  • The cougar story line was a bit lame, but the war references used by Jack to justify "helping" Tracy's little league team of underprivileged boys were tight.

The only story line worth mentioning is Tracy's with the underprivileged little league team. Jack responds characteristically by trying to take over and improve the team. The war motif was consistent, from Jack's explanation for why he had to "help" the team, to the boys' toppling of the Jefferson Davis statue, to the "ungrateful" boys' turning on Jack and Kenneth and chasing them off the field. Clearly the writers embedded their (and the county's?) evaluation of how the Bush Administration sold the U.S. people on the war in Iraq in 2003 and the apparent failure of the U.S. mission. Virtually all of Jack's lines in relation to this storyline were based on actual words of, or at least the logic used by, Bush Administration official to justify embarking on the war and perpetuating it. Even a brief cameo of Jack as MacArthur made reference to Bush's apparent disillusionment of how he will be remembered in history.
