True, this episode doesn't advance the plot much. But it's so freakin' good. It's the first of two episodes directed by guest Davis Guggenheim, and these two episodes have a certain edge to them that other directors haven't really matched.
Jack drives around the city avoiding cops left and right, being a suspect in Palmer's attempted murder and all. Not much develops regarding this storyline, but somehow, it's still damn gripping.
Teri and Kim call CTU as Nina tries to get a trace on their location, but it's all for naught. Filler if I've ever seen it. Awesome anyway? Yes!
Palmer's arc juices up as Carl Webb returns and drops a little hint that Ferragamo's life might be in danger thanks to him. Astounding? Dare I say it—YES!
We get an introduction to the next Bigbad when Gaines receives a call from his boss, Andre Drazen. Disappointing to see that Gaines isn't really on top of things at all? Sure. Compelling as all hell? YYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!
Er—kay, the only thing keeping this episode at a 9 rating is the entrance of Alberta Green. A crappy character, but thankfully, she appears relatively late. So it's still awesome!
We also get the first mention of some overseas mission that Jack participated in. This comes in some supposedly meaningless, filler dialogue between Teri and Kim to explain why Teri and Jack separated, but you'll see in later episodes that there's more to that little conversation. For now, though, let's concentrate on this episode, and on how ******* kickass it is.

    Hourly Highlight:
Not to mention…Jack racing Ted Cofell to the parking garage and hijacking his limo? With some of the coolest music I've ever heard on this show? CHECKMATE!!!!!

  • Jack evades the police while trying to get out of town to find his family. Gaines receives an ultimatum. Sherry really starts to piss people off. (David and viewing audience)

24 is a hard show to review without giving too much away. I may not do such a good job of that, so be warned. I don't know why "filler" gets applied to this episode. I have to disagree with such an assessment as a lot of important things happen in this installment. Another villain is revealed, a new boss comes in to take control of CTU, Jack is running/hiding from the police while trying to talk to Teri, and Sherry really starts to make me mad in this episode. She goes behind David's back and sets things in motion without his knowledge, but it makes the Palmer storyline very interesting. Sherry Palmer's character really begins to be clearly defined. Gaines receives an ultimatum from a new villain, Andrea (Andre?) Drazen. He is apparently the real guy behind everything. Alberta Green shows up at CTU to take charge. This complicates Nina and Tony's assistance of Jack, as everyone who matters thinks Jack is out to kill Palmer.

This was a filler episode, with little importance in overral.

I don't know as the writers were able from the teri phone call, spend so much time of this episode. It was incredible like Jack was hidden under the car to avoid the cops, and even so he was able to speak on the phone, he have some interesting abilitys.

Palmer situation seems repetive, because there is not another business to discuss right now.

In CTU, nothing really happens, besides that new character that was introduced, and it seems that Nina has her own plot.

A new Player or Villain appeared, and now this can be interesting.

Other than that, this episode offers very few decent moments. Just a transitional episode at best.

This episode was little bit slower than previous ones. The start was good - all the thing with Jamey and back in CTU where Nina is now in control... but those things are not long - to learn that Jamey is dead and then that someone who does not look too playing by their rules takes over... and then ofcourse the thing with Terry and the phone... they have little idea where she is but still..

The all thing with Palmer was quite not interesting... and then Jack running around and trying to catch that man... plus ending.. that was little confusing but I am sure we will find out soon.

9:02 A.M.-9:09 A.M.: Two paramedics give Jamey an IV, announce that it doesn't look good, and haul her out of CTU on a stretcher. Nina explains the situation

to the rest of the staff, before ordering them to resume work. She gets Tony to call Jamey's mother to have her pick up Kyle. Jack rings Nina from inside

the car to let her know that it's in his possession. He's stunned to hear that Teri had gotten through to CTU earlier, such as it were. He also needs help

with directions, as the police have set up roadblocks around the entire area. She recommends he turn himself in, but he refuses, knowing full well Gaines

won't keep Teri and Kimberly alive if he's in custody and, thus, of no use. Nina goes to work on tracking the roadblocks for him, then fills him in on

what happened to Jamey after he mentions her. Things take a turn for the worse -- literally -- when the street Jack is on leads him straight into a surprise

roadblock. He makes a hasty U-turn, then berates Nina for failing to catch it. She tries to find him an alternate route. Teri prepares to call Nina again,

with Kimberly standing by the door as a lookout. Nina still has Jack on the line, so when the phone rings, she asks Tony to answer it. She puts Jack on

hold and takes it when Tony says who called. Teri has no idea where she is, so Nina asks her to leave the line open long enough for them to set up a trace.

Nina gets back on the other line with Jack to tell him, but just as she patches Teri through at his request, Kimberly signals that they're coming, and

Teri has to hide the phone before Jack can talk to her. After sticking it atop a wooden beam, Eli and Rick enter. With the line open, Jack and Nina can

hear every word of Eli threatening the women over the whereabouts of his phone. Nina mutes their end of the call, so she and Jack can talk to each other.

Eli tears the shed apart in a fit of rage, but can't find the phone. While he's otherwise preoccupied, Kimberly motions to Rick where Teri put it. Rick

proves his trustworthiness by pretending not to know where it is when asked. Milo has started the trace. He has a latitude, but not a longitude. 9:09 A.M.-9:13

A.M.: It's on the news that Palmer is going through with today's schedule as planned, which includes an appearance at an elementary school. From the backseat

of their limo, the Palmers have yet another argument over Maureen Kingsley. Mike is with them, and sides with the senator. Once in front of the school,

they exit the limo, and are greeted by a screaming crowd of children and adults. Nina tells Jack they have a preliminary trace, but it's a pretty big area.

She gives the broad location, then helps him circumnavigate the cops. Tony calls Nina over, after having sifting through Jamey's email. Jamey deleted all

her messages but one, sent this morning to a Ted Cofell. It's encrypted, so Tony plans to work on that. But Nina needs him to find out who Cofell is, so

Tony pawns the decryption job off on Milo -- who now has to do things at once (but, surprisingly, doesn't demand another raise). Tony's phone rings, he

answers, and is saddened over the conversation. He goes over to tell Nina that was the clinic. Jamey didn't make it. 9:18 A.M.-9:27 A.M.: Eli and Rick

have departed. Kimberly keeps watch by the door and signals to Teri again -- this time because the coast is clear. Teri redials CTU. Nina answers, and

puts her through to Jack. Jack finally gets to talk to her, and says he's on his way and the others are tracing her location. Teri asks how long that will

take. Milo says twenty minutes. That's a time frame that isn't comforting to Teri. Jack has to cut Teri off, as two cops have found him, and are ordering

him to pull over. He pulls over, waits until they get out and walk over to his car, then speeds away. The two cops race back to their vehicle to follow

Jack in hot pursuit, as Teri, Nina and Milo all listen to what's going on. A mad chase follows, during which Jack hides out in a parking lot, gets out

of his car, and ducks under somebody else's car. The cops scout the parking lot as backup arrives. One of the officers walks right past the car Jack is

under, but doesn't see him. Teri interrupts to ask if he's alright. Now that he has a free minute to talk, he tries to get more details about her location.

She offers up a few minor things, and Nina puts Milo to work on factoring them into the trace. Jack promises he'll find Teri soon, and stresses how important

it is that she doesn't hang up the phone until the trace is complete. After Teri says that Kimberly is there, he asks that she put her on the phone so

Jack can reaffirm his love for her too. The cops begin to close in on Jack, just as Teri fearfully says that she has to get off the phone because the kidnappers

are coming back. Jack turns a nervous wreck reminding her to keep the line open. She does and hides the phone atop the beam like before, but this time,

Eli is angrier and more violent than ever, knocking Teri to the ground and throwing Kimberly into a wall in search of the phone. Rick attempts to stop

him from hurting the ladies, and he's about to punch Rick's face in when the phone starts beeping. Jack freaks out; neither he nor Nina know why it's beeping.

They figure it out when Nina notices the trace signal dying. It's too late anyway -- Eli has followed the sound of the beeping and uncovered Teri's hiding

place. The phone back in his possession, Eli asks who they called. When he doesn't get an answer, he goes to the source, and asks Jack who they called.

Jack decides to make the situation ten times worse for everybody by threatening to kill Eli if he hurts his family. Eli pushes past Rick, on his way to

tell Gaines what they did. Rick tries unsuccessfully to talk him out of it by reminding him Gaines isn't going to be happy when he finds out whose phone

they used to call for help. As Rick and Eli are in the middle of another violent struggle, his phone drops to the ground, and Teri grabs it to get in a

few last words with Jack. Eli snatches it away from her, and hangs it up. He and Rick leave. Jack hopes and pleads that they got the trace. But they didn't.

9:32 A.M.-9:36 A.M.: The cops locate Jack's deserted vehicle. Jack is across the parking lot breaking into someone else's run-down vehicle. After hotwiring

it, he drives off the lot without being seen, then calls Nina to check on how close a trace Milo managed to get. She says within a 25-mile radius. He needs

more help -- like Jamey -- and is crushed to hear his star witness died. Tony picks up; together, he and Nina give Jack Cofell's name and address. Gaines

is sitting at his computer, trying to send another message to Jamey. He gets a call from an associate, Mr. Drazen, who's on a Lear jet bound for Los Angeles.

Drazen would like to know why Palmer is still up and about. An uncharacteristically passive Gaines tries to talk Drazen out of voiding a certain contract

This episode is basically a filler. Jack spends the first half of the episode trying to avoid the cops while CTU attempt to trace a phone call from Teri which is needs up being unsuccessful.

The conversation between Jack and Teri on the phone was great. It made me laugh how Jack managed to avoid being caught by the cops while he was under a car talking to her on the phone.

The phone call was Jacks only hope of finding Teri and Kim considering he has no leads now Jamey has died. However, Tony finds an e-mail from Ted Cofell in her account.

The second half of the episode revolves around Jack tracing down this man. And even though it was predictable, the ending was a classic. xD

Quote of the hour! Andre Drazen: "If Plan A doesn't work you should have a Plan B, not Plan A recycled."
  • Filled with...filler

    9.0
    "Superb"
What can I say about this episode? It's basically filler. During the first half of the episode, CTU attempts to trace Teri and Kim's location through the stolen cell phone, while Jack drives around L.A evading cops left and right. As I said before, both of these events are essentially filler, but they are also somehow compelling. Seeing Jack in action is always fun to watch, and although the cell-phone trace fails, that sequence leads to more than one suspenseful scene. As far as actual plot developments go, this episode serves to introduce us to a few new characters. The first is the shady Mr. Drazen, who is apparently the one who hired Gaines' mercenary group to take out Palmer. Then we meet Ted Cofell, whose name was found in Jamey's e-mail, and is Jack's only connection to Gaines. And lastly we meet Alberta Green, the new boss of CTU, and who happens to be a very crappy character. It seems like the only reason she was put into the show was because things would be too easy for Nina and Tony if she wasn't there. Why couldn't they just bring back the great George Mason now and never introduce Alberta? Who knows.

The Best: The last scene. Classic 24, complete with awesome music.

The Worst: Teri tells Kim what happened to their marriage. I realize that this conversation foreshadows later events in the Season, but that doesn't mean it can't be boring as hell.

Not bad. Not bad at all. Even though this episode serves as a set-up to the following three hours in which all hell breaks loose, it still remains a rather memorable one. Nina and Tony begin to feel the heat at CTU as their new boss, Alberta Green, arrives. And this makes me wonder---why would anyone want to work in Division if they have to deal with people like Alberta Green and George Mason???

Jack doesn’t get very far in this episode, as the police continues to hunt him down after the Pandemonium at the Power Plant two hours ago. However, he gets a new lead and begins to track down a businessman named Ted Cofell. The sequence in which he races Cofell to his limousine is brilliant, especially the conclusion, as Cofell steps in his limo and we see that the chauffeur is none other than Jack with his trademark Aviator sunglasses, all against the backdrop of some truly amazing music from Sean Callery. Other scenes of note: Teri gets her first and only kill! Overall score: 92/100 (A-)

I thought this episode was a downgrade from some of the other episodes of 24 that we have seen. Everything kind of got knocked back into second gear with most of the episode being about seeing if Teri could get a call traced through CTU. I thought the conversations between Jack and his family were great, but other then that this episode primarily served as a filler type of episode. I found it interesting that appprently Gaines is working for another man, who he called Drazen. This scandle apprently goes higher then just some random name Gaines, itll be interesting to see what roll this new guy plays next episode when he is scheduled to land.
  • An awesome episode.

It's another great 24 episode. Teri uses a cell phone from one of the bad guys, she calls CTU, but her signal dies out before it could be traingulated. Nina and Tony helps Jack in secret after they get a new CTU director. Jack finds a name from a key card that can lead him to Gaines. This episode is so fast paced, it's really exciting, it's another great episode from 24. The writers come up with really cool storylines that can keep the action and the suspense going week after week. This episode have a lot of suspense that can keep you guessing, it's great.
  • The mystery has a few more layers to it, as Jack gets the upper hand. Episode summary in review.

    "Superb"
After the first payoff, 24 is quickly heading towards the next stage of its story. We learn a bit more about the conspiracy surrounding the day's events, or to be specific, hints and allusions about what this day is about. Things get darker too, as Palmer sees that the people who want to keep this story quiet will go an amoral route to do it. We say goodbye to Jamey Farrell this week, one of the recurring character deaths that would become a 24 trademark. And seeing Jack getting a break amidst an hour of letdowns increases the anticipation for the next episode.

One common complaint about the opening moments is the anticlimactic resolution to the last episode's cliffhanger. The writers brought that upon themselves. Nina and Tony couldn't answer the phone, nor could Gaines wait for three minutes to hear an answer. Although they could've done more about Gaines suspecting something was wrong as his contact isn't responding. It would've worked well dramatically, to have this cool, powerful man losing his power through the episode as another man is preparing to get his back.

The paramedics work trying to stabilize Jamey while Tony and Nina watch helplessly. Some nitpicked about how she was able to get medical attention within two minutes. Later in the series, they would incorporate an operational medical station to alleviate those qualms. Jamey is wheeled out in the least discreet manner through the center aisle of CTU. Nina informs them of what just happened, but reminds them of the job they have to do. It's effective since no one questions what lead to this.

Jack, maneuvering his way around the police barricades, calls for help getting out from the perimeter of cops looking for him. Meanwhile, Teri gets an opportunity to call up CTU, and is put on line simultaneously. However, before she can talk to Jack, Eli barges in. He's looking for the cell phone Teri took during the rape. Jack and Nina's side of the conversation is muted as Eli calls the women bad names (further fueling Jack's fire). Rick helps Eli by swiping his hands over a small piece of ground, keeping quiet when he sees the phone on a beam. With the line still open, Milo performs a trace.

Some aspects of this episode needed to be addressed quickly to set up the action. Lawrence Hertzog managed to explain it with the radio newscasters's voiceover, explaining what had just happened with Palmer and later describing his visit to the school. In their limo, Mike, Palmer and Sherry argue about Keith's story. While Palmer was preparing himself to deal with the story, Sherry's scheming convinced him to break the story. Despite the heated argument, when they exit the limo they project an image implying that nothing is wrong.

At CTU, the leads drop rapidly. Teri's trace is too vague and will take a half-hour to yield anything. Jamey's out and she erased many of her e-mails. Fortunately, Tony discovers a lead among Jamey's e-mails. The e-mail is decrypted, but they find a name, Ted Cofell, as the subject. It'll be their only usable lead. The clinic calls and informs Tony that Jamey died. Clearly, it affected Tony, who was hoping that somehow she could redeem herself and bring down these men.

When the coast is clear, Teri provides some information about their location, which helps them narrow their search. However, CTU, Teri and Kim are provided a scary few minutes as the police pull over Jack. This stop leads to a high-speed chase, while everyone else helplessly hears the engines blaring and the sirens shrieking over the phone line.

Jack is able to find a full parking lot, where he stoops around cars evading the police. This scene is potent considering that it is sunny and the parking lot is an open lot. Jack crawls under a car, where he finally gets to speak to Teri and Kim. The affect of knowing that he could be spotted adds to the emotional charge of this scene. However, Eli bursts in again, cutting this exchange short. He knows that the girls know where the phone is and now Jack and CTU listen as a scuffle breaks out between them.

Suddenly, Eli's phone starts beeping. He finds it on the beam, where Jack most awesomely tells him he's going to play "Which testicle do you want removed first?" Knowing who's on the phone, Eli furiously hangs up. Eli storms out of the barnyard of doom, where Rick convinces him that telling Gaines would be a bad idea because Eli would be in trouble for allowing her access to his phone. Afterwards, Jack asks to find out if they were able to get anything, but alas, they weren't. Halfway through the show, all their leads except for one seemingly minor one are gone. So this one would have to be a major development.

Jack manages to break into a beat up car and drive out of the parking lot undetected. Nina informs him of Jamey's suicide. Desperate, Jack begs her to give him anything. Luckily, Tony has some information about Ted Cofell, including that he's an investment banker working out of Burbank. This implies correctly that Cofell is the money man behind this attack. Jack heads over, advising Tony to keep Gaines unaware of Jamey's passing.

That order feels more to segue to the following scene, as Gaines tries to contact Jamey. Before he can get a response, he gets a phone call. The caller, who isn't afraid to call Gaines Ira or comment that he may be a poor leader, strikes fear into the otherwise cool mercenary. The caller is Mr. Drazen. Drazen is targeting both Palmer and Jack, so missing the opportunity to get them when they were in the same room is unacceptable. He and his brother are heading to LA to oversee the project. Gaines tries to assure Drazen that what happened was bad luck, but Drazen isn't entirely convinced. He threatens to void the pay Gaines stands to make, with the possibility of killing him if things became even worse.

Since he was first seen, Gaines had always been seen as the top man, always collected, even when his subordinates disappointed him. This time, he's panicked and visibly nervous talking to Drazen. Gaines is a professional; going after Palmer and Jack were business only. However, Drazen and his brother have a vendetta against these men. It had been hinted at in the previous hour that these Palmer and Jack were connected. This episode confirms that they are connected through the Drazens, but how is left a mystery.

Sherry, knowing what her husband plans on doing, calls Carl for help. He is sitting with a few business men, one of whom is smoking. This is an obvious sign that they're evil. Sherry advises that they try to convince Maureen to ditch the story, but Carl calmly tells her that he's taking car of Keith's predicament and that's all she needs to know. Since this alarms Sherry, you know the implication is bad.

Nina gives Jack some more information about Cofell, including that he may be the one who made the wire transfer Brigit demanded earlier. After he learns some basic information, Jack calls Cofell's office, only to learn that he is leaving for a flight at the end of the hour, obviously to crank up the urgency Jack has of getting to the only lead they have left.

Since Nina and Tony have been helping Jack too easily, that had to be stopped. Because of Jack's actions, a replacement named Alberta Green is being sent over. She worked with and apparently clashed with Nina when they worked together at division. Why they needed her instead of

While they are waiting for anything, Kim asks Teri why her dad moved out. Teri explains that a few years ago Jack went away on what she assumes was a mission. When he returned, he wasn't the same. Showing this explanation means that this is important with the various developments. Whatever made Jack distant and angry must involve the Drazens and Palmer.

Alberta Green arrives at CTU. This woman is focused on apprehending Jack, making Nina and Tony's assistance much more difficult. Alberta Green struck me as not much more as a substitute for Mason. I believe that Xander Berkeley must've been busy and they wrote her in to fulfill that type of role until he was available. However, there are moments where this works, as when Alberta talks to Nina in private about whether she knows about Jack's location. Both are women in considerable power, but Nina doesn't take the bait.

As Palmer talks to some kids at the photo op at the school, Mike gets an important phone call. It is from Frank Ames, one of the evil white men in the evil white men room earlier. He informs him that the other evil white men are planning to get rid of the problem by silencing Keith's therapist George Ferragamo permanently. Instead of doing anything to stop it, Ames is walking away from Palmer's campaign entirely. Although Palmer should've gone forward with this information right away, he gets Mike to get Carl.

Jack bursts into Cofell's office just as the financier is leaving for his flight. The elevator closes before Jack can get in, so he has no other choice but to descend the stairs furiously and aggressively while Cofell's elevator calmly goes down. The music is 24's best, thrilling and driving as Jack frantically follows the only lead he has. Setting off a fire alarm buys him some time (but doesn't create the need for an evacuation). Jack manages to get to the garage before Cofell, and somehow takes the place of Cofell's driver, either by ordering him or knocking him out.

Back at the farmhouse of doom, Teri suddenly winces, grabbing her stomach in pain. Many speculated what this was from, either her rape or a possible pregnancy. I don't think this cliffhanger holds up as well as if it ended with Jack poised for some payback. I'm surprised little was done in Kim and Teri's storyline this week after the first few acts. Kim could've confronted Rick on his cowardice, which could've gotten her killed and did allow her mother to be raped.

Otherwise, this was some good 24; suspenseful, action-packed and revealing. Jack gets to be as audacious as we love him being. After what he and his family has been through, it's time for some payback. Sweeping aside all the other leads helps add to the importance of Cofell. By the end of the episode we can't wait to see what that importance is and what Jack will do now that he has someone connected in his control.
  • Another heart-stopping episode

As exciting as this episode was, the best part of it was probably its awesome music. Sean Callery did an exceptional job with his track at the end of the episode, Up and Down Stairs. If you've seen this episode or own the 24 Music CD, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

    Highlights

-Eli searching for the cell phone in the loft

    -Jack's words to Eli

    -Great editing

    -Great music

-Jack tearing away from the police

-Jack hiding underneath cars, managing to evade the police while dealing with Teri and Kim at the same time

-Jack racing down the stairs to beat Cofell

-Jack with the shades on at the end

On my Season 1 DVD pack, the end of this episode (the best part of it), is incredibly glitchy and jumpy. So so disappointing that it's like that, but I still do remember watching this episode when it originally aired on Fox.

These types of episodes are always great on this show. They take a relatively straightforward plot and crank the suspense and excitement into overdrive. Like Palmer Breakfast, this episode will have you biting your nails and peeing on yourself, it's just that damn suspenseful.
