I've really enjoyed this season of 30 Rock, much more than last season so far, and tonight's episode was pretty good. Definitely not my favorite, but certainly a fair reminder that 30 Rock is a comedic force to be reckoned with.
The plot is pretty simple by 30 Rock standards: Jack is forced by Avery to stop mentoring Liz, because Avery's hormones are making her jealous. Liz, on the other hand, is struggling with her father, ol' Dick Lemon, who seems to be on the cusp of splitting up with his wife. Liz struggles to remedy the situation while Jack struggles to live life without someone to mentor.
There are other things going on, but they really don't seem all that important in the grand scheme of things. For instance, Tracy learns that NBC makes obituaries ahead of time for famous people and he realizes that his obituary makes him look like an idiot, so he decides to try and do something to change this.. meanwhile, Jenna is mad that she doesn't even have an obituary and tries to become more famous.
For me, this was a middle-of-the-line episode. There have been much better this season, and for me, this may have been one of the weaker ones so far. But that doesn't mean it wasn't funny. Tracy's lines, as usual, were hilarious, and I really enjoyed Liz's little plot to prove to her father that he's crazy. There were a lot of little moments that I liked.
Not a bad episode of the show, but not the best either.
