A comment from Mary makes Dick realize that he and his family are not fitting in as well as they hoped to, so they set out to become completely average. As usual, they go too far. They move to a nondescript apartment complex, dress like a perpetual Gap ad, and find excitement by playing Jenga and going out for frozen yogurt. On a date, Dick orders the "most average champagne."
Tommy and Harry work to assemble a bookcase, and Sally becomes the champion of the Tenants' Association. Dick is happy until he realizes that now Mary thinks he's boring. She is excited to meet the eccentric Professor Neesam (John Cleese), and Dick realizes that homogenization makes people less human. He wants to break the lease and go back to Mrs. Dubcek's. Harry and Tommy support his decision to give up their new, bland life, but Sally refuses to leave. They retaliate by breaking enough rules to get their family kicked out, and realize in the end that "those people who weren't weird were so...weird."
