At Los Alamos a military project to develop a neutron bomb is underway as Frank, Olga, and Hooter travel to Boulder, CO to examine chrononaut medical records at an underground military base. The project goes awry, vaporizing everyone on Earth except the three Backstep members and their military host, Major Jones, because they're far enough underground. The pulse also destroys microchips and Hooter is suffering the effects of exposure – they rig an older car without microchips and head for Backstep, where the sphere is shielded. On their trip Frank takes a spill on his motorcycle – Hooter notices that the brake line was cut and suspects Jones. Jones further sabotages their trip as he goes nuts, and doesn't believe them when they tell him about Backstep. Hooter kills Jones and, going insane from the radiation poisoning, prepares to kill Frank and be Adam to Olga's Eve.

With the seven day window running out, the three trek through the desert and get to Backstep – it still has power and a crazed Hooter tries to destroy the reactor core. Olga distracts him long enough for Frank to get the drop on him and kill him with liquid nitrogen. Frank goes back just in time to stop the neutron project test.
