Season 5 started off great and is continuing the pace. This is one such episode full of scenes which did not make me feel like - fillers. To start with, we came to know that there is something bigger that these people who ever they are, are planning. Tony started to recover and for some reason the people who wants Jack dead, killed Palmer are also planning to kill him too. The best part for me was when Andrey finds out that Jack was seeing a woman who did not know anything about jack's past and did not even care about it, the look in Andrey's eyes when she told that she accepted Jack as he is and will continue to do so, That is the exact thing Andrey was unable to do. Another good moment was when she comes face to face with Jack. Chloe' s part though one feels pity for her - we see emotional side of her when she realizes that she has been used for the information. I did not expected that the white house's part in Palmer's murder to be revealed so soon. Now that we know who is behind it and Jack going after them we have to see how he manages to get them. Jack still do not know who in presidents administration is behind these attacks.Plot seems interesting. Thankfully we did not have any episodes /subplots which reduces the pace.
  • Well Written!!!!!

It seems that one episode is superb (1,3,5) the others not (2,4).

Never (except season 2 CTU Plot) in 24 a CTU plot was very well made. Only couting normal episodes, not season finales.

So this time we have another mole in CTU, but this time is justified, since it was possible that to happen, when the orders come from the White House.

First, the details, CTU discovered what the new threat is this time. The terrorist remain calm, nothing happened yet.

The white House plot is becoming boring, as usual, is all about martha, but now became too repetitive an ilogical too, because with so many guards, how martha can escape? How cuttings was able to grab her and nobody noticed?

What this episode did that made this all worth watching was Jack and Chloe Scenes.

Chloe acting was superb, with some funny lines, and she discovered the mole. Of course, not until the mole made his move.

The reunion between Jack and Audrey was the second best highlight of the episode. Their reaction and words was excellent.

The mole in CTU is found, is questioned and he already says the truth only in this episode.

Then we had a surprise about tony, but then we had a very good action fight between JAck and another assassin.

OVerral, the highlights of this episodes (3 of them), make this episode worth watching.

Oh, this one was good.. it had emotions (Jack's and Audrey's reunion was so tearful.. and Chloe..), it had the excitement (what will happen in airport.. the man in CTU) and a lot of danger. So they had a perfect mix for super episode and Tony should be awake and he should be back.. what I am hoping.

Also I liked the whole development on president side.. They are sending the first lady away and she is not giving in so easily.

And the mole in CTU (how that always happens?) and the try to take out Jack.. Oh, it had tempo..

    Eager to see next one.

The end of the airport arc had to bring about some downtime, where everyone reels in from the prior intensity and gets acquainted with this new threat. Which is casually revealed to be nerve gas.

It's just a pit stop, cleaning the stage of what's left from the first four hours and setting it for what's still to come. With twenty episodes on our hands, that stage better not be flimsy (like it was for S4, hardy har).

Jack returns to CTU and meets the people he worked with last season…including Audrey. Awkwardness abound. And as Logan tries to send Martha to an institution, Cummings tries to kill Jack by resorting to such an original plot device: a CTU mole.

Hated it when the obvious choice of Spenser turned out to be Cummings' man, loved it when Spenser turned out to be completely oblivious of Cummings' evilness. It's always nice when the writers twist a tired plot cliché into relative freshness.

The first nine-tenths or so are mostly suspense and slow drama, the comes the big action scene. And boy, was I waiting for something to happen already. This leads into what we'll see in the next episode, as Jack now knows who in Logan's camp is the mastermind of Palmer's death and this nerve gas threat (or so he thinks, hardy har).

    Hourly Highlight:

Nobody cracks Jack Bauer's rib without some scissors in the neck to pay for it! I say nobody!

A lovely twist with the introduction of Tony Almeida back into the show. This episode remains my favourite of all time, i commonly refer to it in general conversation due to the friendship that Tony & Jack seem to share even though the trials they each have gone through. Although Tony seems quite cold towards Jack, as the season continues, you notice how they become better and better at working as a unit. This episode is a perfect example of why i watch 24 and buy the seasons, thank you again to the writers and creators for giving us something truly wonderful.

This is one good episode!! It wasn't very fast paced like other episodes but it was still very exciting to watch and very touching. That scene where Jack and Audrey first see each other was just the sweetest thing ever. I sort of wished that they would hug or something, but it was still a very tender moment. The hospital room scene in which Jack got attacked by the assassin sent by Walt was very good, it kept me on the edge of seat the whole time. And at the end when we found out that Spencer thought all along that he was working for the White House that was shocker. I can't wait to see what Jack is going to do about Walt now.

Any episode where Jack kicks the crap out of someone is a good episode. I liked the fight scene that Jack had with the man in the medical facility and I liked the interaction with Audrey during the episode as well. I like Jacks on screen connection with Audrey and I hope we see them devolop their love again in an episode in the future. If there were anyone for Jack Bauer to end up with - it would be her...or Chole...but that could just be me. The episode was good - Jacks highlights outshining anything happening at the white house with Martha Logan.

It's fast paced. It's all about the anticipation, something will happen in each episode that connects with the next one. In this episode Jack Bauer returns to CTU to get debriefed, he gets to see Audrey Raines once again. But things aren't all happening at the CTU, some stuff happens at the white house as well. A hitman is sent out to kill Jack Bauer, Spenser turns out to be a mole inside CTU and he has his own agenda. Chloe discovers of the things Spenser is not supposed to be doing. This is another great episode, I'm looking forward to the next one.
  • I wasn't impressed with this episode. They could have done so much better.

    4.8
    "Poor"
This was the best that they could do. Really? I was shocked at the first looks between Audrey and Jack. I didn't see any sparks at all. Okay I wasn't shocked because anyone that looks at them can tell that they aren't spark material. Nothing against the actors because you can put two actors that are amazing on their own together and get nothing. Some have it and some don't. I think the storyline with Diane and Audrey was just to soap opera-ish for a show like 24. Audrey just wasn't at her best. Her best isn't actually all that great either so. It was just an episode that if it didn't have Jack and Chloe interacting I wouldn't watch it again, but since it does I guess I will just have to skip the other parts.
  • Good episode.

    "Superb"
First, I'm going to go ahead and point out that I watched this episode and the following episode back-to-back so it's possible I might mention something that actually doesn't happen until the next episode. If you have only seen this one, I'd skip this review.

I like where this is going. After an excellent opening episode (perhaps the most exciting season premiere of the series) and a decent second episode, we spent the majority of the following two episodes focusing on a hostage situation that just fell somewhat flat for me. And that may be a first for 24.

Now, the writers seem to be getting back on track. Jack has returned to CTU for some reunions we all knew were coming but delighted in seeing anyway. I did enjoy the scene between Jack and Audrey (and also the scene between Diane and Audrey), though it seemed to me like it was almost a little too easy. I mean, despite what she says, Audrey DID blame Jack for Paul's death and he'd vanished and left her to believe he was dead. But she is pretty understanding and forgiving about everything. Perhaps Audrey is growing (or maybe other viewers aside from myself also got a little irritated with her last season and the writers are trying to earn her some popularity points).

What a tease! I was happy to see Carlos Bernard's name in the opening of the show, and was looking forward to seeing the scene between Jack and Tony when we were informed that he was awake. But, alas, it was a trick! Stupid terrorists. But that scene was pretty exciting anyway. Of course, you knew Jack would best the bad guy. It's Jack! The guy is practically invincible.

I gotta say, I rolled my eyes a bit when Cummings mentioned having a man on the inside of CTU. Do we really need a mole in CTU EVERY season? And, of course, this year the mole was Spencer. I doubt many people were surprised by this revalation. The only other newbie in CTU is our pal, the Hobbit (I can't think of his character's name!), and I didn't even think about him when Cummings mentioned having an insider. I didn't guess that he thought he was part of an "investigation" though. Well, he lead our man Bauer to Cummings so I doubt we'll see much more of him. Which is just as well, because he isn't a particularly likeable character.
  • Reunions, traitors exposed and an assassin.

    9.5
    "Superb"
I love Martha Logan! Don't know how far she'll get with all the security but given I thought she was going to kill herself, I love her escape plan.

Never really liked Spenser, too sleazy but loved the interogation with Chloe and Bill, then with Jack, and Spenser realises that he just committed espionage, practically treason. He actually went pale!

Gotta say Derek is growing on me. He's acting more like Jack's son by the minute, that sweet moment in the hallway where he apologises to Jack, lovely.

It's bad enough we have to endure Audrey but that disgusting reunion, I'm still nausiated. I don't care that she seems to be more mature, last season's disgraceful behaviour (acting so wishy-washy, whining all the time and particularly her blaming Jack for Paul) destroyed her character for me, not that I ever really liked her anyway.

Walt is exposed and sounds like Jack is going to go all... well, 'Jack' on him. Oh good! It's just not 24 if Jack doesn't torture at least one person! We did get to see Jack at his finest though, all martial-artsy!

On a personal note, these terrorists are so cruel!! How could they get my hopes up about Tony being awake then turns out they're using him as bait?! Damn them! Evil terrorists! No consideration for a person's feelings!

Well, everyone's home to CTU so now all hell's going to break loose, it always does!
  • A few odd errors in this episode but otherwise good.

    8.7
    "Great"
Yet another great episode. It had both comedy and drama and some suspense.

I've got to say I love Chloe. She cracks me up... I loved that we got to see more of her and Edgar in this episode; he seems to be the only one who gets her. I just hope these two can find their way into each other's arms before one of them bites the dust.

I had Spenser pinned as the mole right from the first episode. Though I didn't expect he would be thinking that he was a good guy. That was an interesting twist. Funny though, they are in desperate need of information and they seem to just accept that he won't talk. In earlier seasons CTU has always brought out the torture-agent in these cases.

Martha... sigh... this is really boring me. But I'm almost starting to like President Logan. ALMOST! He's shown more human sides in the past two episodes and he hasn't been such a no-good pain in the ass. Though seriously, what's with Evelyn? She knew about the transcript and clearly saw Martha Logan put it in her bra. Yet she says NOTHING about it. You'd think she'd at least try to tell the president. Unless of course she's a bad guy too...

So they finally came face to face. Audrey and Diane. And Audrey and Jack for that matter. I loved the scene with Audrey and Diane, the former was obviously so uncomfortable and the latter reminded me of Teri Bauer in season one when Nina is taking her statement at the safe house. I really like Diane, I hope she wins the guy in the end. I especially loved when she said to Audrey something along the lines of "knowing what he used to do does not change the way I feel about him". Audrey completely freaked out even though she knew much more than Diane last season. Yet another thing proving that Jack is better off with someone like Diane. She accepts him for who he is, not for who she wants him to be.

Seeing Audrey with Jack was a really good scene though. I liked that she was a bit humble and that they got to sort some things out. But please Jack, as they say, ditch the bitch. Stick with Diane.

I'm really liking Agent Hobbit (or Agent Gamgee perhaps? Anything's better than a guy named LYNN). He's kind of a pain but at least he seems to know how to admit when he's wrong. And unless he's a mole too I think he'll be the kind of character who sticks by Jack even when things get ugly.

But I have to say... that was an odd scene with Jack and him. Agent Hobbit starts out by naming the people who knew Jack was alive. Then when they are told Tony wants to speak with Jack Lynn looks completely puzzled. Jack then says "Tony and I were friends" and Lynn looks like he never expected it. Hello, you just talked about how this man knew Jack was alive, surely you had to know that they at least KNEW each other.

I hope they get their hands on Walt Cummings next week. I really don't like that guy.

  • Was a little less tense than previous episodes - still had some good stuff going on, but was all near the end, the rest was build-up

    8.9
    "Great"
Ooo, sneaky - having the truck painted with SWAT id so it won't be questioned when leaving the airport... Looks a repainted UPS truck, to be honest...

They found where the canisters were kept - is the fact that they don't have gas masks on going to come into play do you think? Hmm, dead rats, yep, they're going to have issues with this...

Martha's issues are coming into play again - that really sucks for her. He'll believe her when it's too late, of course, but hopefully she'll get to say "I told you so". He's going to have her committed - again, from the sounds of it. Well, isn't Walt the lucky bugger - he gets told to take care of the arrangements to lock away the one who could blow things for him. Good for her - bailing out the bathroom window - adds a classic element to the episode... lol

Who is the guy on the inside that Cummings says he has? Ah, Spencer - is that the reason he slept with Chloe, or did he actually like her? Nice of Chloe to apologise to Spencer, even though he's a mole. I like the lighting in the interrogation room when Buchanan and Chloe are talking to him, makes him look somewhat demonic. Let Jack take care of questioning Spencer - it's been ages since he's shot a suspect.

There is something about the way Logan tips his head when he's speaking to people that just makes me nuts. He looks like an idiot - chin tipped up and tipped to the right, almost always - makes him look short compared to whoever he is speaking to, even if he's actually taller than them, and also makes him appear to be constantly looking for approval - not a good thing when you are the guy in charge of a nation as powerful as the U.S.

Sad thing is, McGill is slowing things down, but he's putting the pieces together very well. At least he's not targeting Jack as a suspect any longer. What is his agenda, though?

Aha, finally we know for sure that Tony will survive, and Jack finds out that Audrey is working for CTU and is in the building. Now there was a reunion scene - was well played by both actors.

Cat fight going on in Audrey's office... lol Audrey getting rebuked by Diane about accepting Jack for who he is, and honouring his wish to keep his secrets. Poor Diane - she saw that look, and knew it meant there were still feelings between him and Audrey.

Okay, I like Derek - not the typical teenager. It would take guts to apologise to someone as he did after misjudging them so badly, even if you've been forgiven even before you ever opened your mouth. Still using the wrong shade of lip paint for him though... lol
  • First 55 minutes = OK. Last 5 = AWESOME!

    7.0
    "Good"
The first four hours were designed to set up the season and put it in gear. It was apparent early that they wanted to reclaim their reputation of being a high stakes show where anyone could go at any time. Appropriately, this episode is transitional, allowing them to develop the next major threat while dealing with some of the fall out of the previous one. There isn’t anything too phenomenal (aside from the last five minutes), but there isn’t anything really bad either.

Having nerve gas near the hangar certainly helps explain why the hostage situation was a step bigger than assassinating Palmer. I wonder how Palmer came across the bombshell that they were planning to use nerve gas on the Russians. It’s interesting that despite what has happened so far, the current end game is an attack on another country. That certainly doesn’t mean that the US isn’t going to be attacked (this is hour five, we’re far from safe).

We have hints that there is a lot more to this, as the terrorists were able to find this (or hold it) at this terminal. Lynn, as the rare by the book CTU Officer who shows some competency, lets us know that this isn’t some government surplus, but some non government agent manufactured it. Who are they and how did the Russians find out? Or are they responsible?

One minor plot hole concerns those rats. If they were dead, then wouldn’t it be possible for Curtis and the squad (along with Yellow Tie and his team) to be infected with said toxin? Having the rats dead implies that the containers were leaking, yet there is no mention of quarantining them or having the forensics team wear protective outfits. I guess Curtis had to find out what they had somehow.

Logan is such a schmuck, which makes having a mole in his midst fitting. Walt is able to remain on his good side because he reaffirms Logan’s perspective that his wife is unstable (of course she is, she’d blow your plan if anyone cared to listen to her) and how important his “legacy” is without him coming off as a suck up, not that that nitwit Logan would notice.

It certainly isn’t helping Martha. Despite being attacked on what is supposed to be highly secure land, she can’t get anyone to believe her. Logan refuses to look at any evidence that doesn’t support the “she’s crazy” idea in his head, most notably the fact that none of the medication Martha is on could’ve caused her blackout. Isn’t there surveillance anywhere here? She needs someone to believe her and time is running out, no wonder she bailed.

This is the first time Jack has been involved in a love triangle since Nina and Teri back in the first season. There are some parallels between Diane and Audrey. Both women thought Jack was someone else, literally and figuratively respectively, until one of these fateful days entwined them in the crisis. What makes these women different is how they react to this other side. Because there is character, it saves these scenes from being cheesy melodrama.

Audrey certainly has a lot of baggage from her relationship with Jack. She experienced the good when Jack rescued her and Heller, but within hours he was torturing her ex-husband. Then Jack had to choose the witness’ life over Paul’s and that choice was felt through the rest of the season. Believing Jack was dead certainly intensified all those feelings, something she has been dealing with ever since Day 4 ended. Unlike Audrey, Diane saw the good side of Jack’s nature, with his heroism saving the terminal full of hostages including her son. Since this happened over a half hour earlier, her gratitude is still fresh.

The fact that Diane is able to forgive Jack for keeping this from her (even though she was able to benefit) is a major difference between them and it doesn’t sit well with Audrey. She still has feelings for Jack, and during her interrogation of Diane, she starts to feel that perhaps she isn’t the woman for Jack. Audrey initially appeared to be only a one off character, but this season is proving otherwise.

The other triangle is between Edgar, Spenser and Chloe. Chloe and Spenser were intimate, but fans of the Edgar/Chloe ship from last season are certainly relating to Edgar’s jealousy. Both characters are so socially awkward, Chloe defensive and Edgar sensitive, that they are a great match for each other. Out of the ashes of Tony and Michelle comes the new great 24 pair!

It was great to see some hand to hand combat on 24. Although I do love a great gunfight, fist fights allow a bit more suspense and action. Yeah, seeing the reflection is a bit cliché, but the fight was well choreographed. Plus we get a special kill for scissor neck. So what Jack has a broken rib, he’s had worse on this show.

Spenser’s story sounds true. If he was a hired man, it’s hard to believe that the people who killed Palmer and Michelle within fifteen minutes would hire someone who was as amateurish as Spenser was. Leaving the computer active was the mole equivalent to leaving porn in the VCR. When he was confronted with the dead assassin, he sang quicker than any previous mole. It certainly explains why Cummings would want to bring someone else in CTU to kill Jack instead of having Spenser do it.

This revelation is reminiscent of Alias, whose main character Sydney Bristow believed she was a part of a deep cover operative unit when she was really aiding a deadly enemy. It’ll be interesting to see how Spenser deals with this and how the fall out will affect his relationship with Chloe, who took another page from the Jack Bauer book during his interrogation.

Jack “I'm not CTU” Bauer heading to Logan’s compound is a bit absurd, but boy is it exciting! This is where the personal nature of the threat really benefits the show. Considering Jack is still a non-person, he doesn’t have to follow CTU’s rules. Besides, we really want Jack to get this guy. Plus there is that shot at the end it seems that Walt knows that Jack is out for vengeance.

It does bring to question about Jack suddenly being alive. Since Jack faked his death to avoid being killed by corrupt secret service, wouldn’t that reactivate the case he faced (of which he was guilty)? This could come in play later if someone at CTU has a grudge with the way Jack operates (which certainly is a staple of every season). The lack of coverage of that aspect is a bit lacking in the writing, which considering that it is done by the same guys who wrote the last episode, could be simply the result of them scrambling to write this script after the original writer bowed out (this is speculation, I don’t know).

Overall, this was one of those episodes that is made by its climax. We get some good character moments as the new threat starts. They clearly want to go quickly through this season, apparent as two moles are unveiled in one episode. Just as one crisis ends, we’re plunged into the next one, which is great for 24.

Chloe was so funny! with that let's have camille tea and then i'll tell you all my secrets. I so thought she was right. why should she have to tell everything.

I hate pres. Logan.. he is so frustrating.. why doesn't he pay attention to his wife. He never gives her the attention she deserves. Martha can't be locked away she is right.

Smart move from *whats his name* now she's outta the way he can do whatever he wants!

And Diane so saw that Audrey still loves Jack.. you could see it in her eyes.. When Jack and Audrey stood there i was practically screaming.. Kiss him!!! then that stupid guy came, aghh!! that isn't good for my nerves.. Jack and Audrey really have to get back together..
  • WOW I LOVE JACK BAUER HES SO COOL

OMG this episode was soo...like i was on the edge of my seat!! in the beginning i was like hmm its a bit boring they've done this before kind of and near the end it was like WOW haha "jack is back!" haha finally! omg spencer as the moe was totally predictable but im glad he's kind of a gd guy and martha going out the window was also pretty predicatable. The personal servant woman is a bit...hm i dont know she seems like her loyalties shift and shes kind of sneaky and pretend innocent.

Chloe was hilarious in this episode haha just watching her nostrils flaring up in annoyance is just soo entertaining but her dramatic act about him crawling into her bed was a bit too soap opera ish. they should have made her more sarcastic and bitter. Chloe and Jack's little "thank you" part was really meaningful and it just shows how they completely trust each other which is great! so now jack can count on tony and chloe! OMG i so wish we could see the their conversation together but MAN it was sitll great to see JAck back in action and people trying to kill him again haha EVERYONE is trying to kill him but we all know he is like..the coolest man ever.

jack and audrey: AUGHHH i was like OH MAN! kiss kiss kiss!! already! jesus!! MAn and that stupid person INTERUPTING them i wanted to scream! like COME ON! that happens to much! like in the climax of this great moment someone stupid retarded unknown CTU person jsut INTERUPTS. heloo!!! cant u see its an "intense private conversation"! leave them alone!! haha even if it is a matter of national security...

Audrey interogatiing wats her face was kind of bland because it was so awkward it wasnt even funny but then jack comes in and its just like whooooo heheh all the chicks want jack, cus hes sexy and hardcore.

JACK and the ACtion : awesome!! duuudeee him stabbing the scissors in the guys throat is like NEW!! we've never seen him so taht before!! so cool, of course it cant compare to him and the CHAIR MOVE in season 3 with nina! haha where he runs back into the wall brekaing the chair and then rusns towards her haha (ooohhh) the fistfighting was great kinda like the end of season 2 ..mann 24 is like so great.

Who hates president logan? raise your hand.

i do i do i do AUGH hes such a *beep* this ignorant narcissist man. just the way he asks mike questions annoys the crap out of me like AUGHH idiot! you dont do anything!! and him just throwing off his wifes hand and going out the door and planning to send her to an institution! though with so much cleavage hanging out, i probabaly wouldn't believe her either...

awesome episode!!!!! cant wait for the next!!

I was a bit surprised that the person before me rated this so low... I was on the edge of my sofa! I wanted to know why that guy would betray Chloe and CTU by letting in the assassin. Thankfully, it looks like Jack and CTU are putting together who is behind all the attacks. I'm really excited to find out how the president will react when they tell him what's been going on, and that the mole is in the White House. Very exciting episode. I'm also glad that Audrey and Jack got to get a few words in together. It was very touching. I was glad that she wasn't still mad at him.
  • Great work by all this week. A great example of how to keep suspense high without moving the episode along too fast.

Episode one opens with a bang, and episode 2 carried on with it. Unfortunately for season 5 of 24, episodes 3 and 4 weren't quite as kick ass as the previous two. Which is ok, not all of them can be wall to wall. What did surprise me however is how this one built so well the level of momentum and emotion. The drama on this weeks episode played out well. Actually, for anyone who watched last years season you might suggest it moved along TOO well. Audrey didn't seem to be THAT in love with Jack last year, of course, thats just my opinion. The story elements continue to intrigue, and even the prsence of a mole this season... (Btw, I was THIS close to screaming when I found out there was a mole AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least this guy didnt know he was a mole.... I am really enjoying the character of the First Lady, and think it was a great idea to introduce her. You can also see how she and the president got along in their early days, they both seem to be about as equally irrational. I'm still counting on someone taking a shot at this guy, and not missing. I mean GOD... he is friggen annoying to watch.

Anyway, the point is... go team Bauer, a good episode this week!

This episode started off a little slow, but then picked up pace as it went on, and at the end was just great. Loved the fight scene at the end between jack and the assassin, the good thing about the fight scenes in 24 is that rather than jumping around, the two men are actually trying to kill each other which makes it seem more realistic. Nice and gory how jack finished the assassin off.
  • Nothing new, but Logan is finally loosing it.

Jack is back! Finally! After Jack helped CTU at the airport, he is taken back to CTU where he finds out that he is cleared and that they too thinks he framed for the murder of Pr. Palmer.

It was painful to watch Jack when he saw that Audrey had to interview Diane. He didn't know what to do, and it will be interesting to see who he chooses to be with.

To me, it looked like the canistars were supposed to be used in an attack against Moscow, not in the USA. What will happen if they use the U.S. military nervegas against the Russians and blame the U.S. government?

Have the Chinese ambassy forgotten about Jack, or are they too aware of his fake death, and will they interveene too?

An average episode, and I hope that feelings will be set aside, and that action again is the primary focus in the series.

Wow!!!! I just finished the episode and it was amazing! This season is easily getting the award \"best season beginning\" already, and all elements are in for making this possibly the best season yet. Offcourse we still have like 19 hours to go, and knowing 24 the problems in today\'s episode will already have been solved long before the season is even halfway. But that makes it even better, because no season has everhad a better first half than the second half (although lots op people will disagree, and then point at the last season) . So probably we have the best part coming at us yet.

The episode starts off with the set-up for the next chapter. Where in the first three seasons we could always divide the season in two parts, season 4 started off the new tradition of having several different chapters all containing different threats. Where we first had the hostage situation, now it\'s building up to a \'nerve gas\'-incident. Curtis and his team trace the path the yellow-tied man took after his escape from the terminal and find the (not so) hidden bunker that contained the nerve gas. Where it\'s from and what the purpose will be of the gas is still a mystery to CTU. But in the meantime the viewer sees the interaction between the terrorists and finds out that they are planning an all out strike in Moscow, lead by some bad-ass Robbie Williams look-alike.

Nice action on the way, but for the most part this episode was about deep emotional issues.

First we had Martha Logan who felt completely betrayed by the person who she loves the most. After her attack she mentions the stolen document, but seeing this as another dellusion, Logan decides to place her back in a hospital. Personally I think Logan is going to be in for some serious guilt when he finds out about Cummings\' role in all of this. If he ever does...

Then it\'s up to our little love triangle Jack-Diane-Audrey. McGill decides it\'s best that Audrey takes control of the interrogation of Diane Huxley. Offcourse Audrey thinks this is weird, because of all that went on between her and Jack. Also keeping in mind that she hasn\'t even seen her former lover since finding out he was still alive. But that\'s exactly the reason why McGill thinks this is the right thing: they have something in common, Diane & Audrey. The interrogation isn\'t that big of a deal. We only find out that Jack meant a lot to Diane & Derek. Jack shows up and the tension builds. But when he leaves , Audrey follows him and they have a very emotional conversation. Personally I hope they end up together again one day. Jack\'s profession doesn\'t appeal to Audrey, but I still think it would be more \'normal\' to her than to Diane.

Another big issue this episode is the mole thing, with Spencer working for Cummings. We see that when Spencer gets a call from Walt asking him to arrange a clearance for someone who\'s coming in to \'monitor\' Jack (first thing that person does on entering is assembling a gun) . After another failed attempt at trying to be friendly Chloe finds out that he\'s been accessing level 5 files when Spencer only has a level 3 clearance. Offcourse she instantly notifies Buchannan. Shortly afterwards Spencer is caught, but he doens\'t admit nor say anything. He even tries to blame it all on Chloe being dellusional, after she loses it at him in the interrogation room. \"You getting in my bed was not as it seemed, not was your work\" (not an exact quote, but you get the picture).

Afterwards Buchannan asks if jack suspects someone wanting him dead. Jack then tells Bill about his last conversation with palmer, where the ex president told him someone in Logan\'s camp wanted him dead. So thet is his only suspect. That (still unknown) person in Logans\'s camp. Buchannan then gets a call that Tony is conscious and able to speak. But he wanted to talk with Jack first. But in the infirmary Jack sees that Tony is still very dormant and he\'s attacked by the assassin that Spencer let in. Jack naturally takes care of him, killing the guy in the progress.

Between all this excitement there is still some suff going on at the presidents place. Completely betrayed Martha just dissapears and only leaves an empty bottle of pills. Not very good, knowing that she said she\'d rather die than go back to that hospital Logan is sending her to.

Finally we get a magnificent ending. Jack confronts Spencer with the dead assassin and Spencer breaks. He tells jack that he was recruted by Walter Cummings in an \"internal affairs\" situation. he thought he was working for the president, by helping them investigate if CTU is working correctly.

So know they know who killed palmer and wants Jack dead : Walter Cummings. But they have to build a case against him if CTU wants to barge in and accuse the presidents chief-of-staff and personal friend of treason. But jack wouldn\'t be Jack if he decided to go after Cummings alone... After all \"I\'m not CTU\".... 11:59:59

  • Washed dishes through msot of this one and didn't miss a whole lot. Not the greatest episode, but they can't all be wall-to-wall action.

After all of the stuff set up in the first four hours of this season, it was sort of inevitable that this one would be a little slower. What I found kind of disappointing was that nothing exciting happened until the last ten minutes, when Jack had to fight off that guy who was trying to kill him. And what\'s with all the moles working at CTU? Who in the world is doing background checks on these people? At least some of the emotional subplots seem to be linked to the main story this season. The first lady is pretty much intolerable to watch, but at least she has some information about the day\'s attacks. Don\'t know about you, but I\'m eager to see where this will go from here!
  • Excellent, even with the lack of elemental surprise.

Okay, basically last week we witnessed 4 hours of top notch 24.

As usual, the fifth episode is known for filling in plot details, mainly advancing the plot. Sure it wasn't excellent (still great though), but they can't give away all the surprises this early on in the game. Basically, they needed to reintegrate Bauer into CTU, and this episode really proved that. They also developed certain dynamic plot points, and definitely left us with some questions about some of the new key players in the story.

They have set the stage for a few different conflicts and story lines, mainly developing certain storylines I thought were going no where. Martha Logan and Spencer Wolff both have storylines which could prove to be intriguing, should they be developed properly. Where I once thought these were dead ends, I am giving these two plot lines a second chance. Still not seeing anything interesting develope in regards to Diane Huxley / Audrey Raines, but then again, I didn't really want to. Maybe they won't focus on that aspect too much.

Can't wait for Kim Bauer's episode arc though, and not sure how they will make it an integral part of the story line without falling into the old 'Kim Bauer, you dumb ass' trap from seasons 2 and 3.
  • Overall, this episode is an interesting mix of the usual transitional elements and some absurdly-paced plot developments.

    7.0
    "Good"
As one would expect, coming off a four-episode introductory arc, this episdoe is largely transitional. Even so, the plot threads move forward at a blistering pace. Elements that once would have extended over several episodes, like the search for a possible mole or determining the traitor within the administration, both come to fruition in less than an hour. In a way, this is good, since the writers would otherwise be accused of retread, but it also betrays the casual logic of the story as a whole.

It wasn’t immediately obvious in the previous episode that the nerve gas had been held underground in a building near the terminal where the hostages were held, but it makes a lot more sense for that to be the case. Now the specific location of the hostage incident seems more reasonable. There’s the obvious question, however: how was the floor excavated without anyone knowing about it, and why stage such an intricate plan to divert attention if the wide open space in the empty hanger could be found within hours?

It’s a question that still hasn’t been answered. If the goal is to commit a terrorist act without warning of the scale or timetable, quietly passing on the keycard would have been the better move. Otherwise, it’s just going to bring down scrutiny, which robs the element of surprise. Granted, the terrorists weren’t counting on anyone identifying the keycard swap, but it still doesn’t make sense. Unless, of course, the goal was, for some reason, to bring attention to the site.

The dead rats also bring up a disturbing issue. It probably seemed like a good way to pass that information on to the authorities, plot-wise, but the dead rats are a sign of leakage or exposure. Which, according to the end of the previous episode, was checked for and determined not to be the case. So how were the rats exposed? Wouldn’t that imply, since the canisters were underground, that the chemical agents were leaching into the air and groundwater prior to excavation?

Supposedly the plan is to expose the population of Moscow in retaliation for the Russian occupation of some Slavic nation or territory. All right, that’s all well and good, but it leads to the obvious question: how did Russian terrorists gain knowledge of weaponized nerve gas that wasn’t created and maintained by the US military? Where did it come from, and how did the terrorists know about it?

Martha just can’t catch a break. She’s drugged and assaulted in the middle of one of the most well-secured parts of the planet (thanks to the summit), and still no one bothers to run a blood test or check on her claims in any credible fashion. They just want to ship her off to Vermont. Just what has she done in the past to be dismissed so often? Still, how hard was it to figure out that she would manage to escape?

Walt is not the smartest conspirator on the planet. Then again, neither is his friend Nathanson. Killing Jack in the middle of CTU is not even remotely a smart move, since all it does is expose an asset and prove that the scope of the conspiracy is exactly as big as Martha keeps claiming. It would have been far more logical to wait until Jack left the building, use the “assassin” to monitor the progress of the investigation, and then make the attempt on Jack once he was on the move.

This being a transitional episode, relationships were at the forefront. It’s about time that Edgar’s jealousy rose to the occasion, and unlike some annoying relationships in past seasons, this one is actually a bit cute. They really are made for each other! It’s a bit too easy for Spenser to be the mole, since in retrospect it made his affair with Chloe a bit too convenient, but the main problem is that the actor plays Spenser like Hayden Christensen played Anakin Skywalker.

Lynn, He of the Unfortunate Name, is quite the bastard. Tossing Audrey into the same room as Diane, just to find out how Jack might have been exposed? Deliciously evil. The scenes with Audrey and Diane were cringe-inducing. As much as Audrey was the victim of some unfortunate writing choices in the fourth season, her role this season makes a lot of sense, if only for scenes like this. At least the writers had Audrey admit that she was a complete pain in the ass last season!

As usual, Jack gets his security clearance back more quickly than any bureaucracy would ever allow (getting his actual identity reinstated ought to be a lot of fun…there’s a season unto itself!), which eliminates one of the more interesting possibilities. Why let Jack off the hook so easily? There are still several questions left unanswered about the whys and wherefores of the whole terrorist plot, and why Jack was targeted so specifically. Walt is part of that connection, but why would Lynn assume Jack is completely innocent? (And why hasn’t anyone mentioned the Chinese?)

One of the more amusing (if ridiculous) scenes in the entire episode comes well after Jack’s touching moment with Chloe when he walks in. Once again, there’s the father/daughter vibe. But imagine what he would have thought if he heard her style of interrogation! Bill looked like her head had just exploded! It’s a very good thing that Spenser is a bad liar and Bill’s in a sour mood over Lynn’s arrival. Otherwise Chloe would look a bit hysterical.

Lest anyone think Jack is softening up, there’s that scene at the end. Ignore, for a moment, the elements that will give Jack/Tony slash writers more material than they can handle; Jack’s inner turmoil is written all over his face when he takes his first look at Tony’s condition. The writers balance the manly emotional content with scissors to the throat in a wonderfully excessive moment, so all remains right in the world, but there’s little doubt that Jack continues to tally up the cost.

Spenser caves rather quickly when confronted with a seriously wounded Jack (just how is he supposed to act like his ribs are grinding together for 18 more hours?), but the real leap into the realm of absurdity comes at the very end. So Jack is going to hunt down the Chief of Staff like some kind of vigilante, only hours after a major political event and terrorist attack. Against a Chief of Staff, no less, who serves under a president who was more than happy to toss Jack to the Chinese wolves 18 months earlier.

There’s little doubt that the plot will dwell on the insanity of this little plot twist in the next episode, since events will typically spiral out of control. But is this the first example of the writers flying by the seat of their pants? They’ve already started with the excuses of how impossible it is to plan out the season ahead of time, so one has to assume that the story is already in freefall mode. If this is the level of absurdity that’s already on the table, this could be the most improbable season arc yet.

  • A slowdown in pace for 24, but that doesn't mean a lack of action.

    "Superb"
After last week's explosive 4-hour premier I was, as usual, anticipating the rest of the new series. 24 has always managed to balance action with key plot twists and characterisation. As the writers have often pointed out it is difficult to 'develop' a character over a 24 hour period, but they do a good job giving them conflict and filling them out, at no point making them seem superficial.

A more plot-developing episode this week which meant less agression from Bauer, but definately opened the series up and made me wonder where they will take us over the next 19 episodes. The last ten minutes made up for the lack of action early on, and as usual 24 makes me struggle to wait another week for more.

Buy the old box sets, they are all well worth picking up.
  • Great episode. Wasn't as much action, till the last 5 minutes, but it was okay. Great writing. Can't wait till next week. Looks even better.

Jack returns to CTU and reunites with Audrey. Audrey finds out about Diane Huxley, and is asked by Lynn McGill to question her. Meanwhile, Martha Logan is still unconscious, and President Logan wants her to leave the White House early, but she manages to avoid it. Also, a CTU Agent is found to be associated in a scandal.

After four hours of death, hostages, big guns, more death, more big guns, and a heroic rescue, 24 settles down a bit, as it needs too. You can't expect every episode to be like the first 4 hours, and they needed this episode to clarify some things from last episode, and to keep the plot going without killing more people. It was what I expected it to be, and was pretty good. And, it ended with what everybody loves: Jack Bauer style interrogation! And, I could handle one more death on this show - Audrey. KILL HER OFF! Thanks.
  • Great episode

I thought this episode rocked! We found the mole in CTU inside 1-hour! That has to be a new 24 record, to reveal the presence of the mole and for them to be caught inside one episode is totally unprecendented. I was scared that would roll on for weeks. And Jack and CTU know Walt C. is the enemy. I thought for sure, he would remain in the shadows for at least 2 or 3 more painstaking hours. I am very pleased we can look forward to that weasle's comeupance, as I that character really chaps my backside!

I had that feeling that after episode 5-04 we will get another filler episode. I guess I was right:

After 4 breathtaking episodes the fifth episode was a little boring and I felt that almost nothing happened on that episode.

    BUT,

At least this episode ended well. Jack's fight with the assassin was excellent and I think that the next episode (5-06) will be goooood like the first 4 episodes.

Also, I must say that Chloe's character is still great and funny and that Martha Logan's character is one of the best things that happened till now in season 5.

    5-06 here we come!
