and that's Sherry. She's not budging. Rather, she offers an alternative: blackmail Kingsley into keeping the story quiet. She wants her son to avoid jail and her husband to be president, but knowing that he added to the cover up is too much for Palmer's conscience. Palmer wants this to be revealed since it will be eventually and a clean conscience means a lot to him.

Jack and Nina continue driving. An upset Nina questions whether anything Jack has said to her since midnight has been true. She must be going crazy thinking about what is really going on. Her emotions almost get them killed when she fails to notice the car in front of her has stopped at a red light. They proceed to a deserted industrial area, where Gaines then instructs Jack to shoot Nina. She can't believe what is happening, and demands that Jack shoot her to her face, which he does. They confirm what they believe is a dead body and move on.

Although this twist is negated in a few minutes, it is still a major development. Jack shot his strongest ally in a mock execution. She lived, but part of him looked like he wasn't sure it worked or at least the impact of shooting her took a lot out of him. However, he needed to project this image. He tricked the man who has the lives of his family in his hands.

Kim and Rick manage to dig a whole under an area of fence. When Kim squeezes under, she hears her mom scream. She can't leave her there, and Rick stays too, having missed the window to escape. Though some may criticize this decision, I can see how it works. She doesn't want to leave her mother alone there. Rick however, needed to step up and go. He's still a coward.

Tony asks Jamey about the meeting Jack and Nina told him about, but Jamey says that she hasn't heard of any meeting. Nina hasn't called either, which adds to Tony's anxiety. He investigates himself by getting the surveillance footage. There he sees Jack accost Nina, but is baffled as to why he gave her a flack jacket. We see that Nina, while groggy, is still alive. The jacket stopped the bullets. Now she is alone in the middle of nowhere, confused as to what is happening.

It is a second part, but by the end you know something is big is coming. We already saw some big things. Jamey's mole reveal is interestingly low key, but its implications are huge. While some parts may have been less than stellar, it makes up for it with Jack's story.
  • Nothing says Season 1 like this episode.

    "Great"
6am-7am continued 24's hot streak in the first half of Season 1. It featured more clever thinking by Jack, Teri's surprising badassness, and a couple more of those WTF? moments.

    Highlights

-Jack putting the flak jacket on Nina

-Gaines's manipulation of Jack in CTU, classic lines

    -Teri knocking out Kevin Carroll

    -WTF? moment with Jamey

-The shock of the ending and then the subsequent relief when we figure out what really happened. Of course...it's not really that relieving when you go back and watch this one on DVD if you know what I mean...

Really though, other than perhaps the finale or Palmer's breakfast, no other episode screams out that it's from Season 1 like this one. All of my highlights are things that make this show great and not just this episode itself.
