first of all rating the episode as 10 is, I think, underrating it. It just is awesome. First of all reunion of Kim and Jack was done very well. I would not have liked it as much if it had been a tearful hug scene. Kim's reaction is good - confused - angry - yet glad. Henderson still did not break and kept in the same room as Tony is. Now, we understood what terrorists are up to by taking the key card and entering CTU. my worst guess came true - but it was until last moment I was thinking that the disaster would be averted somehow.
Climax scene is really heart breaking. He and Chloe get along together so well - scenes between them were never boring. I cursed them for ending the character this way - I wish it had been different. We still are not clear what these guys think they are doing under pretext of protecting the country.

"ARGUABLY one of the greatest television shows of all time"? **** that!
Let's start with Logan, who's being pressured by Vice President Hal Gardner to declare martial law in Los Angeles. Why, judging from his mannerisms, it's almost as if Gardner is corrupt…yes, he must be. I'm convinced now!
But CTU is where it's at. Not only do Jack and Henderson arrive at CTU, where Chloe, Audrey, Edgar, and Buchanan already are, but Kim finally returns and has a quiet reunion with her presumed-dead father. Whoa, so many important characters in the same place at the same time, one of them Kim freakin' Bauer. It's like a sign that something very bad is about to go down at CTU.
Lo and behold, one of Bierko's henchmen struts into the place with a Sentox canister and tries to release it into the ventilation system. So we've got even more inner-CTU suspense, which later veers into inner-CTU action! How often do you get to say that? And of course, the canister ends up opening and releasing the gas, because let's face it—the bad guys gotta have their minor victories every season. If they didn't, would this show be as good as it is?
The twists, the turns, the drama, the intrigue, and a tragic ending make this another worthy contribution to S5's peachy track record. And there's still half a season left. "w00t" is the only way I can put it.

    Hourly Highlight:

Season 5 of 24 hasn´t fall from the 10 mark under my opinion so far. This season is really brilliant. Now I understand why almost everyone of the fans ranked this fifht day as the best. And, one more time for me since the season two, i have to review another episode far from the season finale. The reason is that episode surpasses the impressive first one of this present season and it´s the best episode of the season yet... and maybe the second best episode in my personal list (the number one stills being 1x24). I also understand why this episode is so higly ranked in top episodes!.

So shocking... So surprising... So tearful... So sad...
  • Absolutely surpasses 24's already high standard

Anything less than a ten in score on this episode is an outrage. This was singlehandedly the best episode ever of 24. The exciting and high octane action of this episode makes it a heartstopping rollercoaster ride from start to the absolutely spectacular finish. Spoilers ahead if you have not watched this ep.

The end with Edgar was superb and the silent clock really topped it off, so much so that if the usual beeping was used it would have been a travesty and so out of place. The silent clock however was perfection. Even as a guy who never cries, that almost got me. PS Never look at the reviews before you watch any episode in 24 because it ruins it.

What I liked -» CTU being Attacked successfully. Kim and Jack interaction.

What I Didn´t Liked -» One more death, I think it wasn´t necessary.

    Action - » (7/10). Little Action here.

Drama - » (10/10). One more death and it is very sad. Kim plays a nice drama too.

Suspense/Tension - » (10/10). After the Cylinder with the nerve gas spread, you can feel that someone specific will be dead.

Surprises/Shocks - » (10/10). Kim appearance in this episode, where CTU will be attacked again, fate or coincidence. Also, one more death and the attack really happens.

Time and Scene Management - » (9/10). Unfortunately you have more filler scenes until what you want see happens and catch your attention. I think that this is way that Kim was there, to avoid that. How things played was nicely done.

Plot Details/Holes- » (10/10). Nothing that can turn you off or flaws that you can notice.

Beginning - » (7/10). The presentation was about details little conversation and preparations.

Complication Phase - » (9/10). CTU is attacked and it is something that is very rare

Climax - » (10/10). When the Nerve gas spread in CTU, Ending - » (10/10). You can expect that it will be very Sad, a rare ending.

This perfect season five arrives to the half of the day with an incredible episode!.

The drama and the quality have been intensified in this season, making this one the best season of the series yet and giving the audience a really masterpiece plot and totally shocking episodes without any mistakes and full of suspense and surprises.

And this episode wins all this goals and it even could be the best episode of the season!.

While Jack gives Henderson to the CTU and has a intense meeting with Kim, a deadly mole infiltrates in the place with deadly purposes.

All the episode is so heart pounding and extremely good, the acting is perfect, the tension unstoppable and the ending is really shocking and totally dramatic.

This ending is one of the show saddest ending!

    You MUST see this hour!

    Could be the Best!!!!.

So.. the hunt for nerve gas continues but things are going wrong.. and now everything goes for the storyline set motion long ago - the keycard. Terrorist use it to get CTU and despite one agent suspect somethings she is killed and when they all get what is going on, it is too late and gas is released.. and with what kind of results.. And this episode.. we have Kim back.. and when it looks promising first, it is soon.. oh.. I have never liked her, the way she took that her father is still alive and the whole thing between.. Audrey had much better reaction. She had almost lack of any emotions.. ok, it can be shocking but.. I expected little more of their reunion.
  • Wow! This is truly as good as it gets! What an ending, oh what an ending, it was so sad. (Review and Summary)

Wow! What an episode. This episode proves that 24 is as unexpected as it gets! -Spoilers If You Haven't Watched It Yet-

Ok, so the terrorists are in possession of many canisters of deadly nerve gas, and Glyn has had his security card stolen by his sister, who is now dead as she sold it to the terrorists. So, the terrorists get into CTU, and release the gas (I had expected Jack to find the gas before it was let off, but no!) Everybody suddenly realises that the gas has been let off, but it's too late, it's already started killing people, and the gas has blocked the exits, so the main 'gang' and Jack's daughter rush up to the situation room, which gets sealed and is then gas proof. But, Edgar isn't there, and he suddenly runs into the main computer area of CTU, where the gas is just getting to. The Situation Room is sealed shut, and everybody watched him die through the glass, as he shouts'Chloe!'. It was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever witnesses- in that it was so sad, to see Chloe (Who never normally shows much emotion) start crying, as her eyes glaze over, it just worked so well. Praise to the producers of this amazing show! President Logan and his wife are flawless. This whole series has made the best viewing ever! I am so sad, but can't wait to see what happens next!

    This was a good episode.

I like when a person is trying to get out of CTU and the lock it down. I like to hear that noise. from what i remember is the Henderson is taken and asked thing at CTU and and because Mcgill got his key card stolen from his sister and her boy frenid a bad guy gets a hold of it and walks right into CTU now that is kind of out their because whont they know the people they work with that has always buged me a little bit. But the sad part is when Edgar dies that is just sad.

One of the better 24 episodes to ever air. The reunion of Kim Bauer and Jack was emotional, yet very wierd. Instead of understanding whatv her father had to do and take him back, she actually just distanced herself from him whihc I thought was a little odd. Had she resented and then hugged him at the end that would have been much better. The crisis inside of CTU was the climatic part of the season. The fact that many people died and only a handful were saved was one of the more pressure filled moments in 24 history. The death of Edgar is sure too loom over Chole in the episodes to follow.
  • A great episode of 24 with all the usual things you come to expect from 24 suspense, tension and sadly, death.

Even though i knew that edgar died(i did not want to know spoilers but i went on to read the article abotu lost vs 24 and it was there- i live in england)it was a brilliantly done moment it wasnt overdone and it was really sad, I was happy at the return of kim and the attack on CTU was sopmething new and interesting(to me anyway i started watching in season 4) overall a great episode R.I.P Edgar styles.10/10

I think the CTU is the most infiltrated and hacked agencies in the series, in all the season there have been spies, computers hackers INSIDE CTU!!! That is so incredible been the counter terrorist agency of the US.....even so, I think in this episode Lynn was just a bad agent for not report his stolen key card....endeed I love the series, I think they (the producers and writers) must stop messing around the CTU within, they can keep the plot without destroying CTU and it will keep the seri4es very activate, it is almost becoming a comic plot anytime any terrorist could hack, attack, infiltrate, anulate, and even bomb the CTU so easyly.....well I just my opinion........also, it is great to see Kim Bauer back on the series.......also it is kind of sad to see Edgar under the influence of the nerve gas......I hope they can save him, I will se the next episode
  • Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

When I first saw this episode, that was the only thing that I could say after it has ended. I was in utter shock and disbelief.

Throughout the entire episode, the writers had been building up the intensity with the man who infiltrated CTU. First, he gets the keycard. Then, he gets inside. After that, he sets up the nerve gas. Then he kills Carrie. Finally, boom.

The last five minutes of the episode are the best, scariest, and most intense of the entire series. I was freaking out the entire time. When the nerve gas was actually released, my mouth dropped. When the people started to cough and collapse, I started saying, "Oh, my God." The music was terrifying, as were all of the people dropping like flies. Recalling how I first felt when watching this, I can feel my heart rate and breathing quicken.

Then came one of the most unexpected, shocking, and saddest moments of the show. Edgar. I literally kept saying "Oh, my God," and my voice broke. I got up from my chair, fell on my knees, and dropped the remote. It was the most emotionally draining moment I've ever seen in the entire show. I literally did not move for at least a full minute after the episode was over. I was too stunned. This isn't really one of my typical reviews, but I just had to say that about this episode.

  • This is the start of the first real crisis INSIDE CTU.

This episode had a very slow start which was a little disappointing However, as we moved forward, the pacing got much better, and it all led to an 'explosive' final 10 minutes.

The episode featured countless number of deaths.

Basically, I think, this 24 episode had the most deaths so far.

Lots of CTU workers died. This episode has the coldest death in 24 history(IMHO). CTU Employee(sorry i dont remember her name) getting stabbed from the behind. Somehow i found that incredibly cruel.

Talk about cruel. The finale few minutes... OOOOk.

So I was really thinking Edgar made it. Heck.. he didn't. Damn it. He deserved the silent clock. Yes, he did. Rest in Peace Edgar. May you be with your mom now.
  • The saddest episode yet made, with a shocking end, and the return of an old character.

    "Perfect"
Jack's daughter Kim, who believed Jack was dead, arrives at CTU, only for Audrey to tell her that Jack is still alive. While happy, Kim isn't sure if she can forgive him yet, which Jack sadly accepts and understands.

Meanwhile, the terrorists have breached security with Lynn's keycard, and have taken a cannister of nerve gas right into the CTU headquarters, ready to release into the ventilation system, leading up to the saddest moment so far, and, coupled with the silent clock, is more shocking than Chapelle's death.

Once the nerve gas has been released, Jack, Audrey, Kim, Chloe, Bill, and a few others have sealed themselves in the siuation room. Unable to open it for anyone because of the gas, the group see people dying painfully outside. Then comes Edgar, mouthing "Chloe". From outside the situation room, she mouths "Edgar". Then the gas hits him, and he slowly dies in front of their eyes. The episode ends with trickles running down Chloe's cheeks, and the mournfully silent clock.
  • Wow! A contender for the best episode ever!

What an episode! Yet again 24 exceeds its own high standards as it brings us yet another great death scene. It was the final scene, complete with silent clock, that brought the real horrors of terroism to the foreground. It is for this reason that I place this episode as one of the greatest episodes to date. The subtle but highly emotional final scene was a tribute to the fine acting we have come to expect from such a great series. I just hope that Chloe manages to make it to the end of the season as the loss of this character would be a great loss indeed!
  • CTU is once again the target of a terrorist attack and once again a CTU employee dies... plus Kim returns.

    9.5
    "Superb"
Just like it happened in Day 2 CTU is under attack, this time biological, massive human loss with one twist... the survivors are now trapped inside. How are they going to overcome this situation makes whatever happen next just worth watching. Now I cannot believe Lynn Mcgill the ultimate by-the-book federal employee would fail to report his keycard stolen from the begining... it puzzles me. Tony has recovered, wonder if he'll blame Jack over Michelle's death. Kim is back and after a rather bitter reunion I wonder what's in store for her this day... Looks like Jack and new boyfriend Barry are not going to get along adding more tension to an already tense situation... finally, sorry for poor Edgar, but let's face it he had coming when ignored Carrie's warning... I still think Chappelle's death remains the most shocking moment of the series so far though... Let's see what happens next...
  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! ............................ OMG!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! What!?!?! Edgar is no longer with us? I hope they have a funeral for him. And Jack would say someting about him and at the end he would say,"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust." Ha that would be so cool. But seriously, why? Ah, who cares at least Jack's not dead.
  • This is one episode I will never forget.

    9.5
    "Superb"
There are only two things I feel like commenting on as far as this episode goes... Kim and Edgar and their storylines.

Kim is back, with a bad wig (or a bad hairdo perhaps). Her relationship with Chase is over, something I wish I had more details on because it seems a little "the actor was busy so we made up a new boyfriend". I don't know what purpose she is supposed to serve this season but I'm glad they brought her back because we did want to see her reunion with Jack. I'm glad it wasn't a sobfest. But I'm not too happy with her reaction either, it's fine if it's only an initial reaction but if it's going to be an issue throughout the season then send her off with that 40+ boyfriend of hers.

I officially hate 24 for killing Edgar! He was a wonderful character, he was the nice guy at CTU and we needed him! And I really liked the development in his friendship with Chloe, he was the only one who not only understood her but seemed to appreciate her quirks. The scene where she realises he will die and he calls out to her was heartbreaking! Right up there on the top three with Teri's death and the killing of Ryan Chappelle. I will miss Edgar a LOT and I honestly think it was a great mistake to kill him off. 24 needed someone like him.

I don't know what more to say really... I have rarely been this numb after watching a TV-show. Edgar deserved better than this.

  • The end of Edgar and the return of accident prone Kim Bauer

Jack is reunited with Kim in which doesn't go down well. The president is pressured to impose martial law in LA. However an unknowing CTU is about to compromised and taken out. But Lynn only just reporting his keycard theft leading to the breach at CTU.

Jack finds and kills him leading to the evacuation. But the nerve gas was released killing most of CTU with some in safe zones. Oh No where Edgar he's still outside lokks at Chole and falls to his death. There was some supreb acting from all especially Mary Lynn Rajskub and Louis Lombardi

    Excellant instalment!

    R.I.P Edgar Stiles
  • The terrorists target an unsuspecting CTU, and Jack is reunited with Kim.

    9.8
    "Superb"
Firstly, I\\\'d like to take a moment to remember Edgar. Now I know some of you considered him to be as useful as a chocolate teapot, but personally I was rather fond of the big guy. After all, he worked hard, with integrity and never complained (well not that much!) and he loved his mum (god rest her soul) The last few moments of the episode were sublime, beautifully encapsulating the untrodden love between Edgar and Chloe- and also wonderfully subtly, it was Audrey who voiced the very quiet \\\"oh no\\\" illustrating Edgar\\\'s popularity within the CTU.

Anyway, enough with the sadness, this is a happy review- so smile :-)

Kim\\\'s back! Yay! And she\\\'s got long hair! Yay! And a new boyfriend of the season! Yay! Who already gets the Miguel Award for needing a Slap! Yay! Now, maybe this is just me, but if there is a character in any American TV show named Barry, then I automatically dislike him- and funnily enough the defintion of Barry if the USTV bumper book of names is \\\"seriously uncool bloke who is dating a main character seriously hotter than himself.\\\" Please Kim get back with Chase, he may have looked a bit like Little My from the Moomins, but he was at least cool.

The scene\\\'s between Kim and Jack were electric. The chemistry between Elisha and Kiefer gets stronger all the time and the fact that Kim is now the more dominant of the two characters was a fantastic piece of writing. However she\\\'s still eclipsed by Chloe in the feisty woman stakes. I\\\'m hoping Kim\\\'s going to be around for a bit as I\\\'m hoping to see some more scenes between Kim and Jack, especially since she now knows about Michelle and Tony. And given that 85% of the cast are now trapped in an airtight room- always sensible- I\\\'m hoping there will be time for a heart to heart.

It still astounds me that after five years, numerous moles and a bombing, breaking into CTU is still easier than a daytime TV competition question. However, it\\\'s always fun when a hostile is running around the building, and the whole \\\'he\\\'s got a radio\\\' sequence was played out beautifully, nice to see the producers give a nod to Star Trek but letting the guy in red have it. Orstoff was never going to live though which is a shame as he was quite good fun, which means apart from The Judderman who seems to be content to sit in a bunker answering the phone in the grand tradition of 24 ubervillains, Robocop is the major big bad at the moment- if he isn\\\'t in a coma of course, which he might be. Again I thought they might have learned from the numerous interrogations of Nina Myers that injection therapy doesn\\\'t work. Still he might be in the same room as Tony now, and since it looks unlike either of them can go anywhere for awhile, methinks sparks are gonna fly!

Which leads us nicely on to Nixon and Friends. Martha clearly doesn\\\'t get a lot of action with her hubby as merely holding hands with Aaron was enough excitement to make her want a cigarette! Still the Nixon\\\'s are happy again! Awww! But there\\\'s a new VP, the ridiculously named Hal Gardener. Hal as anyone who has seen 2001 knows is not the name of a sensible person and the martial law idea certainly adds credibility to that theory. Hopefully Mike will manage to convince the President to reshuffle his senior staff, perhaps getting rid of the dodgy ones- no wait that does appear to be all of them. Look\\\'s like Logan\\\'s Run (sorry couldn\\\'t resist!) in power may be in trouble yet again.

So all in all, an absolutely superb episode. Nicely plotted, beautifully acted and with a truly tragic ending. And lastly, it\\\'s nice to see that Sentox cannisters come with USB ports. It makes it so much easier to transfer the nerve gas to your home computer without all that messing around with CD-roms.

The best episode ending in this season.

It's very sad that Edgar had to die, he was a realy good guy... I have so much expectations between him and Chloe.

  • Great finale, breaking the 6 - 7 PM curse.

    8.0
    "Great"
Every season of 24 has its weaker moments, but one hour was weak for the first four seasons: 6 – 7 PM. It was always some type of transitional episode where little happens. This episode, however, breaks that curse, especially in the white knuckle climax leading to the crushing final moments. It makes for an ambitious end to the first half of the season.

First, yes, many weren't happy to see Kim back and could take her reaction to what Jack did as annoying, but unlike some of her notorious appearances, this is more fitting for the show. They had to address Kim because she is a major piece of Jack's life. It has deeply affected her, showing that there were certainly more consequences to Jack's fake death than what happened earlier in the day.

Instead of being with Chase, who was in many ways a younger version of Jack, she has decided to go with the opposite for her assumed new boyfriend Barry. Barry is gentle, a little too much for Jack's taste. Considering Barry is twenty years older than Kim is, she could be looking for a father figure whose work doesn't involve massive casualties. This fact is definitely a big reason for the friction between him and Jack on first impression.

Although many have reason not to sympathize with Kim, her reaction is understandable. However, why didn't anyone tell her what happened to the people who knew? Certainly that would make her, as Chloe said, "cut him some slack". It's fitting that Chloe tell her if it wasn't going to be Jack, but why wouldn't Jack be upfront with that initially.

The appearance of a Vice President on 24 is never a good thing for the president, from Prescott showing up to usurp Palmer's position to Logan's first appearance as Keeler was placed out of commission. The problem with VP Gardner is that he is far too competent in the wrong way. Even with the extreme order for the day, his too eagerness to declare marshal law is unsettling, and his attempts to soften the blow with semantics aren't making it any easier. Gardner, like Logan, can draw comparisons to certain heads of state, but this isn't a political review. Character wise, this is dangerous considering how insecure Logan is about any problem facing him.

Something about Martha's actions in this hour doesn't click. We understand that she wants to punish Logan for what he did, but her playing along for the good of the country doesn't come off smoothly. Instead, it comes off that she forgets that Logan backed down to terrorists.

One thing in Tony's scene didn't fit. Before Michelle died, he was ready to follow her to CTU to help. Although he is mourning her death, couldn't he demand some type of temporary clearance to help them bring Michelle's killers to justice? Also, wouldn't Jack want to talk to him? Yeah, Jack had a lot to deal with, but he could afford a few minutes. Regardless, this is more setting up a showdown between Tony and Henderson, who should be close to each other in the medical section.

Henderson must know something, or else all this fuss wouldn't be made over it. His crucifixion pose on that gurney suggests that he is willing to be a martyr for his patriotism, and that he is poised to be the new über baddie on 24. He threatens talking will only result in unleashing bigger problems, which would make him hiding nothing anticlimactic. Along with that, having him die in the nerve gas incident would be a disappointment.

While it is interesting that we didn't see all the main players survive the gas attack, it's safe that none of the major characters (besides Edgar) died. Because this was Lynn's fault and he was acting supremely obnoxious earlier, he seems the most likely poised to make a redeeming sacrifice. While dying in the initial dispersal of the nerve gas would be punishment for his grave error, it wouldn't fit with what they're trying to do with him.

Again, CTU needs to invest some of our tax dollars in decent lighting. The ventilation room Carrie was stabbed in wasn't lit at all. Of course, that was to give Osrtoff the ability to stab her in the brainstem unimpeded, but you'd think the number of times something bad happened in one of these dark corridors would encourage better lighting.

One of the biggest contrasts between the "threat of the hour" from the last episode to this one is that CTU is completely unaware of Ostroff until it is too late (on that note, wouldn't he know that kicking the gate at Jenny and Dwayne's apartment would earn unwarranted attention?) Ironically, CTU was better equipped for the hospital mission than the one on their doorstep.

The ending is some great stuff, as everyone scrambles to find safe haven while the unfortunate ones fall to an agonizing death. The mood goes from loud panic to ominously quiet when the metal barriers cover the windows. On top of that, we have Edgar stumbling through the no man's land, initially unaware that he is moments from death. Without going overboard with breathing metaphors, his death sucks the air out of the room, the silent tick solidifying it. We haven't heard (or not heard) this since Chappelle died in season three, and this time as well intensifies the loss.

Edgar's death is a huge knock out to end the first half of the season. He was the everyman on the show. Edgar was never a super-cool badass like Jack is, but that's what made him relatable. Although he was heavy and he had a lisp, he was still a hero, saving countless people with his techie prowess. Unfortunately on 24, characters die frequently so the show can remain fresh, so Edgar is the latest casualty in an especially bloodthirsty season. Considering it is only episode 12, one has to ask what the second half is going to bring the show.
  • I love when the silent clock is ticking...

It means that something tragic happens. Edgar was so great, he would have done a beautiful duo with Chloe. His death is the high moment of the season. It was really emotionnal to see him run in the building, his fall was memorable I just felt the same way when Jack killed Ryan Chapelle. The silent clock was there too.

I get very attached to the characters in this series, I'm not sure why exactly. Take Edgar for example, he has been nothing but obnoxious since the day he walked into CTU (and is responsible for Carrie's death in this episode, that hasn't been forgotten!). Despite all this we love him anyway. Can someone then tell me why I was jumping around like a lunatic in celebration as CTU's staff were killed off one by one? Edgar's death was the high point of the series so far. This is what I love about 24 - they will do just about anything to anyone. The day Jack finally dies will be something special.

Write when said "no words" is a contracticion.

This episody is the best of all.

The fall of Edgar, his look was incredible.

The entire episody was made for that.

Chloe showed her eternal frozen face but with absolutely expression.

I need to repeat, the best of the best.

    Absolutely unbeliaveble.

If the produters can get more emotion, that will be the tv show of many centuries.

I had taped this episode of 24 to watch another show so i didnt know what happened. Then the next day me and my brother were wrestling and he says "I cant believe Edgar died." I thought he was lying because he does that alot so i ran here to check and... there it was. I immedietly went upstairs and watched it, arms wrapped around my legs with a pillow and blanket nearby. I watched the two whole hours and i must have cried for another hour, i thought it was one of the saddest things ive ever seen. I cannot believe he died, Edgar was one of my favorite characters. I also was hopping for him and Chloe to get together but now*sniff*that cant happen. It was a great episode, i just wished that Edgar didnt die.

Question - how come no one has noticed that Lynn's keycard has been used to enter the building and access computer control systems while he's been sitting in an interrogation room? If he's been removed from command and put in holding, why would they not have suspended his keycard access and any other access or priveleges he would have? You would think a government agency, especially one like CTU, would be a little more careful about their internal security.

I would say "nice to see Kim back" - but it's not. I was glad when I had heard initially that she wouldn't be in this season, and so am not really looking forward to more pursing of the lips and looking stunned.

The select pool of people who might die that we have to choose from for next week's episode is an interesting mix - anybody else hoping that the very nasty looking C. Thomas Howell is the one who buys it?

Other than that, a very good episode, high tension, lots of action, and great suspense.
