  • Most overrated show on TV.

    "Abysmal"
I gave this show a try because I was able to stream it on Netflix. However I regret wasting my time watching this garbage. Tina Fey should be more like Liz Lemon and stay behind the scenes because she is a terrible lead. She's not funny and she has no charisma. Alec Baldwin is the only character that I found somewhat humorous. Tracy Morgan can be funny at times but usually is obnoxious. I suggest watching Parks & Recreation instead. It's a much stronger show with a better ensemble cast. Hell even The Office which has gone completely downhill is better than this show.
  • Lively and genuinely funny show!

30 Rock...now this is more like it! Lively, genuinely funny bits that really make you wonder (and laugh) about what goes on behind the scenes of the network of your choice. They couldn't have done better than castingAlec Baldwin and Tina Fey as the headline gigglemeisters for this series, and it's good to see Lorne Michaels in the saddle as executive producer, he hasn't lost his stuff! 30 Rock is quite refreshing for me, after at times feeling as though I'm drowning in a sea of prime time mediocrity. If you letyour youngerkids watch along with you, good luck trying to explain what mommie and daddy find so funny about some of the bits...

  • Great show but appendix characters are being overused

    9.5
    "Superb"
I love 30 Rock! It's the only show I've found to adequately replace the void left by Arrested Development. And I never would have predicted how much Alec Baldwin has made me laugh, what a great comedy actor! But I've noticed some recent criticisms and I have to say that while I don't agree with most, there are 'appendix' (unnecessary) characters that are in danger of ruining this show.

Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Jane Krakowski & Jack McBrayer - these guys are the only regular cast members I am enjoying watching anymore. I don't know what's happened to Tracy Jordan. Nobody made me laugh *more* than this guy in the first season. Now I am tempted to reach for the remote to speed past any of his scenes. What makes this show funny (and shows like Arrested Development, The Office) is anticipating the reactions from characters we know have hangups or vulnerabilities. I think this is why Tracy doesn't work - he has none.

And I feel equally irritated by most of the backup cast (Pete, Toofer, Lutz etc) who seem to be getting more attention recently than is befitting a *backup* cast. I remember wondering in the earlier seasons why these guys even made it to the front credits as they were in it so little, but this didn't bother me. It does bother me now however that they are getting more air time because I have no interest in hearing more than a line or two from them in each episode. The blonde 'bimbo' Cerie for example is still fun because she is given a line or two per episode that is usually funny and relevant. The others should have no place in more than 1 minute of each 20-min episode but we're seeing more and more and I'm wondering why. Are the actors demanding it and the writers complying? Sorry - too many cooks spoil the broth and I only want the few cooks that make the best food - the others are just waiters - necessary but only in small doses. Recurring characters like Elaine Stritch, Will Arnett and my new fave Ken Howard (as Hank) follow this same principle and it works. Don't make us resent these guys who never got in our face before!

My other favourite comedy show The Office seems to be taking the opposite approach. It's a very dicey time right now with frontman Steve Carell just gone and I waited to see them head down the same route as 30 Rock and start dragging forward the backups but I was pleased to see they seem to be filling the void instead with recurring/guest cast stars. (Things aren't perfect in Scranton but on this one issue they've done better than 30 Rock).

Anyway, love 30 Rock, and can't wait to see more of Jack and his beloved Lemon, Jenna & Kenneth and their backup cast next season! :-)
  • I love the way this show feels.

The only thing I don't like about this show is that I didn't get into watching it sooner.

I've only seen about 9 or so episodes but from the first time I sat down and actually watched it I was hooked.

All the characters are very well written and have delightfully odd personality's that get them into brilliantly wacky situations.

It holds my attention and I laugh every time I watch it (and I don't laugh at much).

The high quality way this show is filmed also makes me like it that much more..

I highly recommend this show for anyone who enjoys comedy.

This show is soooooo funny!!!!!!! When i first heard Tina was leaving SNL i was so sad then i heard the reason so she could do her own sitcom based on her experiences on SNL i was just over the moon seeing her writing skills from Mean Girls. The cast is perfect Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin give hilarious performances. The shows guest stars are pretty god damn good. Will Arnett is such a funny guest spots! i want him as a regular also i wud love Amy Poehler to guest star! The show is just all round funny and farrrrrrrrrrr better than studio 60 ever was!
  • A wonderfully funny insiders look into TV production

    10
    "Perfect"
Brilliant - simply brilliant. The story revolves around a 30 something tv executive and the hilarious goings-on at the NBC Universal studios in New York. Liz Lemon's life is comic genius and Alec Baldwin adds an air to the show that is dynamic and energetic.

When Tracy Jordan joins TGS mandess ensues as this crazy actor brings a little bit of hollywood to nbc.

The support cast are sometimes forgotten and Jenna Moroneys character seems under-utilized but on the whole you are left satisfied and even comically educated by the performances of the two main leads.

Add this one to the list folks.
  • my one "glitch" with 30 rock or any other show/movie written by witty people like tina fey is that the characters' characters (chew on that for a while) are sometimes compromised.

    9.0
    "Superb"
there is a tendency for lines to sound like they're all coming from the same person (because they are) & the different actors are just voicing them. but that's just the thing: they're not supposed to be that way. it's like that time when tony soprano's kazakh cumare irina answered the phone & asked carm--in her exotic kazakh accent, where carm thinks she is in "the pecking order". & i was like, whattttt cumares never know about pecking ordersss.. kazakh cumares, no less........ in fact there's probably a law forbidding them from finding out what a pecking order is... at least there should be.... because it's just WRONG, all of it!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!11!1! make the voices stop!!!!!!!!1!11 end...scene

30rock is funny, thanks to SNL's tina fey. the main character, liz lemon, is all too relateable...from when i was 19 & vegan & writing articles for a danish zine & almost thought i was a feminist until i was asked to define it. then there's her lack of luck (try saying it fast many times) in love. *sighs* :)

it wouldn't be complete without the gang of stereotypes: twofer (2 for 1--black + ivy leaguer)...the aging blond actress...the bimbo...the greasy, intelligent slacker...the loud black guy... the married bald guy... the regular guy... the simpleton that's actually psycho...... & of course, alec baldwin.

random scenes i remember from the show: liz lemon...on the floor eating while wearing her wedding dress, eating a sundae while walking at like 2mph on the treadmill, dating a guy who turns out to be a relative, dating jon hamm (d_mn), trying to do hip hop aero... it's good. watch it.
  • Good idea - bad show. It just never gets very funy. Tracy Morgan really drags it down - he's no Eddie Murphy.

One would think that a recent veteran of a 30 year old TV show could come up with a much better and way funnier behind-the-scenes take on an American TV institution called Saturday Night Live.

Tina Fey is a bright perky woman but unfortunately, this show never rises above one of its most annoying characters - Tracy Morgan. There is way too much attention paid him when there is such a great mix of other characters who barely get any screen time.

Even Baldwin - who I generally don't like - is well cast and funny as the network suit but unless they do a major overhaul before the second season, this one is not going to last.
  • Cancel this show!.

I dislike and despise this show at the same time. She has very plain personality even her funniest comments are not funny. She out of proportion to in size Alec Baldwin. Tina Fey has very dry humor and she was not funny in this show at all. Tina Fey was very funny in Saturday Night live but I think she should stick to live comedy shows.
  • I really don't see how this is still on the air.

    1.0
    "Abysmal"
I have to say, I watched 2 episodes of this show (not the first two, just a few random ones) and I find it completely idiotic and not funny at all. For one thing, 2 shows come out by the same network with the same premise (behind the scenes at a SNL-type show), 30 Rock and Studio 60. 30 Rock trys too hard to be funny and ends up completely failing, while Studio 60 is actually quite hilarious. I can't even fathom why this show is still on the air and Studio 60 was canceled. The acting is pretty bad in this, and the humor is in no way even remotely funny.
  • Shame!

I can not agree with a lot of the reviews for this show. I watched half of the first season and just gave up at the end! This show is stupid comedy not really funny! Tracy Jordan acts like he wants to be Eddie Murphy but falls way short with more amusement at his stupidty than his real jokes. Baldwin plays the suit really well better than I expected but Tina Fey, with her experience in SNL could and should have done a lot better. Sorry people but I could not beleive this got nominated for an Emmy, NBC has to come up with something better than this! It is as bad as the Girlie Show itself!
  • Boy, this show was picked to continue rather than the excellent "Studio 60". It just proves how lowbrow viewers are today, and how idiotic studio executives are. Sigh.

I was extremely sad to see "Studio 60" cancelled. It had great acting and direction, and extraordinarily excellent writing.

Now I read that it was cancelled in favor of "30 Rock", so I went to iTunes and bought the first 3 episodes. What a load of dog droppings it is!

I cannot believe that Americans have now become so intensely stupid as to prefer "30 Rock" over "Studio 60", and the executives' decision to push the limits (at the bottom edge) as well.

In watching these episode, myself (54 yrs from Memphis), my wife (50 and English) and my son (15) had NOT ONE laugh during the whole three episodes. There were a around 10 "mild smiles" but nothing else. With such a wide range of tastes in our family, to disappoint all of us is a real accomplishment.

No excitement, no fine writing to admire, lacklustre acting, stereotypes galore, and the Same Old Thing re-packaged once again.

Well, if you want fine television, you can bet that 99% of what's on in the US is going to disappoint you.

"30 Rock" sinks like a stone. (I understand Baldwin wants out as well - no surprise there!)
  • Hard to watch!

I find this show very hard to watch. I always watch the office and then I think to myself okay well maybe I will watch 30 rock because it is winning all of these awards and apparently it is really funny. Everytime I watch it I turn it off only 5 minutes getting into it. It's really unfunny. I don't know why people think it is so good! I can't believe Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are winning all of these awards, especially over like David Duchovny! It's insane. I really don't think I am missing out on anything! It's painful to watch.
  • Two thumbs up for this great sitcom project!

Two thumbs up for this great sitcom project! No matter how screwed up you are, you'll always find a character who is even worse off than you in at least one respect. Given the times we live in, it's safe to say that's a pretty remarkable achievement. So, if you're looking for a relaxing little show to make you smile and even laugh at times, in which you'll see people handling ordinary matters in extraordinary ways or if you just want to remind/convince yourself that Alec Baldwin can also do good comedy, watch 30Rock. You most certainly won't be disappointed!
  • Still just about the funniest show on t.v. - but agree, not as funny as it used to be.

    "Great"
Thanks to the episodes penned by head writer, Tina Fey, 30 Rock was an award winning, truly funny, adult oriented, comedy program. It's still better than most other shows that are labeled sit-coms - just not as funny this season as it was, in others. Some of the characters, in my opinion, have become caricatures; most notably, Tracy Morgan as Tracy Jordan. He was never my favorite on the program, but thanks to some excellent scripts, he made me laugh. Lately, not so much. I'm glad Danny re-appeared in yesterday's episode; I've enjoyed every moment he's been on the air - from the time he was hired (to shake up Jenna and Tracy) to the present. That's all for now - now that the show has returned from hiatus, will be watching for a return to the "funny."

  • People don't like this show, they LOVE it. However, the humour can be too 'out there' for some people. If you want straight-up observational comedy, I'd go elsewhere but if you want something fresh and original with great comic acting, 30 rock has it all!

    10
    "Perfect"
I absolutely love this show. Having said that, it can be incredibly hard to explain why I love it so much to someone who either hasn't seen it, or someone who has seen a little of it but doesn't really get it. Comedy is a strange beast-you generally get a feeling for whether you like it or not- you don't mull it over and then specifically decide either way. I will try to explain anyway!

30 rock, for me, is sharp, witty, has excellent comic acting (particularly Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey) and a kind of bizarre humour that serves as a perfect sort of escapism (for me). This is no observational comedy about real writers and actors on SNL. It is more character driven, using the creative license that the 'show within a show' lends to the plotlines. In my opinion, Alec and Tina's characters have some of the best on-screen chemistry I have ever seen and it is worth watching even if those are the only scenes you are interested in. I think one of the main reasons I like the show so much is that I identify with Tina Fey's character, Liz Lemon. That is to say that she is alternately strong/weak, optimistic/cynical and generally living in her own world with a clear idea of her values, not to mention the utmost regard for food and Star Wars(don't worry anti-nerds you won't notice the references so don't be put off)! She says a lot of things that -although I might not say them out loud- are exactly what I would think in the same situation.

On the whole, if you love it- great! If not, then I'm not going to argue with you but I do recommend trying it because all the people I know who like it LOVE it, so it's worth a shot, I think. Otherwise, don't worry about the 'weird' and go try something else. A good comedy is what everybody should have in their life and 30 rock is the comedy for me.
  • Gone off the boil

    5.2
    "Mediocre"
The first season had me hooked, but every subsequent episode of the second series makes me questioned why i watch this show. The plots are getting outlandish, we barely get more than the main characters squeezed into the episode and Tracy Morgan has been turned in to a joke. The only solution I see is to go back to basics, all the characters, the show itself and crises. Rather than making it the Tina fey and Alec Baldwin show. This show looked like a funny snappier Studio 60 but that was a far superior show and it's a crying shame it din't make it past the first season, much better writing and stories even if a little elitist
  • was it the fact that i had been awake for 24 hours when i first saw the show or was this show really the worst thing i have every seen?

    6.0
    "Fair"
i generally give television programs a fighting chance beyond the pilot but damn i could not even find a single thing mildly interesting about this show so far. despite only being 10 minutes into the second episode of the first season i am going to go ahead and rush to judgment and say this show sucks. ok, sure tina is very cute (when she is wearing glasses) and tracy is going to be the only funny part in the show (and do that well i am sure). i will still give it a chance since i want to believe this will make me laugh eventually but they better get on with the laugh laugh. how in the hell did this show make it and Studio 60 failed? Studio 60 captivated me very quickly yet this has left me wondering what it would be like to be deaf. how does 30 rock portray any aspects of producing a live tv show? sure i do not know ... whatever i am wasting my time bashing this crap
  • I don't know what everyone loves about this show.

    "Bad"
I so hate this show it's not that funny, it's not even that intresting the whole show has a bad vibe about, Tina fey seems forced and overly scripted and Alec Baldwin just gives off this incredibly disgusting sleazy energy i like the other cast members but i just feel this showw is too unoriginal too unfunny, and just plain dumb, i have no idea of what every ones attraction is to the show half the people who say they love it i bet haven't even watched and are just trying to seem cool and fit, i mean how many emmy's has the show stolen from other deserving show's.
  • Its not higly addictive, not a guility pleasure, not something everyone can absorb but if you're patience it could be all thoese things!!.soon enough.

i'm very confused about this show.I brought all the dvds for season 1 some days ago and i had just watched it win emmys and all theses awards for great acting, comedy and god knows what and i heard about the star cast with all these big names and Alan and Tina and i thought this is going to be awesomely funny....well it wasnt. I get hooked on tv shows real fast but this one its still hard for me to absorb...its funny but its not very ( i dont know what the word is)...impressive maybe i was expecting more...but i guess it gets better and better as they go...cause i'ave only seen 5 episodes and every review says its like a marriage it gets better as you go so i'm hoping here it does its magic for me..and strangely if it does i wouldn't be surprised.!!....cause I'm still expecting to be won over although its been a disappointment till now….nothing like the classic friends or Seinfeld imagined.!!
  • One of the funniest shows on television

Crazy antics, out of control characters and great one liners, this show has it all. The characters in 30 rock are hilarious and always doing weird stuff. Liz lemon is the one who has to keep everything together but has no personal life. Jack Donagey(sorry im sure i spelled it wrong.) Is very cynical and concided. Jeana Maroney is one of my favorites because shes real dramatic and the b**** loves to cause scenes. Tracey (who was obviously type casted) who funny and adds somethign special to the show. Overall its very funny and it deserves the success its recieveing, go Tina Fey.

I'm a typical child of television. My parents left it as my babysitter as a child, and I still enjoy it on a daily basis. The past several years have been a searing decline in television with all the "reality" garbage. The saving grace in my little world has been 30 Rock. I fell in love with Tina Fey on SNL, and naturally followed her to this show. Adoring her at all costs, I watched the show from day one, wanting her to succeed. Lo and behold my wishes didn't need to be answered, because this is one great show. It's funny, witty and brilliantly written. The cast is superb, and Tina is perfect in every way. Now the only mystery is how junk like American Idol and Deal or No Deal have more viewers than this high quality show. It's the inevitable dumbing down of America, unfortunately.
  • NBC has a great tradition in producing great comedies, this is another fine example.

    9.9
    "Superb"
Traditionally there are two comedy shows on television, The well made sitcom like Frasier and Seinfeld. The not so well made sitcom like My Two Dads.

30 Rock has started a new category. For me this show is better than all others, but he question is why? Can it be that this show has more main characters than other shows? Or that the show shoots outdoors instead of all cardboard made sets? Or maybe it is that the walk to the edges of what is normally shown on TV in the USA?

I think it is all off the above. The cast is great, the scripts are great, and best of all, the show is different than all others.

For the near future, I hope that all comedy writers watch this show and aim to do even better, than there is a lot to enjoy.
  • This show deserves all the praise it gets

I have only seen the first season so far but I think that the season was probably the funniest season I have seen for a sitcom. I'm going to buy season 2 right away the show is funny from start to finish. The cast is excellent Alec Baldwin is awesome as Jack Donaghy, he pulls off the role with ease. Tina Fey as Liz Lemon is equally as good. In fact the whole cast are just great. This show is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Arrested Development and SNL. This show deserves all the praise it gets.
  • I say good, but is highly overrated

    8.0

30 Rock is a show about a group of stars making an sketch show (or something like that...

30 Rock is a good show, funny, well acted and well written. But is highly overrated for me. Its not as great as people say, and I dont think it deserved the Emmy for Best Comedy (no ofense). Its funny, but not that funny and has many bad jokes. But dont get me wrong, I do like the show, its pretty funny and good and well acted and written, I just think that its highly overrated (as Ive said like a thousand times already). Sorry to anyone who love the show, its just not that good. But is still pretty good though.
  • The Trials and Tribulations of Liz Lemon will leave you Rolling on the Floor

    10
    "Perfect"
30 Rock is Easily the Funniest show currently on TV, and one of the funniest of all time. A must watch for anyone who likes to laugh, 30 Rock is a backstage show that follows Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), the head writer of TGS, a sketch comedy produced and filmed in 30 Rockefeller Center, and the constant pandamonioum that the show wrecks on her Proffessional and Personal life. First off she must deal with her lead cast, the clinacly insane former movie star Tracy Jordan (Tracey Morgan), and the neurotic and dim-witted Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski). Then their is her writing staff, notably the Slob Frank (Judah Friedland). Of course she can always find support from her friend and Producer Pete (Scott Adsit) and sometimes from her Boss Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin). She also may recieve a more often than not unwanted helping hand from Kenneth (Jack Parcil) the overeager NBC Page.

With each episode funnier than the last and a cast one of the most talented and funniest cast ever to be on TV, 30 Rock is setting the standard for the future of television comedy and will easily make it hard for even the most cynical person not to crack a smile for even one moment.
  • 30 Rock rocks!

    "Superb"
30 rock episodes really do stand the test of time. I watch old ones from past seasons and I still think they're funny. I have to say this though...I miss the old Liz Lemon; the woman who gulps wine while she's on the treadmill, the woman who uses a $4,000 ham napkin a.k.a. wedding dress, the woman who scowls and jams to Chamillionaire and eats a pop tart she found on the floor. Sure, the Liz Lemon now is more confident since she has a book out and seems to be really successful, but singing about cheesy blasters freaks me out a bit. To me, she's becoming less of a person I can relate to and veering more towards the crazy. Crazy eyes!
  • Not since Arrested Development has a show made me laugh so much.

    10
    "Perfect"
The Office may be my favorite show, but 30 Rock is the funniest show on air. There hasn't been a show this quick-witted and ridiculous since Arrested Development. The writers know how to write for the characters, so that each one has their own brand of funny. For me, that's what makes the show. Liz has her desperate, no-quite-normal funny; Jack has his know-it-all, unapologetic funny; etc. The performances and comedic timings of all of the cast members are impeccable as well: Jane Krakowski and Tracy Morgan are simply superb with their zaney characters. And don't even get me started on Kenneth - often, he has the funniest lines in the whole show. To sum it all up, you just can't go wrong with a show that has characters like 30 Rock has.
  • A show about making a weekly variety show similar to SNL. Created by Tina Fey and the title is a reference to where SNL is tapped, 30 Rockefeller center.

This is currently the best comedy on TV if you are not watching it, you should be. Tina Fey is great as usual, but Alec Baldwin is the best thing on this show. He has tremendous comic timing and the writing for him it great. Tracy Morgan is also very very funny, him and his entourage are great. The show also have a lot of fun guest stars that fit into the show nicely, so far they have had Jerry Seinfeld and Steve Martin just to name a few. The show is so well made and I hope it is on for a long time.
