Liz and some of the characters watch/discuss the 1982 film Tootsie and mention it's frequently used in film studies books as a good example of structure. In the film an actor disguises himself as woman to get a part. He subsequently falls in love, but can't act on it while he still has the job.
Liz faces a similar situation as she tries to get a new assignment with Jack, while also pursuing a relationship with Floyd. In the end, she loses the job but gets the guy, mirroring the film.
