This is the story of Andres Escobar, who was the captain of the Colombian national soccer team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Colombia had the best team on earth. Andres accidentally scored an own goal, sending them home. Days later, he was murdered.moreless
This is an incredible story, but not in a happy way. In a devastatingly sad way. It is extremely interesting and informative for the first hour and a half or so, which is about the rise and domination of Colombian international soccer, and the drug lords that financed it, the main one being Pablo Escobar. The players were just players, they didn't participate in any criminal activity whatsoever. The last half hour or so, is about the tragic murder of Andres Escobar, and the legacy he left behind. It also tells about what happened to Colombian soccer after Andres Escobar's death, and how it fell apart. It is without a doubt, the best documentary I have ever seen.moreless
The first 30 for 30 movie I have watched, and after seeing this I may need to check out some more.
The first 40 minutes of this documentary was about as well-done as possible. They really put over how tragic the state of Columbia was with the high murder rate and drug money paying soccer players. They showed how the one positive the country had was its soccer team. And they talked about Pablo Escobar, and had a great interview with his former accomplice from his jail cell. Then the second half happened. They rambled on, they derived from the script and things just got boring. The ending really put over how tragic Andres Escobar's death was, but that did not excuse the 20 minutes of rambling. If this was a 90 minute movie it would have been perfect.moreless
