Now on to a brief reprieve from the Bauer Family (i.e. focus on the actual threat), and it's about the greatest reprieve you could hope for. Intense, outrageously violent, and just plain fun. The first act revolves around an exhilarating car chase—only instead of two cars, it's a car and a helicopter. Can it get better than THAT, dammit?!
Action-wise? Not really. Torture-wise? We got the goods! It's no secret that "24" makes a big spectacle out of torture, but… I don't have a rebuttal; all I can say is, graphic televised violence is fun, and as Fayed inflicts various injuries on Morris, the evilness (if no other aspect) of his character sure is fleshed out.
The goings-on in DC aren't too shabby either. Aside from the biggest pro (no Sandra), Assad arrives for a one-on-one with Wayne. And we see the full berth of Lennox's potential villainy as he agrees to cooperate with Reed Pollock's plan to remove Wayne from office. A coup? No, a [insert dull euphemism here]!
After three hours of showcasing Jack's family, this episode was needed. The hunt for the suitcase nukes progresses a step, and despite a certain Marwanian escape, we're still treated to action and tension that bring the hour up so many notches. If your pulse doesn't pound at least a little during the climactic countdown sequence (so what if we know Jack won't die?), stay away from me.

    Hourly Highlight:
Now that's what I call a fire drill! Huh? Huh?

Please can someone explain how the heck Fayid escaped??!!It made absolutly NO SENSE with all the cops around!! And the fact that he set the bomb to go off in THREE minutes....Fayid would have still been to close..when the explosion happened! There were other unlogibal "mistakes"

Another one was when the car went under the underpass....and they got away..geess where were the "other" helipotors etc!

24 is my favorite show and I've been very disappointed in some of the writing. So please can someone explain how the heck fayid got out when cops were at ALL the doors. Thanks
  • Exciting some parts, others slow..

Again, this episode had some contra versa - there were some really good action and emotions - Morris and that woman, she making her decision and then taking off. Morris not working with them first and the measure the they used to make him work - so he does programm it and now they have it - and three bombs.

Also, Jack and one of the nuke was good part but there some slow moments.. I most say I did not enjoy almost no storylines going on in White House.. the resigning and then not.. the president and all his talk - I do not know.. it is not working...
  • Jack leads CTU's search for Morris and Fayed. Hassad arrives in Washington DC for a meeting with President Palmer. Fayed uses brutal methods to get Morris to do the job he was brought to him for. Morris caves in and arms the remaining nukes.

I believe that DB Woodside does a good job in his role as Wayne Palmer (Dennis Haysbert was excellent as Wayne's brother. Woodside is just good). However, I feel that his dialouge is too preachy and contrived. Palmer's meeting with Fayed is a good example of that. That is something I have not seen in previous seasons with any of the actors who have played the President on this show. The highlight of this episode is the search for Morris and Fayed as well as the exciting conclusion to this episode. It's a flawed episode, but an exciting one also.
  • Jack does everything to find Morris...

This episode is as adventurous and thrilling as its predecessors...Jack goes in search of Darren McCarthy, the one that is holding Morris hostage...Morris tries to convince the girlfriend of Darren to release him... Unfortunately, she decides to dispose of McCarthy and take him to Fayed personally..Fayed tortures him and finally convinces him to build a device to program the bombs...Jack and CTU are there on time to avoid the bomb being detonated and manage to kill the team of Fayed, though Fayed escapes ... Jack saves Morris but he's amazed to find out that Morris really built a device that can be used...Tom wants to resign as advisor to the President, but renounces at the last minute...He does find out of an attempt to change leadership, and remove the President from office.
  • Please tell me we're not in for a reprise of season two!

One thing that's really starting to bug me with this show... ENOUGH of the torturing already! This is what, the fifth episode featuring torture this season? It's getting tiresome, and for someone like me, who can't stomach these scenes, it's making the show a whole of a lot less enjoyable. What they did to Morris was not only disgusting, but kind of counter productive. What use is he to them if they beat him to the point where he can't make their device anymore? Doesn't it seem like a bad idea to start hitting a guy with a bat when you need him to be able to sit up and use his arms?

Aside from the torture stuff, this episode had a big event take place after about 40 minutes, which is a good break from the usual format of the biggest stuff happening on the hour. I couldn't help but smile when Jack said "we've got a problem." It was a great way to do the scene, have Jack say something simple and effective. And it made me think of "Apollo 13", but that's another story.

Chloe was in her usual high form. I really like Chloe, she's the perfect "comic relief" for a show like this. She brings comedy without breaking tension or abandoning the format. I mean, you couldn't exactly have a Chandler Bing regurgitating one liners on this show. Chloe works brilliantly in her weird wacky ways, and since is the best at her job, which gives the writers a valid reason to keep her on. I almost laughed out loud when she told Buchannan to get away from her when she was trying to concentrate. I also have to say I liked Jack acknowledging her skills when he said he was glad to have her back. Jack and Chloe have become an odd kind of team, but I like the two working together and I want to see more of it. Now that Tony is gone he really needs Chloe to be the one person he can count on at CTU no matter what.

The White House storyline is not too good right now though. Doesn't this all seem very similar to season two? Nuclear threat, members of the cabinett want to replace President Palmer. Been there, done that. I like the fact that Tom has his loyalty and morals, even if he doesn't seem to be sticking by them completely - at least he's got some layers to his character. He doesn't really strike me as a bad guy, just as a misguided guy. But I really, really, really hope this storyline won't continue down the road it's heading. We've already had one Palmer being replaced while in office and that same Palmer killed. We don't need to see a rerun with Wayne Palmer.

Oh, and another thing I hope they're not going to do... turn Fayed into a new Marwan. It was annoying in season four when they kept ALMOST getting him all the friggin time. We've seen enough of that.

Let me first say that until about half way through, this episode was just run of the mill, find fished and kill him, but things perked up with McCarthy being shot out of the blue. Then there was the gentle persuasion on poor Morris, by mar fished. Have to admit that some of the torture sconces are pretty extreme. Then even though it was just for a few seconds, we saw Chloe having a moment of weakness with her feelings for Morris and the trouble he is in. so then it is on to what was going to be inevitable from the out come of president palmers decision not to back Lennox’s proposal. Some where downs the line Lennox was going to show his true colours, and he has with him deciding to meet his aid. To discuss what he had mentioned. Meanwhile jack gets a bonus back at the apartment, not only has fished got away, but he has left another bomb, and what does jack come up with a classic “we have a problem” understatement or what. And again the ever reliable Chloe steps into help, and the bomb is disabled, not the best episode but ok

CTU tracks down McCarthy's speeding sports car by air. Eventually they lost track of him. Morris is brought to an apartment where Fayad tortures him to submission. Lennox gets convinced by his aide that he needs to confront President Palmer. Wayne meets with Assad and pressures him to go live on tv and renounce terrorism to all the muslim communities across america. This episode is so exciting, the writers came up with an action packed episode that's full in content. We see twists along the way, this is what an action tv show must look like. I'm certainly waiting for more 24.

  • Awesome season ... but is one storyline a recycled rehash from Day 2?

    9.8
    "Superb"
As awesome as this season of "24" has been, as far as what's going on inside the white house goes, it just seems like the current storyline is a recycled and rehashed version of the Season 2 storyline involving David Palmer, with the difference being the president's administration plotting to do something far harsher than to simply remove Wayne Palmer from office.

Still, it's the same idea, different vice president. In fact, this whole season the white house subplot/story arch has been a rehash of Day 2's. Come on, the Chief of Staff Tom Lennox blackmailing Karen Hayes in the current season was no different from what the Chief of Staff Mike Novich did to keep Lynne Kresge off his back. Same purpose, different methods.

Still, the current season so far beats out every one of the 5 before it, so no one can really complain. It more than makes up for that atrocious, appalling season of television that was Day 3. Ugh.

Plot: Tom contemplates his resignation after the President rejects his ideas, but finds a new path to pure evil. Morris is brutally tortured into giving Fayid the capability to arm all the nukes. Jack’s father takes desperate moves to cover his tracks. Jack saves Morris and disarms a nuke in his spare time.

We are treated to two, back to back, hours tonight. I have no idea why there are two episodes on tonight and I don’t really care. Perhaps the producers want to recover some street cred after last weeks somewhat disappoint fair. Of course, weak for 24 is like really, umm, freaking awesome for a normal show. Sorry, analogies have never been my forte. Tom needs to get his come upens! After the President refuses to go along with his wanton and completely ineffective racist plans, he decides to resign. Unfortunately, his clingy advisor has other plans in mind. Why is Tom the only advisor with his own lackey? This guy must find it hard to breath with his head shoved so far up Tom’s ass. The political tool, (I won’t dignify him with a name), reveals that he is involved in the conspiracy to kill Palmer. In order to keep Tom from resigning, he must subtly reveal the intricacies of the plan. He might as well have drawn a picture of himself shooting Palmer in the head, for all the subtly he managed to command! At first Tom is horrified but than he realizes what he is truly capable of; the total subjugation of the Muslim race!!! MUAHAHA

McCarthy’s blond bimbo decides to stand up for herself. She is a self respecting woman, that doesn’t need to just get by on her looks and sleep her way into money. Instead, she shoots McCarthy and decides to take Morris in for the full cash reward. It is the American way. Why do thieves always work with other criminals? It makes absolutely no sense. Everyone ties up loose ends and the hot blond chick, politely asking for her seven million dollars is a freaking lose end if I ever saw one! Naturally Fayid shoots her and then begins his torture of Morris.

Being British, Morris immediately capitulates. Rupert Murdock must have some deal with the FCC because that torture scene was pretty gruesome even for Fox. Sexually explicit content and fowl language I have come to expect, but drilling through someone’s bone is a tad much for the eight o’clock time slot.

Jack tracks Fayid down and attacks his hideout but loses him in the obligatory shoot out. Morris admits that he broke, but his blubbering depression will have to wait. Right now, Jack has only minutes to diffuse a nuke. Luckily, Chloe is ready to talk Jack threw it and he makes short work of the bomb with his trusty Phillips screw driver. You should see what the guy can do with a spork!

After disarming the nuke, Jack follows up on a lead from his brother’s wife. Marylyn followed Graham once to a meeting with a bunch of Russians and Jack thinks it could be the ones that sold the nukes in the first place. Jack’s father needs to cover up his tracks so he orders Marylyn to send Jack into a trap under the threat of killing his grandson. Didn’t this guy build this company all for his family’s future? Not much point if he kills them all, is there?

Parting Thought: Jack’s real son is bullet proof. Awaken his rage, Gramps! www.lifereviewed.com
  • Overall, this episode was another disappointment, largely because another intriguing layer of the story introduced in the season premiere was undermined.

    6.0
    "Fair"
The episode begins with the attempt to rescue Morris from McCarthy. This leads into a ten minute chase sequence that leaves Morris in the hands of a throw-away character trying to make a buck. As ludicrous as it sounds, it’s actually rather amusing. Morris looks supremely pissed that he’s been abducted by people working out of half-baked self-interest.

One gets the feeling that the writers made Morris intensely annoying at the beginning of the season so that he could be rendered more heroic at some point later in the season. After all, how likely was it that Morris would put up resistance when it counted, when he seemed so mercenary? It took a lot for him to give up the goods. Then again, when the time came, he seemed a bit too capable. If he wasn’t an expert on those systems, how could he simply program the device in a matter of minutes? And why wouldn’t he try to sabotage the device and buy time?

Just when it appeared that the drama at CTU would be over, Chloe is relieved for apparent lack of judgment and cooperation. Clearly none of these people remember working with Chloe before. When hasn’t she been annoyed with interference and questions about her judgment? And of course, it appears that Milo is unable to provide Jack with perfect tech support. Hasn’t everyone learned to trust Chloe by now? That’s two people CTU should always listen to: Jack Bauer and Chloe O’Brian.

With a little technobabble at the right time, Chloe gets Jack the right information. This, of course, is designed to give Fayed more than enough time to torture Morris. That was certainly creative use for a power drill! Did it ever occur to Fayed that Morris might need to use fine motor control to serve his purpose? It’s hard to believe that such a large drill bit would cause relatively minor damage, but there we are.

After his decision to forgo Tom’s plan for stringent changes to national security policy, Wayne seems rather clueless about the likely consequences. If he knew Tom so well from the campaign days, how could he miss the fact that Tom is a whiny pain in the ass. More to the point, he’s another figurehead for a conspiracy at the highest levels of government. After the Logan administration, wouldn’t some additional measures be put into place to prevent anything like that from happening again?

The problem, of course, is that it destroys the concept of a civil liberty/national security debate, which was one of the more intriguing elements of the premiere. At this point, forces are gathering to eliminate a president who stands in the way of massive changes to national security policy, including measures that would be illegal under nearly every circumstance. It would have been far better for the national security measures to be questioned on their own merits, rather than the methods of those supporting the measures.

This episode marks the return of Assad to the series, after a brief but palpable absence. The meeting between Wayne and Assad may not be as entertaining as the Assad/Jack partnership, but it still had its moments. Wayne makes his intentions very clear, and it helps to clarify Assad’s position. It brings more question to Assad’s endgame, which was somewhat hazy in the first place. This was one of the highlights of the episode.

The purpose of the episode, of course, was to get Jack in a room with an armed suitcase nuke. The rest of the episode was a means to that end, and unfortunately, it was relatively threadbare as a result. Was anyone under the impression that Jack would fail to disarm the bomb? The final act was left without a shred of tension as a result.

This had all the standard features of a “24” episode, but it simply wasn’t very satisfying. As the season marches on, a lot of the layers featured in the premiere are stripping away, and the loss of substance is alarmingly noticeable.

I just watched this episode last night and it was everything i expected it to be.This episode was truly a series classic, and anyone who is a fan of 24 and didn't like this episode, well, isn't really a fan of 24.I didn't expect for Rita to kill McCarthy, or that Lennox's goons plan to kill the president, but then again it is 24, it was sick when Fayed took the power drill to Morris's arm.I always love when 24 has a two hour special, and this is only the second season that I've watched from the very beginning, actually the first, i missed the first few episodes of season five.Season six is really turning out to be something special.later.

Jack and the analysts at CTU frantically search for Fayed, who tortures a captive Morris until he agrees to help him reprogram the nukes.

A couple of words for this one: Fan. Tastic.

Last episode, I predicted that perhaps I would enjoy the show more once Graem was gone. And I did. This episode had all of the elements that make a classic episode of 24.

You had the political intrigue with Lennox and this new player. To be honest I care about this storyline the least of any of them, but it wasn't -completely- boring to watch.

In this episode we had Jack totally focused on finding Morris, which means he didn't have time to deal with family BS. Don't get me wrong - I love the personal stories, because without it you have nothing but cardboard cutouts. But after three episodes or so of being pounded with all of this "omg evil Bauer family" stuff, I was pretty tired of it (not that I was thrilled at the notion of it at the beginning). I'm glad it was absent in this episode, even though I know it'll back - but I'm counting on the fact that it'll be a heck of a lot more interesting without Graem around.

I also predicted that perhaps I wouldn't feel so indifferent about Morris anymore, and I was right. I actually enjoyed him in this episode (when he wasn't being tortured) and felt for him. A power drill in the shoulder? Brutal.

I do have one nitpick here - but it's not really specifically pertaining to this episode, moreso with the way this season has been handled so far. In the first few episodes, we saw Jack struggling with the fact that he'd spent nearly two years being tortured in a Chinese prison and dealing with being thrown into the deep end of the pool so soon after being released. That seems to have disappeared in recent episodes. I know that the nuclear detonation was supposed to "snap Jack back," but it doesn't seem like it would be that easy. In the early hours of the season, he struggled with interrogating suspects in the usual Jack Bauer manner, and now he's back into it so much that he's torturing family members. I don't buy it. The writers had an interesting opportunity for Jack - for him to have to struggle to find other ways to coerce suspects since he could no longer rely on his trusty friend Mr. Torture. I was really hoping that Jack's psychological issues would play a major role this season, but it seems to have taken an extreme backseat to the family drama; now, it just another season of 24. I really hope that this is an issue later on in the season, because it seems like such a wasted opportunity simply to forget it after four episodes.

I guess we'll see what happens, eh?

44tvfan - first, from the time that the team first went into the apartment (approx 1:48pm) until Chloe first mentioned 3 minutes left (approx 1:56 pm) was 7-8 minutes... plus 3 minutes would make it 10 - which would be enough for Fayid to get down the escape route, to the basement and possibly out thru the sewer - thus avoiding all the people surrounding the building on ground level. Then Fayid had a helicopter nearby so he would be well out of reach of the bomb... and besides, he completely expected it to be disarmed if you listen to him speak to the russian
  • Well Well I dare say 24 is back on track and the excitement doesn't let up one bit.

I'm definitely glad to say I was wrong about where I thought things were heading with the show. This episode definitely launched us into what should be an exciting ride the rest of the way this season on 24. Some really great scenes with Morris being kidnapped and the girl turning on McCarthy only to have it blow up in her face. Some really great vintage Jack tracking them down and finding Fayed's safehouse. However once again he escapes in the knick of time after torturing Morris into making the suitcases usable. He leaves one behind leading to a very thrilling detonation by Jack. In other matters on the show my jaw nearly dropped to the floor when i realized it appears that Reed and some mystery guy are trying to coherse Lennox into coming on board with their agenda to possibly kill or kidnap the president. Also some good scenes with between The President and Hassad. Definitely a very exciting episode.

Well done action sequences during the raid on the apartment where the bomb was being armed; though the last minute disarming was rather predictable (Bauer was not going to die or the show is over) the rest of the episode made up for that.

There are still 3 bombs out there so theres plenty of suspense to keep the season moving along. Apparently the mad Russian has missiles to deliver the remaining bombs. Will they set off at least one more bomb? If they do will Palmer retaliate? If so how? If not? What would be his future?

Episode wasnt stellar but still excellent.

This episode was everything that one would expect it to be with only a minor flaw that I thought should have been fixed. The assassination attempt that Lennox and his advisor are planning against the president is kind of dissapointing, I was hoping we could go one year without a flaw in the white house. I think that the storyline with them is picking up though and should get more exciting in the episodes to come.

There was a lot of Jack Bauer in this episode, which is always a good thing. I enjoyed watching the infultration attempt be Jack to try and catch Fayid and I thought the escape plan Fayid used was a well written one that I could understand with cops everywhwere in the street.

The only problem I had with the episode was the lack of Jacks father. He didnt show up at CTU or anywhere of importance in an hour? I know he said he was going to go to the morgue with his son, but we should have gotten a clip of him or something at some point during the episode....Fantastic episode, loved it
