1:00 P.M.-1:08 P.M.: Los Angeles, CA: A van is seen speeding through the streets of LA. Two men sit in the front seats, while a man in the back is seen preparing what appears to be a bomb. When they arrive at their destination, they attach the bomb to a window on the LA Health Unit, and detonate it. They quickly dispose of a body and take off.
Meanwhile, Jack and his new partner, Chase Edmunds, enter a L.A. prison to meet with druglord Ramon Salazar, a man Jack has spent the past year trying to put away for good in jail, due to his drug dealings and terrorist ties. Salazar's attorney hands Salazar the papers to sign for a deal in exchange of the names involved in the terror cells. Salazar talks to Jack, knowing full-well he is watching through a double-sided mirror. Suddenly, after signing, Salazar kills his attorney by stabbing him in the neck with the pen, and proclaims "What happens next is on you!" to Jack. Jack seems slightly dumbfounded.
1:08 P.M.-1:12 P.M.: As several workers in quarantine suits take a body away, Dr. Sunny Macer is told her name was found on the body. She calls CTU, and contacts Tony Almeida about what she knows pertaining to the victim, that seemingly is a message from someone that they have a deadly virus.
1:12 P.M.-1:16 P.M.: Jack reviews the tape of Salazar killing his attorney, trying to decipher why he chose to kill on this day. He contacts Tony about Salazar, and Tony informs him about a possible virus infection, but doesn't have much more to tell him, until it's confirmed. At the University of Southern California, a limo pulls up in the long driveway, with lots of press awaiting the arrival. The door is opened, and President David Palmer steps out. He survived the assassination attempt on him three years earlier. This is his first visit to LA since that event, and is visiting for a debate on his re-election campaign. The press ask several questions, before the new chief of staff, his brother, Wayne, whisks him away and he states there will be a Q&A later on.
1:16 P.M.-1:23 P.M.: Jack and Chase quickly leave the prison, as Jack tries to process what Salazar did and what his intentions are, and they leave for CTU. In the car, Chase questions Jack again about how he is. Jack says he's fine, then tells Chase about what Tony said. Soonafter, Jack's secretary, Chloe, contacts Jack with an incoming call from Kate Warner. She patches him through, and they talk, seemingly for the first time in months. She said his leather jacket is still with her, and he says he'll get it somehow. He hangs up, and Chase talks to Jack a bit about Kate. Apparently, they haven't seen each other in a while, but Jack is reluctant to divulge very much information. Jack begins sweating a bit, signaling more is wrong than what is apparent.
Tony gives Michelle instructions, then Tony gets a call requesting confirmation that he's interested in a new job. He doesn't want to say yes, unless Michelle can get a job, too. She gets Kim Bauer, who has been working at CTU, to do a global Capability Search. Kim does so, however when she requests help from Adam.
In Las Nieves, Mexico, a two men are talking about a horse being ready. The younger man gets a call, saying the body has been placed. He questions of they have gotten the message, then orders the man on the other end of the phone to make the call in ten minutes, when they should know what they're dealing with.
1:23 P.M.-1:30 P.M.: Adam is assigned to find the ID of the body that was found, with the help of Kim, but when Kim tries to help, he refuses her help completely and rudely. She asks why he is so ignorant to her, to which he replies that she only got her job there, because of her dad, while everyone else rightfully earned their jobs at CTU. In the middle of his work, Kim locks up Adam's computer. He demands she unlock it, and allows her to help him.
Jack and Chase return to CTU, and Chloe gives Jack most of what he needs. Jack seems a little edgy, and when he's alone in his office, he begins to sweat a lot more, and seems to be in pain. He pulls himself together when Michelle calls, and tells him to come down to see the conference room. He declines, and asks just to have it patched through to the office.
Kim enters a computer room, and is then followed by a mysterious man, who turns out to be just Chase, when the two engage in a passionate embrace. They talk about work, and she asks if he was there when Salazar created that incident. Then, Chase decides he's going to tell Jack about his involvement with her, most preferably sooner rather than later.
At the teleconference, Dr. Macer informs CTU more about the virus infected body that was found. She says it will kill its host within 24 hours. By one week, it will have infected 9% of the Los Angeles population.
1:30 P.M.-1:33 P.M.: Kyle Singer is seen in his room with a bag of powder, which appears to be cocaine. He seems ready to open it, when his mom hurriedly comes in wanting him to drive her to the doctor's later. He asks why his aunt can't drive her. She reluctantly allows the aunt to drive her later, and as she exits, he quickly hides his book bag containing the drugs.
Meanwhile, Palmer is working on a dry-run for the upcoming debate later in the day. Wayne interjects, making suggestions on how he could answer more proactively, rather than defensively. They pause the practice run, while Palmer's doctor, Dr. Anne Packard, performs a test on David's arm and hand that was infected with the mysterious chemical Mandy used in her assassination attempt when he shook hands with her. He seems to be doing fine, and ready for a re-election.
Wayne approaches, giving his brother all the details about the infected body, and what it could do to the LA population within days.
1:33 P.M.-1:44 P.M.: Jack searches for transcripts on Salazar, but can't find them, and it turns out that Chloe left them in a different place, while he wanted them with the rest of the Salazar transcripts. He didn't make it clear to her, but he won't take that, and readies himself to fire her. Chase walks in, and changes Jack's mind on replacing Chloe, saying he's only on edge because of what happened. He tells Jack that he "looks like hell" and Jack snaps again, although Chase only wanted to help. Jack apologizes to Chloe, then they're informed more has been obtained about Salazar.
Jack and Chase get downstairs, and they all ready themselves to hear an anonymous phone call that was sent to the FBI. The mysterious voice, which used a scrambler to mask their voice and make tracing difficult, informs them that they have in their possession a Type-3 Immuno Virus, ready to set loose within LA. Unless Salazar is released from prison immediately, they will unleash the virus. Jack believes it is Salazar's brother, Hector.
Back to the ranch, Hector is seen with girlfriend, Claudia. The men there begin unloading bodies into a mass grave, that were "unused."Claudia cringes at the bodies being dumped by her father. She protests to Hector for making her father get involved with the disposal, then they head off to their home.
1:44 P.M.-1:52 P.M.: Hector and Claudia arrive at their home, and she is angry that he's using their family for his illegal business. He promises to give her father one month paid vacation, which makes her storm off in fury. He makes a phone call to find out the call was placed to the FBI. The man on the other end of the line is monitoring Kyle's movements, talking to a friend. He wants him to help him drop off the drugs, for $10,000, but his friend refuses, not wanting any part in it.
Palmer is given more of an update on Salazar and is told about the call made to the FBI. Dr. Packard interrupts again, to give pills to David, to help his condition. Before she leaves, they abruptly share a soft kiss.
1:52 P.M.-2:00 P.M.: Chase helps Jack with a few problems, since Jack is on edge, and not really able to concentrate at all. Chase exits Jack's office, and Chloe asks what Jack's problem is. Chase returns, and has a small talk with Jack, informing him that he knows all about what happened, during the six months Jack spent with Salazar. He said he knows what Jack did, and what they all did.
Chase exits the office, and Jack dims the lights, as he is on the verge of tears, but fights them back, and goes to a small closet. He reaches up into a secret compartment, where he pulls out a box containing a strap, a syringe, and a liquid. He ties the strap around his arm, making the veins bulge out more, and fills the syringe with what appears to be drugs. He readies himself to inject the drug, when Kim asks to come see him over the intercom. He says he's busy, and struggles immensely, trying to decide whether to give up and do it, or back away from it. His struggle ends, when he empties the liquid onto the floor, throws the syringe and the strap across the room, and angrily punches down against the desk in pure fury.
Tick, tick, tick...
