While the episode DID air commercial free, its running time of 51:43 shows that it was not in realtime as the opening suggested.
Paula: I didn't know how you liked intel presented impromptu, whether you sorta liked it chronologically or with an alphabetical key. Or just separate folders with access tabs?
Tony: (overwhelmed) Uhm...I don't really care...
Paula: It doesn't matter, I did it both ways, so you can choose.
Mason: That was great, Almeida. Now what?
Tony: Back off, George. I did the best I could.
Mason: I guess your best isn't very good then, is it?
Palmer: What do you want to do tonight?
Keith: I don't know, get a movie?
Palmer: You came out all this way to watch a video?
Palmer: If a bomb goes off today it will hurt us, but it will destroy you.
Tony: We can get to Kim. We can get her out of the city. We can keep her safe. I promise you. The best thing you can do for her is help find that bomb.
Jack: I trusted everybody here at CTU to protect my wife, and I lost her. Tony, I'm not gonna lose my daughter. I'm sorry
Mason: Jack, look at you. You look like a bum off the street, you're not talking to me, I just confiscated a witness outside of my authority, based on your call. Are you going to tell me what you are doing?
Jack: (flatly) No.
Jack: That's the problem with people like you, George. You want results, but you never want to get your hands dirty. I'd start rolling up your sleeves.
Palmer: Today is going to be a very long day.
Mason: I know this isn't very pleasant, but this is our job. This is what we do.
Palmer: Jack, you saved my life. I trust you as much as I trust anyone and now I need you help.
Palmer: What I am saying is not meant to be a threat, but simply a statement of fact. If a bomb goes off on US soil today, I will have no choice but retaliate with immediate and decisive force against your government.
Palmer: What's this about, Eric?
Rayburn: We have a 'domestic terrorist' alert.
Palmer: How serious?
Mason: Tell ya what, Tony. If I'm still working here this time next year, take me out to the woodshed and shoot me. I should be in DC by now, not chasing little old ladies who make metal detectors go off because they're carrying sewing needles.
Tony: How about the morning of the 15th?
Mason: That'll work.
Jack: I'm gonna need a hacksaw.
When we see President Palmer fishing with son Keith at Lake Oswego, Oregon, with the Cascade Mountains close by. Lake Oswego is just south of Portland and about an hour's drive from the mountains.
The DVD release states that this season takes place 18 months after the first (which took place on Tuesday, March 2nd of a Presidential voting year, likely 2004), making this roughly September. This day is also said to be a Saturday.
Carlos Bernard (Tony), Sarah Wynter (Kate) and Xander Berkeley (Mason) are added to the main cast while Leslie Hope (Teri) and Sarah Clarke (Nina) are taken out.
The six scenes deleted in the short version were again shown when the episode aired commercial-free on the FX "24 Hours of 24" marathon on Labor Day, 2003. The entire episode is also available on the Season 2 DVD
According to an interview with Reiko Aylesworth, her character and Paula Shaeffer were going to be one character. The production decided to split them after they realized that someone had to die in the CTU explosion later on. Reiko also stated that she had originally auditioned for the role of Nina Myers, as well as that of Kate Warner, before landing her role as Michelle Dessler.
This was one of two episodes Fox circulated among Emmy voters.
Fox executives predicted that the "Hacksaw" line would be removed from the final cut. It obviously stayed, and became one of the series' most memorable quotes.
Originally aired without commercial interruption, courtesy sponsorship by Ford. The episode ran 51:43 with the rest of the hour filled by two extended-length Ford commercials and FOX promos for John Doe and next week's episode of 24. Though it was rebroadcast on both FOX and FX on November 4, the FX airing was also commercial free and, excepting the end credits and pre-credit bumpers, as originally presented on FOX. FOX's rerun was a shorter version with commercial breaks and a running time of 43:56. Please note that the recap follows the long version. Also note that even that version was cut down from what was originally filmed, as evidenced by the number of guest stars credited in TV Guide that don't actually appear.
